We built an identity without Boll. Are we ready to change that so we can play Boll 6-8 minutes a night? I don't see how we can put him right in the lineup after missing all that time with each game being so important.

We'll see.

The problem with Boll is not that he's a one dimensional fighter - he's easily more versatile than most fighters out there. The problem is that you have to justify taking someone else out of the lineup in order to put Boll in, and we just can't do that now.

I think having Boll in against a team like Philly makes some sense to me. They appear to be the only real physical team we have left. Boll for Comeau who cares. Boll for Tropp maybe a bit of concern but you gain physicality at the expense of speed. Meh.

Richards quote about "Boll being a big part of this franchise" made me laugh. I like Boll, but he is an average 4th liner. It's such a ridiculous comment. I don't understand the love affair with all these 4th line players.

Why is it so hard to see that Boll means a lot to this team?

If Boll can play, he should be in. He wears a letter.

Fighting in the NHL today is not what it used to be.... I'm a Fight Club old school guy but to be honest, fighting is on the out and I think it's a good thing...

The Blue Jackets do not need a fighter, if Boll can be a Cory Tropp type guy fine, but the days of earning a pay check by fighting is coming to a close... I think head concussions etc. is one of the drivers of this trend…

Let's see what the guy does in the next few games before we pass judgement on him. Given the high value Coach Richards puts on hitting and physical play (not talking about fighting), there may be a place for him in the lineup.

Exactly, he's one of the captains for a reason. Doesn't matter if most of you don't understand it, the coach and players do and that's all that matters. He should be in over Tropp or Comeau, he's an upgrade over them. We aren't looking for scoring from our 4th line, that's a bonus. We are looking for hits, forechecking, disrupting the other team, and having someone willing to fight to change momentum and stir things up when we can't get going. I hope he plays.

Why do you think fighting being on the way out is a good thing? I've never seen ***** in the seats during a fight or someone going for a cup of coffee. Most of the contenders have really tough teams. We need that toughness in the lineup as things get chippier down the stretch.

Boll is, to me, the last of the "old Jackets." I hope he gets in there and changes my mind, but that's what I feel when I hear he's back. Great community guy and I know the coaches value him, so my mind is open. My heart just flashes back to our history when I see him on the ice.

That being said, the only other player who brings to mind the former CBJ is RJ and he's played hard this season and so my point is, well, never mind.

Early morning ramble.

Are the days of assistant captains who were part of last year's magic run also old-fashioned?

Who knows as long as the letter wasn't a C. This letter stuff is totally irrelevant. Nash wore a C and he didn't lead the Jackets to the promised land.

Boll is Jody Shelley 2.0. People love him because he fights. Just like Jody he's well liked by the fans, he has a decent personality and is willing to do anything in the community. All great traits, but does he really make this team better? No. Sure, he may provide some vocal leadership in the room and is a good teammate, but other than a fight here and there, he really doesn't offer anything that makes this club appreciably better. I still say that when the games call for speed (like tonight) he sits, if it's going to be a slugfest (like against Philly) he plays. Richards has to be smart and pick his spots.

He probably forgot right around the time he realized that he wasn't playing against juniors players in the NHL.

I just don't think this is giving Boll his due. His numbers aren't eye-popping but he's in my opinion a valuable piece. Here I'll put myself out there: our 3rd period meltdowns this season wouldn't have happened if he were in the lineup. He left the lineup when our streak of winning games when we entered the 3rd with a lead was intact; soon after the Philly meltdown happened. The run last year was magic and even though this year the team shook off a poor start to get in the mix, it's an order of magnitude below what happened last year. I think Boll's presence on the active roster had something to do with those things. He's been here a long time, wears a letter (contrary to some of you, I think this is an important, not irrelevant, point). Don't take this to mean I'm saying his re-insertion into the lineup is going to earn him the MVP since we'll go undefeated. But at the same time, don't look only at his numbers and say he's interchangeable with Tropp and Comeau. He's just isn't. (Letestu is a different story and I could see him making a case for the MVP in the other thread)

I'd also like to hear someone who thinks JD/JK are the best thing since sliced bread and who also thinks Boll is an average 4th-liner at best reconcile those two thoughts with Boll's extension

As a member of neither extreme, I suggest that this might be possible by not being limited to seeing everything as either black or white. :)

Being slightly more creative with categorization doesn't absolve one of the necessity for comprehending nuance and "shades of gray" judgment. Well, assuming one wants to be intellectually honest, anyways.
