Didn’t catch the game but read some of the thread. Was Jones acceptable in his return?

What worries me about Trocheck... is the hustle a left over of Brind'Amour? Is he going to get complacent like everyone else?

Panarin was a different player in 2019, coming from Torts. We see his game has changed immensely from that season.

He almost scored on Igor. That's something.

He looked like a 5-6 defenseman. Some mistakes. Some decent plays.

What kills me about Panarin, he knows he struggles when he stops moving his feet but he always falls back into it.

He's living on the left wall again.... this is when he struggles

Personally, I think the games are boring (small concern, but it is an entertainment product) and the kids aren't doing anything (big concern). The guys are almost all healthy, which is worth mentioning alongside how we aren't getting the breaks in other ways since there are teams like Washington that are missing 5 major players, but I'm still not that fussed about being .500 or a wild card spot or wherever we are this early.
It’s not hat early anymore.

But yeah, he he main concerns about are that the kids suck, the team is dreadful to watch, and we’re not looking at all like a contender.

The fact that we barely squeaked by a horrible Sharks team for 2 points doesn’t make that go away, sorry everyone.

I was thinking about this too. The new guy who came from the team Jesper Fast called "the hardest working team he's ever played for" is giving the most effort every night. It will say alot about this core group of vets if Trocheck starts to adobt their bad habits.

It would further exhibit the need of a disciplinarian

Yeah, screw those stats that said we played pretty well and the eye test confirmed and they hit 3 posts. They outshot and out chanced an opponent basically for 59:40 and they won. Who cares damnit. Those last 20 seconds were like really bad.
The same stats that said we were a bad team last year but we still made it to the conference finals? Yes, I don't follow those blindly and I like mixing them with what I see.

Last night I saw a team that was struggling horrifically, again, against a bad team. We can keep going around in circles but what I see with my eyes also matters. It isn't 20 seconds, it's been 20 games of this.

we hit 3 posts, James Reimer outplayed Igor (only bc he had way more dangerous chances against) and we still won. good sign. the lines are still stupid, too. i wouldn't get too hung up on the near collapse at the end, they're on the road playing the Sharks in November, it's natural to lose concentration there.

Out shot the opponent 43-23

Out hit the opponent 32-19

Goalie made the saves when needed.

Win on the west coast.

And fans are wishing they'd lose or go to OT or something.
Did you watch the game? The Sharks commentators were laughing at how bad the games was. The entertainment factor was about the same as watching compost ferment. Both coaches should be made to skate burners for this crime against hockey.

But yeah, advanced stats look good and two points so everything is ok I guess.

Yeah, the stats that said we were a bad team last year, but we still made it to the conference finals. Which had nothing at all to do with our goalie posting a .935 sv% and 2.07 GAA, compared to the league average .907 & 2.92. Which is about a 45 goal swing in goal differential (putting the team to around the halfway mark of the league, instead of 2nd).

EDIT: Last season the team was 9th in the league with a +47 goal differential. 16th in Goals For. If Igor is league average. The team misses the playoffs.

Yes I watched the game. So it wasn't pretty. And f*** the Sharks commentator, their team sucks and they got no points AND their fancy stats sucked. So yeah, who gives a crap what they say.

I'll never get why fancy stats and what we see have to be diametrically opposed.

Guess what, if both teams suck, the computer has to pick one. It can't say both teams suck, because it's got to add up to 100.

When you outshoot the other team by 20 and control the puck then it's not as bad as you think.

The third period was awesome, it's a shame the last minute, with too many goofs is sadly the last thing we saw, even them trying to make it 2-0 was harder than it should have been with the empty net.

This is beyond bad luck.
I think that’s right. They control the puck very well which is more than half the battle. But they’re too predictable with the finishing. Long cross ice passes - and all the passing in general - allow the goalie to adjust. They need to mix it up more. Those plays are good in the right context but they need to give the goalie something to think about.

It's the same thing except we're not shooting 33%.

You guys can't analyze games outside of goals.
Yeah but even the best time series model of data assumes that the error term is random.

If we are not finishing well as a team, that may be an issue rather than just a noisy stretch in the data
