Lou stopped being a 'good' GM his last few years with the Devils... after that, its reputation that keep him in employed as he signs bad contract after bad contract.
luckily for the Leafs, he's signing bad deals for the Isles now, and not Toronto.

Lou is clearly not what he once was and I’m not a fan of a lot of his work on the Island, though those teams have also had more playoff success than Toronto.

I think he deserves some respect as a Hall of Fame builder though, what he did in his short time in Toronto as well.

My optimistic look says he's never started with the talent we have here, so can he supplement the group with the right parts?
I like the way he evaluates defensemen. Weegar is a defensive stud and underrated in the Tkachuk deal.
Lets see how he patches the holes. I'm not big on him but I'm also not going to crucify him until he's shown his work here.
Good luck Brad and hopefully season ticket holders now get a discount at Boston Pizza.

I completely forgot that one of Treliving's last moves as GM of Calgary was trading for Nick Ritchie lol.

I laughed at that trade. It was a trade for the sake of making a trade
Can't say I am too happy with this signing

well, it's apparently a done deal for BT being GM, so why not let him have both positions, and Shanahan falling on his sword gets rid of everyone who created this mess in the first place........
That would be ideal...

Lou made some really bad moves (Marleau, Zaitsev contracts) but I agree it would be a mistake to underestimate his impact on the culture of this organization.

This team was an absolute disaster on every level prior to his arrival and, while he was not alone in helping build it back up (Leiweke deserves big credit too), he was certainly part of it.

He's also done something similar with the Isles, a franchise once comically run as Garth Snow's personal fiefdom, even though -- again -- the actual GM part of the job has been lacklustre.

(i.e., he's probably a better President than GM at this stage of his career).

Honestly not the worst-case scenario; I've come to terms with him being the likely choice over the past week or so, and obviously I hope he kicks ass here.

That said, it really speaks to how much of a dumpster fire the whole situation was. Firing Dubas was a rash decision based off emotion, and it seems pretty apparent the org didn't have a fallback plan in place - so they rushed to hire the first notable name with experience who was on the market.

Treliving's made some really solid, creative moves, so there's definitely a possibility for success here. But honestly, if things go sideways, it's less of an indictment on him and moreso on upper management. We're in a position we never should've been in, and that's squarely on Shanahan and the board. It's a roll of the dice... let's pray to god it works out.

Had Leafs dumped Shannahan when Dubas became GM and made Lou president where would they be I wonder- thing is Dubas was probably not Lou's choice- it would have been Hunter
