Couldn’t have been Ghostisbehere or Dumba at similar 1 year deals? Had to be the broken one with the worst defensive instincts in the league?
Top 4 and against other teams top 6'es. Not a shabby choice out of the slim options.gostibehere had been a 3rd pair offensive d playing against weaker opposition and who can play on pp1 basically his entire carreer and still the case.
Dumba do we rrally need to talk about him...
Klinberg played his entire carreer in a top 4. klinberg played 3 game healthy because of an injury he got 8 years ago and no one could predict...come on... If i would take a guest with 1 of those 2, sorry it would be klinberg
I think that's part of the problem. Some people are remembering 2020, instead of what's happened to him since then.I remember watching Berg and Heiskenen "back end skill" their way to a Cup finals appearance.
I mean how else would he be available to try your luck with if he wasn't currently on the down trend. You of all people appreciate the skill argument on the backend. I know for a fact I don't have to convince you how untouchable a current "working" top 4 offensive dman is.I think that's part of the problem. Klingberg isn't a top-4 defenseman anymore, top-4 offensive defensemen aren't untouchable, and we didn't really need a top-4 offensive defenseman, or to throw expensive darts at somebody who was not only on a downward trend, but at the bottom of the cliff.I mean how else would he be available to try your luck with if he wasn't currently on the down trend. Throw dart move, a dart that the Leafs have to throw by design of their current team, that cost zero assets with a 1 year backout that failed.
after rielly, McCabe id #2 amount D with 17 points... rielly is suspended right now and keafs had nobody to replace him offensively... so yes leafs need a dman able to bring offensiveKlingberg isn't a top-4 defenseman anymore, top-4 offensive defensemen aren't untouchable, and we didn't really need a top-4 offensive defenseman, or to throw expensive darts at somebody who was not only on a downward trend, but at the bottom of the cliff.
If we wanted a bottom pairing offensive defenseman, we could have just played Timmins. There's a big difference between taking a risk on a 25 year old at league minimum to fill a 7th D role, and taking a risk on somebody like Klingberg at over 4m for a critical role he can't handle.after rielly, McCabe id #2 amount D with 17 points... rielly is suspended right now and keafs had nobody to replace him offensively... so yes leafs need a dman able to bring offensive
and last season he played in anaheim where every d looking bad. Simon Benoit is a great exemple of it
how can you tell he cant handle, you saw him playing 3 game healthy this season where he had 3 pts in 3 game and was looking good in general or because he sucked like every player in anaheim? If we wanted a bottom pairing offensive defenseman, we could have just played Timmins. Because he's shown that he can't handle it for a while. His issues extended beyond just Anaheim (not that his performance in Anaheim can just be ignored), and nobody is talking about +/- or empty nets.i dont know whats your definition for a while, we certainly dont have the same one...in anaheim he looking bad, thats it.
his last season in Dallas he was good but you will probably go watch +/- and say oh wow he was so trash defensively .. but you didn't consider than probably 18 of those goal was empty net goal when Dallas tried to come back in game because he was always 1st dman to step in. And he was never playing to protect a lead do didn't get +1 for an empty net goal
vs mtl he was leafs best D, no doubt about it
vs minneso he was fine
vs chicago like the entire leafs vs chicago this season, he didn't look great.
Cowan just broke Marners point streak record in Toronto.I wouldn’t trade any draft picks but I’d definitely try to dump Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan on someone.

In his first 3 games with us, he bled chances and goals against; just like his other 11 games. In fact, at 5v5 during those 3 games, he was on the ice for just under 35% of the team's ice time, in largely sheltered situations, and yet was on for over 56% of the team's total expected goals against and over 72% of our team's total high danger chances against.
Treliving’s best move was not giving away a 1st round pick, a second round pick, a top prospect, a middle six forward and a #4 defenceman for the overpaid and overrated Erik Karlsson.I never thought the saving graces of Tre's first offseason would have been Benoit and Jones yet here we are....

After Willie's deal I don't see how MM doesn't get a healthy raise. Did Treliving just slide a contract over to Nylander and say fill the numbers in? And this was the tradeable guy. I thought Tre had a gun to his head with Huberdeau deal but now I am not so sure. He couldn't "win" a Nylander trade so he pivoted to a gross overpayment as his plan B? Any sliver of hope is tied to massive cap growth and the GM figuring out he is not paying salaries in Canadian dollars. Mitch at $12+ is coming but at least thats the last big money for a while. I just hope they extend him before he has a hot startYour right, as long as Marner isn’t given another ridiculous contract and JT is gone or playing for peanuts there is still a sliver of hope……..
He’ll aways have Bieber……..
A curious signing given what the clubs needs appeared to be but gone on LTIR so it doesn't matter now. Even more bizarre was that Dumba was their first target because he looked completely used up his last year in Minnesota. The hitting stopped, the offense died, and these are the only things that made him an NHL D man. Too bad Kampf didn't overplay his hand as well.Simon Benoit was looking totally trash defensively in Anaheim too and had to start in AHL to create himself a chance to play in NHL and hes probably right now 1 of 2 best D defensive side of the puck.
i know and i saw those game and a lot of it coming with Mccabe who played awful hockey like 1st 25-30 gm of regular season even when he moved from klinberg, hes still struggling pretty hard
exemple its hard to blame klinberg on 3v1 leafs gave up vs habs because of a bad mccabe pinch at the wrong time
The reality its we will ever know what should happened with an healthy klinberg all year long
People might not be happy with the Bertuzzi signing but if you could undue the signing would you? I'm betting most people would prefer to keep him. You simply won't find a gritty 3rd line winger capable of going off in the playoffs for 5 million that won't cost a 1st round pick. His value might be down right now but he can go off at any moment.
They are hard to find in the sense you don't know whose gonna pop off and when. You built that list off hindsight alone. Bertuzzi is a name that gives you good odds.Yeah gritty 3rd liners for under 5 mil are impossible to find.
I can only think of Barbashev, Stephenson, Amadio, Lehkonen, Nichushkin, Paul, Perry in the last 3 years exclusively on 3 teams that won the cup. Everyone else is giving up 1st+ for 5 million dollar 3rd liners left and right.
