Good point. But I think you have an idea of where you are with the player right? The Flames werent winning the cup that year...i mean crazier things have happened. But now the Flames are straddled with three aging veterans with long tern contracts as result of that.

Imagine the Leafs didnt sign Matthews to an extension this year and he walks on the premise that hey we need him for the playoffs?
Players lie. Islanders probably thought Tavares was coming back but he had a NMC and wouldn't waive it and then signed here. Gaudreau also had a NMC. I don't know if he wouldn't waive it or not because I didn't really follow that entire situation but players will lie and say they want to stay and then leave so fast.

From the sounds of it Treveling isn't afraid to say it how it is so I'd assume he'll have a talk with the core and get to the bottom of what they plan to do and if they leave him with the impression they're gonna leave he'll trade them. He wasn't my 1st or 2nd option but looking into more stuff it doesn't seem like he's as bad as some make him out to be and it appears the main reason for the mutual departure was he was unhappy with having to keep Sutter around as coach. I think we can all agree that Calgary was probably a playoff team with a coach that fit that team, especially after he made that trade for Weegar and Huberdeau.

Laughable that everyone is freaking out. My god Dubasites are the absolute worst. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Tre will do a good job here. I believe he’ll inject a new and way better philosophy than that absolute donkey Dubis ever could. Dubis was an absolute amateur in every single way and it showed through the consistent insane belief that cups are won with a heavy concentration of speed, soft skill finesse players, when really all of us can see that a blend of everything is the most ideal to winning the cup. Prepare for our team to get a lot meaner on the ice. And that is a good thing. The Dubasites’ tears taste so good. Welcome to Toronto, Tre!

He is a better choice than Dubas. He should do better than Dubas. If core players get traded, don't blame him, it's because Dubas' overpays etc. I don't expect a lot from him, certainly not my first choice but he can always prove us wrong.

some people often and on purpose make false assertions like "Grit" means "goons"

Crosby/Mack/Ovi and heck McDavid/Drai/Stone/Tkachuk have "grit" are they goons?

we needed a "culture" shift; and we may be about to get one

:yo:

I think of the Calgary Flames before their meltdown to Edmonton last year as a St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg Jets style of Western Conference contender that can be up and down every year but has that similar solid back end, big body, straight line speed. If he can come in and build up a credible blueline and some hard to play against bottom 6 group I think that will complement the Big 4.

We just need the GM equivalent of a guy who can make a solid play under pressure instead of dangling at the blueline to prove how talented they are. Just do good work.

Also, at least he got Tkachuk and Gaudreau played at 7MX3 and 6MX6 instead of 11MX5/6 after ELC.

I still recall a time when commentators were saying how great the contractual situation of Calgary was (Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Monahan) in comparison to the Oilers.

I will be satisfied as long as he can sign Matthews to a reasonable-enough deal, and won't waste 5 mill on some middle-of-the-road UFA (most risky scenario).

As long as he can stay away from James Neal/Lucic situation; (which I think he will) we should be good in terms of "quality depth"

but like you pointed out the main thing is getting the contracts done at a reasonable cap hit which dubas absolutely botched.

Also Flames didn't play that bad this season IMO; Markstrom forgot how to play goal and so their season ended. It should be noted that Flames finished higher than freakin' panthers in terms of points and still missed the playoffs

Would've been cool to flex some financial might and get reputable GM/President combo like Armstrong or McPhee but this seems to be the best alternative of the available GM options out there with the caveat of experience.

I'm optimistic but will be as scrupulous as always with the next GM in the moves and overall culture instilled into the team.

I think Treliving could be the right mix of new and old school that this market needs.

Didnt know he had a NMC. Good know. You are right sometimes the teams hands are tied and they play the cards they are dealt with.

We've seen Cup winning GMs brought in that haven't been able to recreate the magic. Faults and all, this team was still a second round exit. I'll believe in and support this hire unless I have reason to think otherwise. Let it play out and see how that goes.

I think in a way this is a brilliant move. Bring in a guy who got burned by some kids not wanting to sign and forcing his hand. One would have to assume he is going to be super sensitive to the matthews, marner, nylander situation since he just did this dance. Im happy he gets a do over so to speak and learn from his mistakes. I think he will be a lot more assertive and proactive with the fellas. Dubas would have waited and ultimately would have got burned by them leaving or forced to sign even worse contracts. With BT i think we have a chance that they sign better contracts or they get traded before they get the opportunity to walk for nothing.

At the end of the day, no one can make the kids sign for a fair price so our leverage is to offer market value or trade them. I suspect matthews and nylander would not care but marner would probably be upset to end up on a new team.
