I have been a huge fan of Kyle Dubas over the past 5 seasons, so to say I was upset 2 weeks ago was a bit of an understatement. I do feel like we've downgraded at the GM position. All over a power struggle between Shanny and Dubby no less. Who is to blame for that is really anyone's guess. We've only heard Shanny's side of the story. All I can say is that Shanny, the board of directors, and Dubas himself wanted him to return as GM, and yet here we are today with Brad Treiliving expected to man the ship.

that said, I cheer for the Leafs, not Kyle Dubas. I may not agree with the sequence of events that have transpired over the last 2 weeks, but I can accept it and move forward.

Brad seems like the vanilla ice cream selection to me. There's really not a lot to be thrilled or complain about him as a GM. Similar to Kyle, he has made mistakes in his first run as GM, but he's also made some quality moves as well. Without knowing him personally, it really does feel like he is a student of the game. I feel like he doesn't look at failures as anything other than learning experience. In chatting with some Calgary fans a week ago, it seems as though he is not shy to admit previous wrongs. Which is so important.

He also seemingly has a ton of respect leaguewide which will help navigate these tough couple weeks ahead with a bit more ease.

I am going to give Brad every chance here. It's a fantastic opportunity for him to walk into. Kyle has left him a very good roster to work with as well as no real boat anchor contracts. He won't need to strip the car down to parts unless he deems fit. I am really interested to hear from him during his opening press conference. I'd love to see what he thinks of this roster, and what he envisions needing to get done in the near and distant future.

Welcome to the buds Brad!

Dubas will find out like treliving what it is like to work for a tight fisted owner.
Teiliving will now have MLSE budget to find what we need.

As far as his team in Calgary, I was shocked that they had such a bad season last yr.
There defence alone was great the yr before then you add Weeger .
Calgary adds the right coach they will be back

Treliving draft from 2014 - 2017
Bennett
R Anderson
Kylington
Mangiapane
Tkachuk
Dude
Fox
Valuation
Ruzucka

Tkachuk trade
Hidenbreau weeger Schmidt 2025 1st rd pk

I think the calgary owner wanted Hidenbreau signed

Lindholm + Hanifan
For
Hamilton Ferland Fox ( didnt want to sign with calgary )

dougie Hamilton for a 1st 2nd 3rd

I will take this person

I am sorry man. I just completely disagree. I am sure there are plenty of people that would love to have the roster/cap construction that we presently have.

The roster Brad just left, to the one he is inheriting is truly night and day. It's really not even remotely close

If nothing else, Shanahan can’t be accused of overthinking this one. There was an experienced guy available, and that was that.

By itself, the switch from Dubas to Treliving is not the big swing that many imagined. Dubas infamously won just the one playoff round in five seasons in charge in Toronto, Treliving won two series in nine years in Calgary. Flames ownership wanted Treliving back for a 10th season (and presumably beyond), but he walked away when his contract expired.

That the organization wanted him to continue suggests a baseline competency at his job, but the accomplishments of the Flames under his watch do not exactly leap off the page. They had 107 points and won the Pacific division in 2018-19, then lost in the first round of the playoffs, otherwise known as a Leafs.

Last season they looked like a true powerhouse, with 111 points and another division title, but lost in the second round to Edmonton. Then Johnny Gaudreau left as a free agent and Treliving traded Matthew Tkachuk when he said he wouldn’t re-sign long-term in Calgary. The Flames missed the playoffs and Tkachuk is a Conn Smythe candidate, scoring key goals and dangling his mouthguard for the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.

Treliving, then, has been good but not great, is familiar with the pressures of working in a Canadian market, and is not unfamiliar with making big trades. That seems to have been enough for Shanahan, although the key attribute for the presumed new hire is that he is not Kyle Dubas. This isn’t the flashy hire of Lou Lamoriello or Mike Babcock, like Shanahan’s earliest moves. It’s a guy who, like him, remains unproven after nine years on the job.

What happens next will go a lot further to determine how different the Maple Leafs of next season look compared with this season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe is presumed to be on his way out, although a new GM often prefers to keep the existing guy behind the bench so he can be replaced at the first sign of crisis.

The decisions with the roster will be even more complicated. If Shanahan wants his man to blow it up, even a little, that would mean moving on from one (or more) of four star forwards. But Treliving did that a year ago, and look how that turned out.

If Treliving is indeed announced as the next Toronto GM, there won’t be any time for a honeymoon. He’ll have to get straight to work on the messy divorce.

Whoa, those are the same players who left the Leafs as Free Agents. Except Clifford who has another year on his contract.

One thing about trades, I do recall immense praise for Treliving last off season on how well he did, given the horrible cards he was dealt. As we sit here today, it looks different, but at the time, the hockey world was very impressed with his moves. And I do wonder what would have happened in Calgary last year had ownership let him can Sutter like he wanted to, the team had obvious internal issues.

Yeah, Sutter was totally the wrong coach for guys like Huberdeau. Going to be interesting to see how he (and the whole team) rebound. He'll probably jump back up to 80 points and then people will have a revisionist history view of that trade. But I guess if the Panthers win it's always going to be notorious.

He'd be the complete wrong guy for this team, but he'd be funny in the media lol

He has an easy first move ... get a new coach.

If he doesn't change the coach either he can't or he's just looking for a handy excuse if things don't go well.

This is an easy pass-fail test.

I think this is the one thing that has me more intrigued with Brad as GM. I really don't think a lot of the downfall in Calgary can be solely attributed to Brad. I genuinely don't think it's a premier destination or organization in the league. Guys like Johnny Hockey and Tkachuk wanted out for a reason, and I don't believe that was Brad.

I have read the owner in Calgary is a piece of work, and I imagine this had something to do with his inability to assemble or maintain a roster he wanted.

Of course, Brad has to share wear some of the blame. But I am genuinely interested to see how he fairs with a virtually limitless budget, and no longer having to convince players that the juice is worth the squeeze in a city like Calgary. No offence to Calgary, I love it personally, it's just not as desirable as Toronto for most NHL players.

The one area I want to see improvement in from Brad's perspective is drafting. He's had some clear and obvious W's in that regard, but also some duds. Hopefully he just trusts his staff and doesn't pull rank on something he really has no expertise in.

The whole country is poorly governed, just as everyone in every province and you'll find most people don't like who is in office representing them but that's an entirely different topic lol.

Calgary snow fall / winters are worse but grid lock in Toronto definitely sucks.

Most of Dubas's 2+ year contracts we've acquired or signed, we've had to look for ways out...Nick Ritchie...Mrazek and now Murray.

What’s so special about how the US is governed or has been governed? They have an 80 year old senile president, and before they had Donald Trump lol.

Anyway, every big city in North America is the same. What is so special about Boston? Or NYC? Or Chicago? Noisy, unfriendly, gridlocked, cold in winter. I still say that I enjoy living in Toronto overall.

Should we expect the announcement of Keefe's departure at the same time as they announce the GM hiring?

Honest to goodness I think Dubas was happy to leave because he's painted himself into a corner with the franchise situation. And without the power to protect himself from performance reviews that have consequences he could see his time was running out as the precocious hockey management guy. He's now just another middle aged guy with the credentials to be employed by some NHL front office.
