GTA or the UK
13 months ago, Shanahan wasn't ready to extend his GM.

Remarkably, he's still been caught with his pants down regarding his GM position. What was he doing the last year?

It took him 9 days to get Treliving. This wasn't an exhaustive, comprehensive, and complete GM search leading to the Leafs landing the best candidate available - this was a snatch & grab panic move after being caught offguard.

An organization, and president, making it up as they go

Probably in part brought in to be the fall guy for when the big trades happen. Treliving will not be blindsided again, they said that. This means the core agrees to terms or are shown the door. Pretty simple and honestly the right thing to do,.
Yup. Let's get to work. The next month might be he most pivotal in Leafs' history.

What a lucky break, the first name they were publicly linked to also magically happened to be the perfect candidate
Here’s a conspiracy theory, maybe they wanted him and have been talking since he left Calgary, maybe they’re ahead of the curve and have a plan in place on what to do with 34, 16, 88? And yeah it’d be tampering, but tell me the Pen’s and Dubas haven’t been unethical in his supposed hire……….

Everyone wanted their pound of flesh with Dubas gone. And now bitching about the choice of replacement [eye roll].
Apples and oranges imo……..

Maybe. I work in a line of business where I'm being lied to constantly. You might be right thay I'm seeing conspiracies.

I've just always felt it good to question people's motives.

Unfortunately for this team it always seems to come back to money.

A "let's keep Kyle and Shanny employed" scheme isn't really all that conspiracy theory now is it?

Do you ever get sick of apologizing for this team?

It's the fans that have allowed this franchise to become what it is today.

You can blame Dubas' and Shanahan for dividing the fan base too.

A divide and conquer strategy is right in line with the way this team operates.
What does any of that have to do with you mislabeling your opinion as fact?
None of what you posted was 'fact'.
Jumping to immediate personal attacks is not a good sign.
Do better.

Not a surprise. Not exciting either.

The only caveat I'll put into his poor Calgary performance is that there appeared to be significant ownership interference.

I have two major complaints about him - his draft record is abysmal (nailing a top 10 pick doesn't count as a plus IMO (it's simply expected competence), and the Bill Peters situations. Going out of your way for that guy just made no sense whatsoever.

Well hey at least the chain of command being too long isn’t an issue anymore.

Dubas -> Shanny -> Board -> Shanny -> Dubas

Can now be Tre Jim and Larry having a beer over caviar.
First of all, beer and caviar together won't happen. Wine all the way. Second, and most important, I'm not sure the three of them meeting like this would be a bad thing.

Treliving has experience in Canada, a bunch of experience dealing with company boards due to who his dad is and had to trade his best player last year so knows the market.

He was also pretty good at building the defense and drafted one of the better goalie prospects in the league right now

He also got a third for big save save from us in what must be the biggest robbery of all time

The negative is obviously they had some stinker seasons, he needs to hire better coaches then he did and they didn't have playoff success there either

All in all he's a solid hire we'll see what he does hopefully he doesn't have a North Korea style cult of personality and I don't have to watch him play up a pouty face to the camera every time it pans to him

Most of what I posted was fact actually.

There was no personal attack. I said "fans", not "you".

Okay here we go...

Not my first choice but you could do worse

Off the top of my head...

NHL defenseman drafted

Drafted: Andersson, Kylington, Valimaki and Fox
Dubas drafted: Sandin, Durzi and maybe Dermott

(notable) NHL defenseman acquired via trade: Hamilton, Hanifin, Weegar, Zadorov and Hamonic
(notable) NHL defenseman Dubas acquired via trade: McCabe, Muzzin and Schenn

Dubas felt he had to trade Kadri because he got suspended twice in the playoffs and got Kerfoot and Barrie

Treliving was told by Tkachuk that he wouldn't be a Flame going forward and managed to acquire a 115 pt winger in Huberdeau and extended him, he had a rough season in Calgary but seemed to butt heads with Sutter, who's no longer there) He also got a top pair or at worst, top 4 D in Weegar.

He also had to sell players on Alberta...Toronto is an easier sell.

My bet is that Treliving will be announced Thursday but to also watch for Shane Doan to be brought in some capacity (Auston's childhood hero).
I’m betting on Friday, eSes the blow for the Dubites, see Shanahan actually does have a heart……..

One thing we know, Shanahan is involved with hockey decisions. If you’re praising Dubas’ moves last year, then Shanny fits into that metric. Treliving is used to answering to people above him, he didn’t have autonomy in Calgary , so he might be a good fit in that regard here, at least now it’s a hockey guy rather than a suit. Throw in a Pridham, gI’ve this guy resources he only dreamed of in Calgary, we should be fine.

I will say this, Dubas has left a bit of a mess here, the prospect cupboard is drying up, we only have 3 picks this year and big big cap issues. Treliving comes into a much tougher situation than Dubas walked into, that’s for sure.

I’m wishing Treliving well, and never forget Dubas did this too himself, his own entitled arrogance brought us here.

Nice to have a hockey guy in charge again, bean counters have their place at a GM’s side imo, I give him a pass until he proves he can’t do the job. Best part is if he fails I’m blaming it on Dubas, in fact everything going forward that’s bad is Dubas’ fault. He’s getting the Lou treatment going forward………

Just a tiny counterpoint: to be fair Calgary is pretty much just a smaller colder Toronto. If you aren't enjoying Calgary as a city, you probably aren't thinking Toronto is a huge upgrade. Not meant to be a slag against Calgary, I suspect that I'd enjoy Calgary more than the GTA these days. Toronto is getting so gridlocked, so crowded, so unfriendly, so noisy, so poorly governed.

Treliving was the best option of what was available imo. I could see it being a very easy and quick decision.

You didn't mention his signings. His signing history is pretty horrid. A lot of them have been buyout candidates or ones he's had to swap for another bad contract. Kind of important considering, we've got some big contracts coming up for our team and having to fill out the rest of the roster.

His drafting has been either really good some years and really bad in others.

His trade history is pretty good

Yep 3 picks that will help….let’s compare to Nashville. They pick twice before we pick, then they pick 10 times before we pick again. Thanks Dubas.

The whole country is poorly governed, just as everyone in every province and you'll find most people don't like who is in office representing them but that's an entirely different topic lol.

Calgary snow fall / winters are worse but grid lock in Toronto definitely sucks.

Most of Dubas's 2+ year contracts we've acquired or signed, we've had to look for ways out...Nick Ritchie...Mrazek and now Murray.
