Brad Richards Part II

I have not been going thru this tread, but I remember that while he was in dallas allot of guys were expressing concern over the concussion he suffered towards the end of that year. Despite spurts of decent play and accumilating points at times, truthfully richards has never looked like the same player since, not here and not in dallas.

Thank you, insightful, and explains a lot....

Is there ANY chance this could be the basis for a medical exemption, and we don't have to buy him out? Can we just give him whatever is the correct 8 figure settlement w/insurance, he would be considered medically unfit to continue play, presumably past LTIR, and then he still gets lion's share of $$ but we don't have cap issues?

Someone on one of the columns accessed through Yardbarker asked, as to buying out Richards this season or next, w/big dif of payment, suggested keeping.

I replied:

The numbers don't lie. But, as to:
"Is it really a wise move for the franchise to swallow an additional $6 million just to banish Richards AND fork over the cash to pay his replacement?"

The answer is it would depend upon the replacement.

That $$ long term is best spent on reduced cap dollars for guys like McDonagh +, unless Malkin would consider to come here next year, in which case other moves are needed for $$. However, short term, IF Chicago is unable/unwilling to sign LW Bryan Bickell and RW Viktor Stallberg (a lefty shot, maybe ok on the other W), then signing both these guys ONE YEAR ONLY could be a smart stop gap. (Why do they do it? Another solid full season verifying this year not a fluke would = even bigger payday contract.) That would be best move with Richards salary, assuming all of that falls into place.

Of course, some medical excuse = separation avoiding amnesty would be preferable if doable.

Bern, each team was awarded two amnesty buy-outs to go along with the new CBA. The amnesty buy-outs allow teams to buy out a player without any cap ramifications. The Rangers used one on Redden already. They more than likely will use their second and final one on Richards.

Let's assume the Rangers did not have a second to use on Richards. If the Rangers medical staff deemed Richards unfit to play, they could put him on LTIR and insurance would pay his paychecks with nothing going against the cap. An issue would arise if Richards wants to play (he isn't allowed to while on LTIR and might cry foul), or if the League smells something funky about the entire situation.

Pronger is on Philadelphia's LTIR. Savard is on the Bruin's LTIR. They are de facto retired due to injury. Richards can still play, or might still want to.

Isn't Pronger still on Phillys books? Dont think they could remove BR like that.

He's "injured" if Brad Richards gets "injured" NYR retain his rights while hes not playing and not against the cap. They pay him his salary as structured but he is just becoming more and more out of shape and stays "injured"

If Brad Richards is ok with it its def the better option. I just cant see a player being cool with it.

BTW Richards has always played his best in elimination games. Always. Lets see what he provides for game 4

Hey all, i was just wondering what you guys felt Richards value was in a trade with the Leafs. (realistically) There is a lot of talk on our board as to whether we'd want him or not....issue is, IMO, if you guys buy him out he may not want to sign here. So that would mean we'd need to aquire him via trade if we want him.

Chalk that up as your very own Gomez trade. I'm down tho. Get Sather on the line.

If the Rangers trade Richards, and Richards eventually retires early, then the cap benefits the Rangers experienced the past two seasons will be recaptured in subsequent years. All signs point to Richards retiring before his current contract expires, so the Rangers should only trade him if its really worth the eventual cap penalties.

Where are the Brad Richards milk carton avatars?

Why would the Rangers trade Richards for a bad contract.

They would have the risk of cap benefit recapture with no compensation. I would argue that the trade compensation would have to be significantly above his market value to take that risk.

So they will 99.9% buy him out this summer or next. Then teams can "break down his doors" on July 1st again.

But I would rather trade

To Toronto:
Richards and all liability to his contract

To NYR:

Free beer for the fans 2 games a year for 10 years.

Is that at MSG or ACC? I know what Canadians can drink.....if you guys drink as much...no deal.
