No, he didn’t. But he inherited some good pieces and had a slim dunk pick with Matthew tkachuk. Giordano and Brodie were both norris caliber dmen that were the backbone of our defence until 2020.

Keep in mind I wasn’t a fan of his during his tenure. There are other flames fans who look at him more positively, but I personally don’t understand the hype he gets.
Gio and Brodie had their best season after he got there. He inherited a 30 year old Gio, Brodie, Monahan and Gaudreau. Conroy just inherited Lindholm, Hanifan, Andersson, Weegar, Huberdeau, Kadri, Coleman and that's all I can remember off the top and he has some pretty good prospects ready to make the jump and 1 of them being a goalie. Can say the contracts for Huberdeau and Kadri aren't great but under a new coach they'll probably produce the way they did under more offence minded coaches on previous teams if Conroy doesn't screw that up.

Funny how you don't extend this grace to Dubas.

I’m not condemning Dubas to a career of mediocrity. I think he was learning on the job for much of it and that was the problem. He also had a massive staff and top class resources at his disposal and didn’t build a team that could win in the playoffs. That said, I think he’ll continue to improve.

We’ll see what Treliving does with all of the resources and talent that Toronto possesses.

I’m guessing people don’t understand the difference between the 2 markets. No players want to play in Calgary, so you have to overpay to keep them. We just had a terrible GM who overpays everyone so they can be friends with him
This is fair comment, and why I’m tempering my concern over the length of these contracts he’s signed. Calgary is one of the top teams not included on limited no trade clauses, it is not an attractive destination.

How does this stuff leaked?

Is Dregs to be trusted here? I thought he was out of the loop.
He was out of the Dubas loop.

Another thing to add here: Most hockey outlets have the Leafs prospect pool ranked above the Flames'

Think about where we've drafted under Dubas vs Calgary under Treliving. That ain't great sign either.

That being said I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt but the people here celebrating this as a definite upgrade are very knowledgeable NBA fans...

Who was responsible for keeping the coach, which ultimately forced Gaudreau and Tkachuk to leave?

People wanna make it look like his hands were tied...oh yes, by himself. He made those decisions. He hired Sutter, he kept Sutter, who forced Gaudreau and Tkachuk to leave.

It's all on Treliving no matter how you guys want to twist it. Than he goes and signs a 30 year old Huberdeau for 8 years and much more money than Tkachuk, and sigs an aging Kadri to a terrible contract while still keeping Sutter who is slowly destroying the team stability.

What a shitshow this will be here

I will give PizzaMan the same benefit of the doubt I gave Dubas. Look at it this way, if he wins 2 rounds in the next 5 years he'll have surpassed Dubas' impeccable legacy. 😂

I live in Calgary. I understand the market. Tre lowballed Johnny the summer before, and he rejected the offer. He didn't negotiate during the year, and left during free agency.

So, if we blame the GM in Toronto for overpaying players, do we blame Tre for losing players and overpaying a 29 year old Huberdeau until he is 37? Or does he just get a mulligan on that because it is Calgary?

Flames fan here, I posted this on the main board so I’ll post it here too:

Brad isn’t the best GM but he also isn’t the worse. He works hard and always has his ear on what’s happening around the league. He is well spoken and is respected around the league by players and other front offices.

His biggest weakness by far has been his FA signings and coach hires. But I feel like the coaching hires mostly has to do with Flames ownership being cheap for a long time about coaching until Sutter.

Also, considering that Chiarelli and Bergevin were two of the names that were rumored to be GM, the Leafs could’ve done far, far worse. I wish him luck in Toronto

Markstrom this time last year was a Vezina finalist was he not? I know he stunk bad this past year but he was by all accounts a very good goaltender with the outliner being this past year.

Blake Coleman was always a hard working gritty complimentary mid-line player. Some people want more of those players around here. Not sure he's really an issue or that much of a terrible contract, but the term is ugly for a player of his ilk for sure. Something Dubas avoided and hopefully Treliving avoids.

He also got Tanev which was a big time home run for them. Trading for Zadorov for just a mid round pick was also damn good.

Neal and Brouwer contracts were awful for sure.
Markstrom having one good year (basically all his other years were around average) doesn't equal a 6x6 full nmc contract. He's more likely to stay around average/slightly above average based on his career so far vs. Going back to vezina calibre. He had a solid 43 games like 2 years before signing the contract. Basically he's been up and down every year, never know what you're going to get. Not someone you give that contract too especially a goalie.

That was a signing.

Not a trade.
TJ Brodie was a free agent signing.

I guess I missed the part that a home run is only by trading for someone? But ok.

Muzzin and McCabe additions were what I'd consider home runs. Multiple years of primed players and playing well seems good. McCabe on a 2M contract for 2 more seasons is very nice moving forward.

His trading history is pretty meh.
