It was a foregone conclusion that the Rangers were going to use their second amnesty buyout on Richards after the 2013/14 season. The mindset was to take advantage of his contributions before the amnesty buyout deadline then cut bait. But he's got nothing left in the tank right now, and is untradable because of the CBA's new Cap Benefit Recapture clause. Why keep him around one more year and risk being unable to buy him out due to injury?

Perhaps, but being a healthy scratch in a playoff elimination game does not bode well.

At least we'll have speculative threads until the end of time. :D

Broadway Brad should have been focused this off-season. The fact is the guy got paid and then he got lazy. Happens to 95% of the big time free-agents we sign. All this BS about him being proud and how he will work hard this off-season is all cheap talk. Fact is being bought out is probably the best thing brad can hope for so he can sign a new contract with another team and make even more $$$. Brad won his cup, now he is getting paid, his drive to win is gone, and his mudskating brain-dead passing this past season proved that for me.

No mulligans allowed. A team cannot re-sign a player for the season following the buyout.

You wouldn't be able to re-sign him the season after the buyout...


edit: Mike covered it... that'd be too easy of a loophole; though even if it were allowed, I would have a tough time believing a player would willingly sign with a team completely lacking faith in him, right or wrong, obvious or not.
 
Good riddance. Torts put him on the fourth line. Now he is a healthy scratch for an elimination game. The Rangers gave him $60M 22 months ago and now he is a healthy scratch. If you can't see where this is headed,..........and ...........!!!!
 
Brad Richards needs to find a way to reinvent his game. There's nothing lazy about the player, he just had an early decline in ability. The players who stay in the league into their late 30s find a way to reinvent themselves to be different, generally more savvy, players than they were at the peaks of their careers. I think Richards can do that if he admits that he must, but it won't be here. I'm okay with that.
 
i still wouldn't buy him out. give him another year...theres almost NOTHING worth spending money on this offseason, might as well hope that a former 90 pt/year player regains his form than to just piss him away for nothing with no real options elsewhere.
 
I still think Richards is back next year and will be bought out in summer 2014. It's obviously got its Pros/Cons to amnesty him this year.

PROS:
- Remove a major cap hit to make it easier to re-sign McDonagh, Stepan and Hagelin
- Allows team to have more cap stability throughout season
- Gets team to allow more youth in the lineup

CONS:
- Might put too much pressure on Lindberg and Stepan
- Lose some leadership
- Chance he has bounce back year and Rangers miss out on it

I'm up in the air on bringing him back. I'd like for Lindberg to be brought along slower and not be forced into playing a more significant role. But on the other hand, Richards sucks. A real Catch-22.

It's whatever to me.

You aren't buying out Richards to go out and find someone to replace him with, you are buying him out because he's ineffective and you already have his replacement on the roster. I think if Stepan hadn't stepped forward this year the way he did, Richards would get another year here. That isn't what happened.

This is Torts wanting to deflect blame. No way we are more likely to turn 3-0 without BR than with him.

How much of a leader can you be when you're not an effective player? Honest question. I don't know but wouldn't wager that you can be that effective.

Mike Babcock on Hockey Central yesterday said a player who used to be a star player whose game is deteriorating is the hardest to coach.

with the play of Brassard and Stepan i doubt Richards is back. Lindberg will be either on the Wolfpack or on NYR... i wouldnt be shocked if he like Hagelin plays for a few weeks then gets called up to stick.. Rangers need a center with some size..6'3 6'4... Rangers arent big down the middle.... id love a guy like Ryan Kesler but he has been injured as of late...
 
Not buying out Richards because there is nothing to spend money on is not a good reason.

That is the root of the NYR UFA problems. Always needing to spend money on the big name

Old? He JUST turned 33. He's still young. People around here talk like the guy is about to be sent to a retirement home.

If he cared, he would have stayed in sick shape during the lockout. AS you get older, you have to take longer and longer to get prepared for a season and be in game shape. He was no where near ready to play at the start of the season and it has shown through immensely through these past 5 months.

Strong point. As bad as he has been, we have a better chance with him playing than we do of Newberry or whomever else plays and gets 3:43 of ice time in the remaining games.

I wonder if he is feeling the heat though. I would've thought he has a leash given last year's run and the fact it was a wierd, lock-out season.
