The NHL and its inconsistency on player punishment is a complete and utter clown show. Far more egregious things have gone completely unpunished this season, yet the NHL suspends Marchy for the final two games of the season in a heated race to the wire for something it has never suspended anyone for in the past. Yeah, makes sense to the rumdums at DoPS. Basically Crosby can get away with dirty plays forever because he has no record, therefore he cannot be punished. Nearly take a guy's finger off. Fine! He's never done it before. Hit a guy in the nuts. Fine! He's done it before but he's never been punished for it so nothing will be done. And I'm only using Crosby as one example of many I could use since he's so high profile. One thing is for certain: Marchand will never be able to spear DoPS in the balls because it has none to be speared.

He better come back from this rest with a bee under his bonnet. Seriously, man on a mission now.

**** league is still a **** league. No consistency. Now the bar is set, let's see how bad they stray from it.

The bar is set anew on a weekly basis with them. We all know how far they will stray from it.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I'm not at all.

Nobody has ever got suspended for the nut-shot before, ever, until today.

Some consistency would be sweet.

(I don't even have a problem with brad getting a suspension, as long as everyone else who makes the same play, also gets a suspension.)

My sentiments, exactly. I actually think a nut shot should be a suspendable offence and I don't really have an issue with Marchand getting 2 games for it....sort of. My issue is Marchand getting 2 games when nobody has been suspended for it in the past.

Unprecedented, excessive and inconsistent.

If that's what's that line is, I hope it's enforced for everyone moving forward.

It won't be, and you know it.

Crosby will nail someone in the nuts "accidentally" for like the 5th time in his career, and get nothing.

Look, I have zero issue with Marchand getting a game or two for it. It shouldn't be a thing in the sport. But I do have an issue with what I know will be completely inconsistent rulings on the matter down the road.

I have no problem with the suspension, it's the precedent that's the issue. The NHL can't mete out discipline for the same offenses based on the number on the player's back. Let's see what happens next time someone other than Marchand does it.

I think he got what he should have gotten, but from now on whoever does this has to be treated in the same manner.

I think that is where the league has so many people furious with their discipline department, as it is the most inconsistent in sports.

Meh. It doesn't hurt the Bruins playoff chances (although at the time of the penalty, it certainly could have).

Marchand cost himself the chance at 40. Also meh. He knows how fine of a line he walks. It was unnecessary.

I love his skills, but this stuff drives me crazy. Hope he behaves in the playoffs.

It could be the difference in playing Washington, Toronto or Ottawa...

Correct.

This is the problem with this decision.

Another stupid rulling by Quintal.

Is there any other kind?

Prust does the exact same thing to Marchand = $2500 fine

Crosby swings his stick at a opposing players hand hard enough to severe part of his finger and put that player out for weeks = Zippo

Marchand spears Dotchin, Dotchin sells it like a pro soccer player and doesn't even leave the game = 2 game suspension

The only silver lining here is Marchand won't miss any playoff games.

But like it or not, this just increased the chances of meeting the Caps in the 1st round with Boston's best offensive player on the sidelines the next 2 games.

It's not the punishment but the inconsistency that infuriates me.

Somewhere, in a shady Dunkin Donuts, Casey Afleck is laughing that Marchand got suspended for a vanilla nut tap.

The league's stars get unlimited breaks, they can't start the crackdown now. You could bring a highlight reel of dirty plays from Crosby and Malkin.

What's funny about this statement (not funny ha-ha but funny odd) is that Marchand is in fact a legit league star. However, he will never get a break. Ever.

It could have been the difference against Tampa also and it wasn't. There's other players on this team that will step up like against Tampa.

This is what happens when you do something dumb and leave it up to the league figure out.

Talk about an easy decision, do we make Crosby the example, or a guy everyone hates in Marchand?

Ah yes, 'The Marchand context'. One of the most revered of all hockey contexts.

Imagine a group of NHL officials sitting in silence in a dimly-lit room, cigars in hand. Time appears to stand still until someone finally stubs out their cigar, leans forward slowly and says "...but it was Marchand".

Still, as has been said, I have no idea with a nut shot being deemed suspension-worthy. It's as unsportsmanlike as it gets. It's just that you know for a fact that the next time it happens, nothing will be done.

You know that's not going to be the case though, right?

I'm fine with it. It's what I expected.

They have to set a precedent for this kind of stuff. Can't keep fining people increments of $2500. Extremely selfish and stupid play on Marshy's part. He's really bloomed as a player, he has to realize he's a leader, too. This is not what a leader does.

He ought to be kissing everyone on the team's feet. If they lost on Tuesday.. man this would have a way different vibe and potential consequence.

At least we don't need to worry about our star player getting injured before the playoffs. As for the ruling, laughable, the B's will have Marchand's back tonight.
