Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

Yeah gritty 3rd liners for under 5 mil are impossible to find.

I can only think of Barbashev, Stephenson, Amadio, Lehkonen, Nichushkin, Paul, Perry in the last 3 years exclusively on 3 teams that won the cup. Everyone else is giving up 1st+ for 5 million dollar 3rd liners left and right.

You left Reilly Smith off your 20/20 hindsight list.

Was there a reason for that? Or was it because that also would have cost assets (3rd round pick) in addition to the 5 million dollars?

Why are you saying this in a Treliving thread? Not getting any breakout performances from the depth forwards has been a systematic issue for years. At least Tre threw darts at names that might actually do something in the playoffs for once instead of throwing Cups away with fluff

Not upset about getting embarrassed every single year in the playoffs with proven loser, fired GM Dubas.

Very upset new GM’s off-season players aren’t putting up enough fluff points in the regular season.

Kind of shows you where one’s priorities are.

Tre needed to make a big trade, miss the playoffs and let his trade partner draft in the top 10 to get any love around here I guess :sarcasm:

That reminds me of Brian Burke. At least Burke traded for someone young with their entire career ahead of them though.

Simon Benoit was looking totally trash defensively in Anaheim too and had to start in AHL to create himself a chance to play in NHL and hes probably right now 1 of 2 best D defensive side of the puck. i know and i saw those game and a lot of it coming with Mccabe who played awful hockey like 1st 25-30 gm of regular season even when he moved from klinberg, hes still struggling pretty hard exemple its hard to blame klinberg on 3v1 leafs gave up vs habs because of a bad mccabe pinch at the wrong time The reality its we will ever know what should happened with an healthy klinberg all year long
Benoit had a poor year last year, as a young 24 year old defenseman in his sophomore year. It's reasonable to take a chance on him at league minimum to be a 7th D and potential injury fill-in for the bottom pairing. Without even getting into the specific issues and red flags with Klingberg, it's fundamentally a much different risk calculation to sign somebody at over 4m to fill a critical role in the top-4. No, McCabe was not the problem.

Wait. So Treliving is doing a great job? Difficult to tell which thread I'm in sometimes.

He's doing an objectively bad job so far, but some people don't want to acknowledge that yet, because there's still a chance that the team lucks into some playoff run that those people can incorrectly attribute to Treliving to pretend he hasn't done a poor job.

So basically your whole theory on playoff hockey is luck. Ergo, visa vi, concurrently

I think this team has the fingerprints of both Treliving and Dubas on it, and their success or failure isn't exactly attributable to just one or the other.

I don't care who gets the credit or the blame, I would just like the Leafs to make the playoffs and win the Stanley Cup, that's all.

Nice job by Tre realizing D was good enough to at least make the playoffs and not panic trading the 1st round pick earlier in the year. 1st rounder must be used wisely if it's leaving us.

Saying this now because the unit stepped up big time with Rielly out. We didn't expect this.

Well damn. If Keefe didn't toy around with Nylander so much the previous years, treating him like a complimentary player instead of a high usage superstar, we'd have known he can use his IQ to PK and we never needed to waste cap space on Kampf

Nylanders PK emergence has made Kampf and Jarnkrok waste of space vanilla fluff. Free it up Tre

Bertuzzi was signed for the playoffs so if the leafs make the playoffs I’ll judge the Bertuzzi signing on what he brings.

The leafs issue has been core 4 showing up in the playoffs when the games get tight and depth scoring. When it’s all said and done those two can still be the same reasons why this team fails.

Luckily for us Bertuzzis metrics suggest the points are coming soon .

Eh, if it's delayed until game 1, fine by me. That's when it matters most.

The brilliance of signing Bertuzzi as a FA means Treliving doesn’t have to give up a 1st round pick for him at the deadline.

Like when the Lifetime Loser Kyle Dumbass gave up a 1st rounder AND two 4th rounders for an injured Nick Foligno at the deadline.

It’s such a luxury to have a competent GM like Treliving instead of the incompetent Kyle Dumbass.

If youre expecting a 50+pts d without any red flag at 4M,i can tell you easily than you are in a dream

except kind of forsling who came out of no where... those kind of D will cost 7M+ when they will reach ufa market

and Mccabe yes he had a slow start, its a fact.

and yes klinberg made mistake when he was healthy but was not as bad than what your trying to convince yourself

I actually think the guy has done a good job bringing a group of talented individuals together. We seem to be more of a team. Slowly instilling what it means to be a Leaf, after 5 years of moving away from any culture to speak of.

He's obviously not done, and it's not a finished article, but he seems to be able to identify the glue pieces this team needs. He'll still have to get a high end defenceman, but he's only just got on the job.

Exciting times back in Leafland.

Gotta give Tre credit for one thing, these are only 1 yr deals

Yes, that’s another excellent move by Treliving.

Much different that the Lifetine Loser Kyle Dumbass foolishly giving a hack like Pete Mrazek a 3yr deal at $11.4M.

Then a year later Kyle Dumbass gives away a 1st rounder for a 2nd rounder to dump his mistake Mrazek.

Smooth move, now we will be inundated with it wasn’t really a 1st rd pick because it was late, and we only dropped 13 spots and knew the guy they wanted would still be there” responses
