The thing is that Boston never was truly #1 cup favourite (well, they were this year, but only after RS- in fact before season some people picked them to miss playoffs), almost always were among top 5-7 favourites, but never number one- every year was, like sure, it won't be biggest surprise ever if Boston wins the cup, but also won't be the biggest surprise if they won't...

They also never had a player like Crosby, Ovechkin or McDavid, never had "team of destiny" like Tampa and Colorado (when you feel, at some point a cup is destinated for them), and yeah they DID win a cup early with simmilar core...

Overall- one cup, 2 finals, 3 PTs plus succesful retool in the middle of it all (they missed playoffs twice in the row, then quickly regained their contender status) is pretty allright for this generation of players, not big underachievement at all...

Outside of Bergeron, Krejci, and Marchand, this core is pretty different than the cup team with Lucic, Horton, Chara, Seguin, Seidenberg, Thomas, Rask, Soupy, Ference, and so on. Did I miss anyone who's still around?

Cool they won a cup 12 years ago...Should've won atleast 1 more cup if not 2. They have had some amazing teams. They've choked, plain and simple!
They won the f***ing Cup. There's 2 or 3 teams during that span that can give critic to them. They're still in the top5% of the entire NHL from last 12 years.

Without Chara and Thomas, Bergeron can't win. He's overrated the same way Toews was except Toews at least has 3 cups to show for it.

I mean they might as well rename the Selke at this point, since Bergeron's won so many of them.

He's very far from overrated.

His team, however...... yeah, I'd say this season was a colossal failure and they were definitely overrated, same as Tampa in 2019.

The OP in this thread demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of hockey.

The randomness factor in hockey is high. Anything can happen in a 7 game series. Attributing cup wins to team talent simply isn't going to be a reliable metric. And it isn't.

The 82-game regular seasons are a better metric of "fraud." Over the past 10 seasons, the Bruins have won more games than any other team, with the Lightning 2nd and the Capitals 3rd.

He's not overrated as a defensive forward, but he's overrated as a leader

Yes. They won the one in 2011 thanks to Tim Thomas and have been losers for over a decade now. Bruins are the definition of not living up to their potential, always great until it matters. Time for them to move on from their core/legacy players, they’ve had 12 years of failure.

Ah yes, it was all due to Tim Thomas. That explains perfectly why another goal tender was able to put up nearly identical stats behind that same stellar defense a mere two years later.

Good point, they do have the 2nd Stanley cup, forgot about that one.

I wouldn’t consider Horton, Seguin, Seidenberg, both goalies, a 4th liner, and Andrew Ference part of that Stanley Cup winning core. You might as well just name the whole team at that point

My point is that they only have 3 players still on the team. Not claiming Campbell was a vital piece.

Weren't the Bruins expected to decline hard this year, with early injuries and other question marks? I think the regular season was more of the anomaly than the first round exit.

The only reason for the epic failure was an epic achievement.

As good as Boston has been since the 2011 Cup, this has never been their core's era. Like the Kings, they snuck in there during the Crosby/Hawks era to win the Cup before anyone knew what happened. Then we went back to the Crosby/Hawks winning the Cup, then went directly to TB with Stamkos and Hedman. 2019 was the Bruins chance, and they had their opportunity on home ice, like last night.

To still have 3 players on the team 12 years later is pretty impressive. I would be surprised to see if there are any teams with more than 3 players from 12 years ago. My Rangers have 0 players currently from their 2010-2011 season.

Some anonymous internet poster calls Patrice Bergeron a fraud.

Stanley Cup winner, Selke Trophy winner over and over, Captain, and a player universally respected across the league. Beacon of the community, person who gives back regularly to local kids and hospitals, and just a class act, etc, etc, etc.

And some dude called @Fatty McLardy , I expect likely having his cable bill paid by his mom, calls him a fraud......

Interesting place this HF Boards sometimes. I guess we have to let everyone have their say. But it sure dumbs down the planet, that's for sure.
Even as a fan that hates the Bruins, Patrice Bergeron will go down as one of the most under-appreciated players ever. Sad if last night was it for him
