In a vacuum I would have no issue with Marchy getting a couple games suspension. In fact I would welcome it. The league doesn't need that kind of crap. The problem is that the wheel of justice is so darned inconsistent that suspending a player for something nobody else has ever been suspended for is absolutely bush league and laughable. Screw this whole history of suspension/fines thing. Screw the whole "was the player injured" crap. And definitely screw the selective nature of discipline. Just have a consistent set of punishments for certain actions and then dole out those punishments regardless of history, injuries, if your name is Crosby, etc. Anyone who knows anything about the psychology of punishment and correcting behavior can see that the manner in which the NHL handles things is the exact opposite of what is effective. If the league wants to cut down on stupid and dangerous behavior then it needs to start acting like it and end this charade that is the DoPS. It's pathetic, ineffective, ignorant, and a complete sham.

This totally. I am all for more suspensions. A clear cut minimum for acts regardless of past and status. That only comes into play for adding more games. BUT, just like slewfooting and low hip checks, Marchand's suspensions for those were supposed to be precedent setters, but the only precedent was Marchand is the ONLY one to get suspended for those.

No idea if it's true but read somewhere that they haven't suspended a player for a spear since '08.

Prust and his 'best money I've ever spent', quote still drives me nuts (pun intended). - 'Sure, some people give to charity, others put their kids through university or help their parents in retirement - me, that all pales compared to spending thousands of dollars so that you can hit a grown man in the testicles with a wooden stick.'

Okay, so it is pretty reprehensible to do to someone, but at the same time, it is pretty damn funny in what I think is its intended context of making light of the situation. I just doubt he was being completely serious there. And maybe I am strange or in a tiny minority, but when he did that to Marchand, as much as I wanted him kicked out the game, I laughed a good bit too.

Really? He didn't seem like he was making light of it at all. Seemed really contrite and broken up over it? Lol

The Prust spear was far "more intentional" than Marchand's.

I was referring to the quote that b in Vancouver posted, not the post-game remark. He surely wasn't contrite- he chuckled a bit in that interview as well. I am sure it was intentional, and he needed to be penalized for it, but at the same time, I just don't get that he was taking the whole thing too seriously at all.

Which brings up another pet peeve I have with the NHL discipline system- if they want this stuff to stop happening, you can't penalize a multi-millionaire $5k and expect it will make any difference. Prust probably truly never missed that money at all even though he was not a highly paid guy in the league at the time.

My point was there is no way in hell the DOPS should suspend Marchand when Prust got off with a fine.

And then he mocked the league after.

yeah, then we are in agreement here :) Prust made a joke of it and the paltry fine he received, and yeah no way should Marchand get any worse than that. But the DOPS is not the model of consistency and even-handedness that it should be. Would not be shocked if they do worse to Marchy.

Same with the NHL pretending to care about concussions and suspending players 1-3 games for headshots.

TSN's Dreger says Marchand has already gotten breaks multiple times with past incidents. The wait time for a decesion might be an indication that the NHL is struggling with how to handle this situation. No matter which way it comes down, a backlash will ensue between the camps that see it as too much discipline accessed versus those who see it as not enough.

The league's stars get unlimited breaks, they can't start the crackdown now. You could bring a highlight reel of dirty plays from Crosby and Malkin.

If they want to start bringing down the hammer on stick infractions, it needs to be communicated as such during the offseason. To do so at the end of the season right before the playoffs while we have examples of other similar or even worse stick infractions would be an asinine move by the DOPS.

Everyone but Marchand. You can be sure he's get a game or 2, if he gets more then 2 I think the DOPS office will be surrounded by furious Bruins fans, mind you with Hab lover Quintal there, all bets are off.

IDK...seems like in each game Brad gets called for WAY more than other players who do exactly the same thing.

Also he gets slashed and abused every game with NO calls.

As I have said before he should NOT have done what he did but I hope (for once) he gets what ANY OTHER player would get for the same slash.

If this is the case, they should just give him a game and be done with it, explain why they are setting a new precedent OR

Don't suspend him because of the current precedent, fine him the max, let him know he's gone a minimum of 5 games upon his next dangerous infraction, and release a statement to the whole league stating next season spears (and injury causing slashes for that matter like the Crosby finger bust incident) will get you suspended

This is exactly what needs to happen. Fine him, tell him not to screw up again, and issue a statement. Done and done. :yo:

I don't get why they couldn't have had the hearing yesterday. It's not like they don't know how to reach Marchand

I don't have a problem with Marchand sitting for a game.

Yes, Prust did the same thing and walked with just a fine, but that was a stupid decision by the league, in my opinion. I don't agree with making a second stupid decision simply because you screwed up the decision with Prust.

Pitchforking players in the nards is something that the league shouldn't tolerate and a game suspension (on top of the game misconduct) seems fair to me.
