He’s a damn good defensive coach but I find some of his messages offensively contradicting

Wants them to hold onto pucks(presumably to wait for net traffic) but wants more shots to get through. Also says don’t miss the net which can also make a player gun shy to shoot.

Says he doesn’t want guys afraid to make plays but says the team needs to manage the puck well.

As a player I’d find that a bit confusing
Idk, all that tracks okay, and practically everything he's said after (most) the past two games has been accurate, players just not executing well enough, or "abandoning the gameplan" as he says.
Which also tracks, because we know the coaches are great, and putting in the work, scouting opposition and developing a plan, bit every game the players look the same and do the same things .

This game were tired and silovs/ep didn't help much, a few posts, still lots of missed/blocked shots.

Hoglander and ep1 with identical breakaways in b2b games and zero sog.
Any lead & they turtle.
Hughes created several great chances, made space, had nobody to pass to, got a good shot off anyways and easily stopped because as rick said, ppl were standing around beside the net watching.

Tons of the other chances miss completely, or the players seem to be waiting for the defense to block the lanes before passing/shooting.
It's really weird.

I think a (small) part of it is this team needs more dynamic offense, but anyone who's not barkov perfect defensively gets shipped out to trashville, or scratched/4th line mins.

I was going to post about his presser after last game outlining these contradictions. I think he does it to appear fair or balanced, but it just ends up being muddled.

I like Tocchet, but he's not above criticism. The team has to work so hard to generate so little. They look disjointed. He blames their execution, but if the players can't play the way you want them to after so long, it can't be all on them.

Optics are just awful. I would be happy with Cozens at this point (doubtful Buffalo even does that) to just get rid of the never ending drama and the fact his body is not built for the grind of the NHL and i fully expect this to happen over and over and it's incredibly painful to watch your top paid guy get rag dolled by pretty much anyone who can bench 150lbs
If there's one thing media has taught me about this city, the drama never ends. Not long until they turn on Quinn Hughes -- unthinkable, right? A lot can change in a year, all I'm saying.

Anyway, they shouldn't trot Pettersson out there in his current condition. He needs real rehab time and he's not getting it with top 6 minutes. It doesn't take a doctor to tell you how much slower and weaker he is than his peak, and no, I don't think it's an attitude problem.

elias petterson is our 2025 big country reeves

dude robbed this organization of $100 million dollars lol...nobodys trading for that f***ing contract

The media has been relatively babyshit soft on Pettersson up to this point. I want them to grill him for real now. That was a pathetic effort when the team needed him at a critical time.
It's almost like the management is asking for it.

"Nope, he's not injured." "Yep, he will play in the Four Nations."

"When are they going to start questioning the player? We're tired of waiting."

Part of it is entirely their own fault, they've had numerous opportunities to move off him and didn't have the zito quality balls. Waited and waited while he sewered his value ever closer to zero and now we're here, they're damn near stuck waiting for a resurgence that's probably never coming.

I just keep hearing complaints from Tocchet after every loss. "The team didn't do what I wanted them to do". Well I've got new for you: It's your job to explain or teach your players how to execute your plans. You've been saying the same things for a year straight now. Either you've completely lost the room or you aren't explaining to the players how they should play. Surely not all the players on the team are too dumb to follow instructions? Even if that was the case, you'd have to simplify your game plan then.

It's a valid point, but I think at this point he's exacerbated how this team's top guys outside of Hughes can be so hot and cold with their effort.

In his first calendar year here, he saw Petey explode for the best stretch of his career, then magically dissapear since February of last year. He rebuilt Boeser's game from being a guy who was looked at as a cap dump into a 40 goal scorer who was responsible in hiw own end - now he's all over the place too.

He's shown them how great they can be and what they need to do to be successful, and it's likely as frustrating for him as it is to the fans that their temperment & effort waxes and wanes so often. The common denominator for the team's problem is not the coach, it's pretty clear it's at the top of the lineup up front.

Defense got better after the roster composition changed.

I don't think it's worth discussing coaching when the guy just won a jack adams, was handling the teams offense for team canada a week ago, and the players love him... including the captain who 24h ago just glowingly reviewed him.

He's short three top six forwards right now. What's going on makes sense to me. If we had Terry and Horvat and 2023 ep up front, we'd look at things so differently.

If we ranked our forwards right now, without even looking at the rest of the league, i'm going to guess we have a bottom 5 group.

Wonder if Carolina would be willing to come back to the table if they're stuck with an unsigned Rantanen in a few days

I can understand the take on Toc to a certain degree. But if the players are not listening to him, that is going to be a VERY serious problem.

That was weird, but it usually is in Anaheim for the Canucks.

I'm so sick of capitulating on Pettersson I actually kind of do want him gone now. It only makes any sense as a "desperado" kind of move. One that either will change this franchise for the worse or better. Significantly. Make a stupid bet. I'm not even sure such a trade exists.

I really thought I was cooking with that EP/Bedard deal but it actually needs to be bigger.

There’s only one person who can fix this franchise

I don't think that Mike will ever want to deal with Fredo and his shills in the media . He was eviscerated and blamed for everything but global warming after he was fired.

Anyone that wants this team to finish 8 and get obliterated in 4-5 games is a masochist. I've never seen a canucks team more devoid of TOP 6 talent since the twins were forced to play with the wrong Granlund who was another favourite of the Benning brigade.

A smart front office would see that we are going nowhere without at least 2 legit top 6 players.

Every so often, in a long and at times tedious NHL schedule, one loss comes along that explodes just about all the myths, and the wishing, hoping and praying about what kind of team you really have. And tonight's loss was surely 'one of those games' for the Canucks.

With so much on the line, and every game now a 'must win'--the Canucks grab a 2-0 lead against a Ducks team without much to play for, and then fold like a cheap camp stool. They choke, allowing five goals in a row.

The only other one that comes close, was gagging on a three-goal lead against Seattle at home in basically the last three minutes, and then losing in OT. But in many respect tonight's result was worse, given the desperate circumstances.

Some people will continue to make excuses. They were using an AHL goaltender. It was the second-night of a back-to-back after an OT game the night before.

But the bottom line, is that legitimate playoff teams simply don't lose a game like that. That's just the hard reality of it.

I can’t fathom how someone can be making 11.6 million - the highest paid player on the team and REFUSE to play with swagger or look like he cares.

He’s not hurt. He’s clearly mentally ill or something. The personality of a wet paper bag doesn’t help either.

The only net-positive he has going right now is how punchable that alien dome is getting.

Oh but he skated kinda fast tonight!

Let the Miller/Pettersson rift fester so that both players are miserable.

Trade Miller for about half his actual worth.

Keep Pettersson and watch his value disintegrate.

Trade him for whatever you can get for him at this point.

Likely have to trade Hughes in the offseason before the situation repeats itself and he asks for a trade, and the media leaks it.

Experience Canucks hockey.

The pressers remind me of Travis Green days. Says the right things but the opposite is happening on the ice. According to some Tocchet should receive praise for the storm he was able to navigate the team through.

Moneypuck has the Canucks now last in expected goals. Seconds best in expected goals against. Without the shooting percentage being at an unsustainable rate, they aren't going to win much. They aren't even trying to win honestly.

Still in a playoff spot, and I choose to believe EP40 just needs a proper off-season routine to return to form as the game-breaking, 100-point forward we all know he can be.
