Matthews drew a penalty against Dubois....

I don't think being abused like a rag doll and then having offsetting roughing penalties count as drawing a penalty.

Next man up.

Now we're going to see and test Leafs organizational depth, and see how the Leafs respond to this new adversity here. Many times some players step up and the team doesn't miss a beat.

Rubins is a big and steady defenseman that moves around well and isn't inept with the puck. Pretty good defensively. He's more or less a left handed Holl in style.

Steeves is a strong fast skater that does smart plays. He's actually pretty skilled as well. He might not stand out on the 4th line with guys like Clifford and Engvall. He should be up in the lineup.

Thanks for this! Not sure how I feel about a left-handed Holl though...

Will they be up to the task? Guess we'll find out.
Whenever the subject of moving Holl comes up the go to excuse is there is no one on the Marlies capable of dressing for the Leafs.

That is not true. It has merely been explained to you that nobody on the Marlies is as good as Holl (who is a quality NHL defenseman), and there's no reason to dismantle one of the best defenses in the entire league for no reason. That in no way suggests that no Marlie is capable of filling in for the Leafs in an emergency situation.

Next man up

All good teams find a way to win with key players injured.

I'm not giving these guys an excuse, and I am confident they aren't giving themselves one either. Time to tighten it up.

Excited to watch Steeves and Rubins get a look. The good news is Steeves should have a bit of runway to work with here too with Spezza suspension and Marner being out long term. All he really needs to do is outplay Clifford, which shouldn't be hard. I wouldn't be surprised to see him climb up from the 4th line either. He's NHL ready IMO

Who from the marlies is in today?

Well, we'll see what happens in the spring but yes I do find it hard to imagine that this team could play as poorly as we've played in the last 4 series deciding games. But then again, I thought the same last year so I'm not counting on anything. We were so consistent all year, every time a team got hot and was closing in on us in 1st place it seemed like we played them and crushed them. And then up 3-1 against MTL, we played well in game 5 and 6 but Price held us off and then once again, we didn't show up for game 7. Even Zeke, the biggest homer on these boards called that the worst loss in franchise history which IMO is accurate and I absolutely did not see that coming.

I like this team so far, I like it a lot and I've even said that it's the best Leaf team I've ever seen and I've been watching for just over 50 years now. But I'm not taking anything for granted, that's for damn sure.
We RIDIN SPINNAS! RIDIN SPINASS!! IT DONT STOP!! WE RIDIN SPINNAS! WE RIDIN SPINNAS!!! IT DON'T STOP!!!!!!!

Bunting-Matthews-Simmonds (until marner is back) - no more dubois like BS with Matthews
Engvall-Kerfoot-Nylander
Ritchie-Tavares-Kase
Clifford-Kampf-Anderson

run this until Spezza is back from suspension and marner is back full time. Spread out offense a bit; ask Bunting to start shit up that Simmonds can finish and then capitalize on 4 on 4 hockey

With Marner and Spezz out, is it time to give Ho-Sang a shot in their PP position?

He's not suited for 4th line duty, so lines would have to be shuffled as well.

Whenever the subject of moving Holl comes up the go to excuse is there is no one on the Marlies capable of dressing for the Leafs.

The Maple Leafs have recalled defenceman Alex Biega, defenceman Kristiāns Rubīns and forward Alex Steeves from the Toronto Marlies (AHL).

The first thing I noticed about the 1st batch of call-ups and depth testing from the AHL team is that all 3 are "free wallet" UFA signings, and not coming from Leafs own drafting and developing system.

Marner is a big loss but Alex Steeves an undrafted NCAA college player is his replacement, while Dermott and Sandin replacements are 33 year old journeyman Alex Biega and Rubins who played in the ECHL with Newfoundland Growlers recently, and split last year between Marlies and also played in Denmark with Frederikshavn White Hawks on loan last year.

This will be interesting to see how this plays out and if we have other players currently on the roster that step up with added opportunity and try and make a bigger impact to offset the injuries.

It litterally does.

Also Matthews has 4 drawn penalties this year according to the NHL stats.

Pumped to get a look at Steeves & Rubins, not sure who I'm looking forward to seeing more... maybe Rubins.

I know Steeves is good & a really solid prospect but Rubins is potentially going to be the Leafs next shutdown guy or at least their 7th D.
