I'd rather have DUbas

I don't even grasp how you come up with this. The weasel essentially sabotaged himself here so he wouldn't have to deal with the bad contracts he made prior. No idea how people don't get that he practically abandoned ship knowing he would have to make massive overpayments to keep it going.

Dubas was emptying the prospect and draft pool to keep his shell game going. Get over it.

I would never expect players to take discounts. Very few do, if they do, that's great but counting on is it dumb and publicly announcing that this is the type of players you need (as if there's a realistic expectation of it happening) seems naive and made him look foolish in the end.

If you were to evaluate the 3 home grown guys contracts, how would you classify them?

Matthews - AAV is fine but it needed an 8 year term, at 5 years, it's a bad contract

Marner - Bad contract, I think they made him the highest paid winger in the league as an RFA until Panarin signed as a UFA.

Nylander - It got flack at the time and he didn't help things out with the terrible start but it probably looks to be the best value of all 3.

Pretty sure he'll give the classic PR GM talk of liking the coach but they will take time to assess the position. I'd be shocked if it was done in the next 24 hours.

Yea that's safe.

Just like Dubas I was willing to give him a chance. I will do the same with Treliving. I’ll see what he does in his first year before writing him off.

He brought his own guy who is obviously a family friend and will essentially bypass Shanahan.
Sorry, what is this angle?

Brad Treiliving is family friends with Larry T or someone on the board? Are you suggesting this was a hire made by the board and not Shanny?

Not trying to be confrontational, I am genuinely curious. I am losing faith in Shanny, so this sounds like welcomed news if true

He has an easy first move ... get a new coach.

If he doesn't change the coach either he can't or he's just looking for a handy excuse if things don't go well.

This is an easy pass-fail test.
Do you think he will start with a new coach? He has no preconceived notion about Keefe.
Would he be looking at the playoff results first or the fact that his coach has a 100 point team? Keefe is already under contract and there are more pressing matters.
If you were a new GM would you want to start with the feeling that you will make the playoffs and go from there?

People need to stop with the Tkachuk trade. None of this would even matter if Pit didn't poop on the bed during the last 3 games of the season. FLA would have missed the playoffs and none of this Tkachuk narrative would have been around. CGY would have won the trade as they got 2 for 1 in the deal.

People forget the Flames actually had more points this year than the Panthers.

Imagine Marner went to Dubas and said I want out and Dubas got Kyle Connor and Josh Morrisey back. that would be a great return on a guy who doesn't want to be here. Tree was in the same spot he had a player not wanting to play there and brought in 2 quality players.

Go back and look at his trades history and he has won way more than lost. His RFA signings have been good. Rasums Anderson at 4.6 is great back at the age of 22. Some of his UFA signing are suspect but July 1st signings are always tricky.

There are worse candidates but Calgary teams are always competitive and they didn't really have any superstars just hardworking team.
Exactly, What he did with Tkachuk is great for a guy who didnt had a lot of option. Got a highed skilled player who had a better production of gaudreau previous 4 season, a top pairing D and a 1st pick.

He had to deal with a coach he didn't liked because flames forced him to work with Sutter... and its probably whats cost flames a playoff spot.

Overal he did a great job in calgary

It was posted if not confirmed Larry T and Treliving family are friends. I believe it was also posted to twitter that this would enable him to go directly to the board. There is also another twitter post going around that essentially said Treliving as the choice was the likely workaround for Shanahan.

I am not the smartest guy in the world but that sounds pretty plausible.

Friedman thinks there's a good chance Keefe stays.

I guess Treliving wants to play that card later
Ya, I mean it is a bitch ass move from Tree's position, but I also totally get it. Why waste that one bullet already.

If things start slow, he can always blame it on Keefe and gas him later. Whereas a new coach now combined with a slow start comes down solely on Tree.

I just don't like the idea of a GM not having a cohesive relationship with their coach. Clearly Sheldon knows he is not Tree's guy. Just seems inevitable that he gets let go at some point. Why waste time. I'd much rather we don't go through another Dubas/Babcock situation. That was so painful

I think this is the one thing that has me more intrigued with Brad as GM. I really don't think a lot of the downfall in Calgary can be solely attributed to Brad. I genuinely don't think it's a premier destination or organization in the league. Guys like Johnny Hockey and Tkachuk wanted out for a reason, and I don't believe that was Brad.

I have read the owner in Calgary is a piece of work, and I imagine this had something to do with his inability to assemble or maintain a roster he wanted.

Of course, Brad has to share wear some of the blame. But I am genuinely interested to see how he fairs with a virtually limitless budget, and no longer having to convince players that the juice is worth the squeeze in a city like Calgary. No offence to Calgary, I love it personally, it's just not as desirable as Toronto for most NHL players.

The one area I want to see improvement in from Brad's perspective is drafting. He's had some clear and obvious W's in that regard, but also some duds. Hopefully he just trusts his staff and doesn't pull rank on something he really has no expertise in.

Americans Gaudreau and Tkachuk wanted to leave Calgary. That shouldn't surprise anyone.

I wouldn't live in Toronto for 50% more money, but neither would I live in NY for 10 times the money. But realistically, they are working in those cities, but probably live elsewhere in the off-season.

If Flames had a goaltender for half the season they'd have easily made the playoffs but Edmonton broke him in the playoffs. If you're happy for/with Treliving send a thank you note to McDavid and Draisaitl.

The arena situation in Calgary is the biggest difference. Spending to the Cap isn't an advantage.

Clean slate, he'll have a few years before anything comes down on him.

That's not how hockey works. It's poor business practice as well to keep people from seeking new employment when there is the most opportunity available.

The organization has professional scouts for these things too.
Professional scouts scout other teams and they know nothing about the personalities and tendencies in the room.

Even so, if you were walking into a new situation with a bunch of unknowns, wouldn’t you leave the known alone?
For example, with this core and Keefe, how do you expect the regular season to go?

from the Hotstove re: Keefe

They were coached to play so slowly. Constant regroups. Very little attacking off the rush. Very little attacking from the defense; Timothy Liljegren led their defense with six goals (there were 68 defensemen in the league that scored at least seven goals last season). The forwards were well structured defensively and checked very well, which is a good thing overall, but Auston Matthews led all forwards in the league in blocked shots and scored 40 goals in 74 games (which is good for most players, but truthfully, not for him; he tied the second lowest goals per game rate of his career). The team finished 16th in the regular season in 5v5 corsi. In the right situation, it’s fair to wonder how this group looks under a different system.

The last 5 years are the only reprieve from the clown show that we've had in decades.

My expectations are high. That's why I'm not thrilled with the patchwork mess this offseason has been so far.

I don't know Dekes, when I played I usually played to win the Championship. I didn't really care about regular season though it was a pretty good feeling if we were leading the division.

Your expectations couldn't have been too high considering Dubas' teams failures year after year even against lesser teams like CBJ and MTL. If your expectations are the hunt for the presidents trophy or something, I get it.
