Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

How distraught must the Dubas Fan Boi Club be feeling now?

The Leafs are rolling and the Penguins have regressed to being bottom feeders. To make matters even worse, their hero gave away a big chunk of the future to bring in a washed up has been with a boat anchor contract.

If Pittsburgh manages to win the lottery and conveys the #1 overall pick to San Jose, we’re going to need a new sub forum here called The Calming Corner.

Any improvement from this point forward is simply because Treliving was so inept at the start of his tenure it was unsustainable.

Then again I said the same thing about Dubas.

If only poor Brad had $8.5M to address defense and goaltending. It's like it all got sucked up into a couple bad contracts or something. Shanahan should be pissed.

Wondering why his SC contending team is masquerading with the likes of Bertuzzi and Domi on the roster.

Next time Treliving's on the phone with another GM looking into all the hot trade rumours he should ask how to do the job better. Any advice is good advice at this point. Not much could make this guy worse at what he does.

Anyone who's gets a pass because he only signed Tyler Bertuzzi to a $5.5M contract for one year is someone for who the bar is set SO low it's impossible not to improve.

Concidering it is a made up club, you can decide how distraught the imaginary members must be.

Ryan Graves and Reilly Smith are awful signings. Karlsson wasn't a great trade either. It's like Kyle learnt nothing from 5 years here.

Karlsson has been very good in his own end surprisingly.. in fact Pit as a whole has been. They can't score.

Tough years ahead for them
I am sure that Penguins fans are ultimately fine with the idea of the team having to rebuild at some point soon.

I agree.

All assumption, but my guess would be Dubas talked to Crosby, etc and collectively decided tp go for it one more time.

I get it from Crosby's viewpoint. Not really from Dubas'. Except I guess he didn't want to go in and tear it down right away.

Let’s compare:

Treliving is paying Bertuzzi $5.5M per for one year and he has 22 points in 53 games.

Kyle Dumbass is paying Reilly Smith $5M per for TWO (2) years and he has 22 points in 46 games. And Dumbass gave away a 3rd round pick for the privilege of taking on that brutal contract.

Kyle Dumbass is also paying Ryan Graves $4.5M per for SIX (6) years and he has a laughable 9 points in 52 games.

Treliving is an infinitely better GM than Kyle Dumbass.

With his 5.5 million who would you use to sign at that time?

If you’re going for it “one more time” it defies logic to give a no-talent hack like Ryan Graves a SIX (6) year deal at $4.5M per.

Unless you somehow figure Graves is a foundational block for the impending rebuild.

I think their pick has some protection on it, I don't think that can happen.

I think it all makes good sense. He has a 7 year contract. No doubt during those negotiations everyone at the table was clear that within that 7 year period Crosby, Malkin et al would be gone and the team would need to be rebuilt. So they decided to give it a couple more years to see if they could maximize the time those guys have left, and all they really gave up was a first round pick. It may turn out to be a disaster if Pittsburgh sinks to bottom 5 in the league, and I'm sure they never thought that would happen, but I can see the logic behind the strategy.

Wishful thinking, my friend - - next year’s 1st that Dumbass gave away is completely unprotected.

Such a comically inept negotiator and talent evaluator.

Wait you think I'm a Dubas guy? You need to be around more often my friend because you got the wrong one, there are others on this board that worship the ground Kyle Dubas walks on but I'm not and never have been one of them.

I thought he gave away this years 1st, turns out I'm partly right this years 1st is top 10 protected,

If SJ doesn't get it they get next years 1st.

If SJ gets the #1 pick in 2025 which I don't think they will as long as Sid is there but if they did that could potentially be historically bad.

Maybe someone should let their GM know that you need to keep your 1st round and 2nd round picks in order to do that..

They may get away with losing their 1st this year and only in the 11-16th range. That would literally be best case scenario but yeah, based on how it’s going there it probably would have been a lot better to just do nothing in the off-season rather than the EA Sports Be-A-GM Mode moves Dubas made.

I don't know what Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins have to do with Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Do they live rent-free in someone's head?
Dubas was the former GM. You really don't know why he's relevant in a discussion about the new GM?

I wanted them to sign Bertuzzi and Graves.

So what does that tell you?

It tells me Treliving and Dubas are about as smart as some random guy on the internet not even employed in the industry. I don't earn millions of dollars and have a team of advisors to provide me with guidance either. The standard shouldn't be outperforming me however.

It should be outperforming other NHL GM's, in which case Treliving can only be described as a failure so far.

Leafs have excellent PP quarterback in Morgan Rielly. Spends a premium to acquire Tyson Barrie, who will need PP time to be effective. In order to make the Barrie acquisition look better, your coach puts him on the PP to increase his point totals. The problem is that you haven’t actually increased your team scoring - you just took PP points away from Rielly and have them Barrie. Lesson learned, right?

Penguins have Chris Letang… and he acquires Erik Karlsson for a premium. They now Letang’s old PP points go to Karlsson and you just moved points around instead of adding them. Guess he didn’t learn….
