People say oh yeah Dubas got 20 year old stars, well he also was handcuffed with having to sign them without the ability to do so early.

Better check your facts there as you're misremembering. :wg: Dubas was given the GM job May 11th 2018

Only Nylander was in the 3rd year of his deal and needed a new contract.

Matthews & Marner had just completed years 1 & 2 of ELC and going into year 3.. They were not eligible to re-sign until July 1st 2018 when the final year of their ELC would kick in.

It was all Dubas that decided not to re-sign them a year early while still on their ELC and let them both reach RFA status and then got played by the threat of "Offer-sheets" to over pay them by craft player agents.

FInally some sense. Agreed completely. And your point about Marner signing 8x8, that was Lou who rejected that deal as well. People say oh yeah Dubas got 20 year old stars, well he also was handcuffed with having to sign them without the ability to do so early, and also had to deal with Zaitsev contracts, a bottom 5 defense, and all of these other issues like Marleau he inherited.

Not to mention the players hated Babcock and wouldn't take a discount to play for him.

Leave out the regular season success which DOES matter. We were a damn good team under Dubas for 5 years and that matters.
Common knowledge by now Dubas was okay with the Marleau signing. Contrary to what this board believes, Lou and Dubas worked as a team. They didn't come into the office competing with each other.

Of course.. my biggest interests are

- any specific players he wants to bring from calgary
- his moves regarding our current prospects
Little more immediate for me.

Changing coach?

9 UFA's from end of season roster, that's plenty of roster room to draw some initial conclusions on how/if he is looking to change the makeup of the team.

Murray.

And of course, the contracts extensions.

By September we should have an idea of what's up.

The Marner contract shouldve been avoided by agreeing to a deal the year before (8x8 was rumoured to be offered by Marner at the time)... He hadnt fully proved himself yet, but everybody knew the following year would very likely increase his demands. Like it or not, Matthews will likely set a new market high each time he signs a new contract (same as McDavid, Mackinnon, and other top 5 players).

There's very little hard reporting on the number (most articles say things like "it's believed") but it was 8x$9m. That's just as unreasonable of a contract the year before.

Hindsight is 20:20. You're effectively suggesting he should have signed a bad contract a year earlier because we're from the future so we know he would have gotten lucky.

Toronto Maple Leafs Next GM with Elliotte Friedman | JD Bunkis Podcast

SPORTSNET

May 31, 2023

Elliotte Friedman joins JD Bunkis to discuss Brad Treliving, the Toronto Maple Leafs' GM search and what it means for the rest of the organization.

I'm excited about wheeling and dealing.

Depending who signs and is sent back from trades of the core, we could end up with an older JT aged team short term that is pretty competitive.

I think the Dallas stars did that one year and went deep with a platoon like that. If AM MM and WN dont want to play ball we may as well trade and see what happens. Woll looks pretty good so.

You really need to re-educate yourself on the 2005-2014 years to understand what a shit show it.

Dubas failed but it was far from a shit show.

Also worth noting that the 2005-2014 seasons aren’t necessarily a baseline to where the team will backslide to and the 2005-2008 years were very different to the 2009-2012 years and 2012-2014 were different as well.

What I’m getting at is Dubas wasn’t single-handedly taking us out of the dark ages and we won’t be plunging back into the dark ages because he’s gone.

Leave out the regular season success which DOES matter. We were a damn good team under Dubas for 5 years and that matters.
It's ok, but it's not like they ever even won the presidents trophy or anything. If you like moderate regular season success so much, just wait until you get a taste of playoff success. I guarantee Florida fans prefer this year to last year

So they heard Johnston say it and repeated it as gospel? Classic definition of hearsay.

Koshan doesn't reference CJ in his article.

Either a series of different journalists are completely dedicated to making this up for no apparent motivation - OR it actually happened.

The simplest answer here seems by far the most logical....

Shanny or Treliving aren't going to weaken their trade position by declaring that he core 4 are being moved no matter what.

There's almost nothing I take as gospel about a teams management statements. Of course Shanny will tell them he likes them. He'll probably tell them that after their traded too.

Shanahan has totally lost the plot. He is making everybody comfortable, why should they try to get better if they are all almost guaranteed to be back if they want to? There is no accountability. Shanny has turned this back into a country club atmosphere.
Shanahan is going by the Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman schedule to win a cup. It took Stevie Y 14 seasons in Detroit to finally hoist Lord Stanley. Yzerman was doing the same thing in Tampa by keeping all their best players and rearranging the depth pieces and low and behold Stamkos after 13 years with Tampa wins a cup.

Patience folks.

And your point about Marner signing 8x8, that was Lou who rejected that deal as well.

When did Lou reject an extension for Mitch Marner? Unless I'm mistaken, Lou was never even able to extend Mitch Marner. He left the team in April of 2018. Marner signed his new contact in September of 2019.

I'd agree there would be no use in saying some of the core will be moved but I don't see how it weakens their position.

I think Shanahan is an issue here - lack of plan, desire to keep the core four going, keep Keefe etc. Him being happy with the charade here is the biggest red flag. When do you ever see GMs being interviewed and told that the coach should stay? It's funny how this fan base will circle all in on Tre when above him is the problem.

The way this Dubas experiment blew up in his face should've been the end. We need a full management reset here not just Tre being brought on as the future scapegoat. I hope Tre isn't meddled with and has full autonomy to make decisions necessary to properly judge his performance.
