In a vacuum I would have no issue with Marchy getting a couple games suspension. In fact I would welcome it. The league doesn't need that kind of crap. The problem is that the wheel of justice is so darned inconsistent that suspending a player for something nobody else has ever been suspended for is absolutely bush league and laughable. Screw this whole history of suspension/fines thing. Screw the whole "was the player injured" crap. And definitely screw the selective nature of discipline. Just have a consistent set of punishments for certain actions and then dole out those punishments regardless of history, injuries, if your name is Crosby, etc. Anyone who knows anything about the psychology of punishment and correcting behavior can see that the manner in which the NHL handles things is the exact opposite of what is effective. If the league wants to cut down on stupid and dangerous behavior then it needs to start acting like it and end this charade that is the DoPS. It's pathetic, ineffective, ignorant, and a complete sham.
This totally. I am all for more suspensions. A clear cut minimum for acts regardless of past and status. That only comes into play for adding more games. BUT, just like slewfooting and low hip checks, Marchand's suspensions for those were supposed to be precedent setters, but the only precedent was Marchand is the ONLY one to get suspended for those.
