We’ve lost generations of memories: Davey Kerr, Chuck Rayner. I grew up hearing stories of Gump Worsley stopping enormous numbers of shots during the 1950s and early 1960s playing with terrible Ranger teams.
Writer: Gump, which team in the NHL gives you the most trouble?
Gump: The Rangers.

I spent a decade as a season's ticket holder with Eddie Giacomin. Although I can't recall any games in particular, they were certainly many.

JD in 1979 against the Islanders....yes.

But the best by far was Richter in 1994, especially against the Devils in games 6 and 7. Never forget that Richter twice eliminated the Devils and Marty Brodeur in overtime games. His performance in 1997 might even have been better than 1994. And of course, the signature moment for any Ranger goalie: stopping Pavel Bure on a penalty shot during the finals.

Yes, Tawnos.....Richter in the final of the 1996 World Cup against Canada: it is impossible for a goalie to be better than that.

Lundqvist: certainly to many to name both during the playoffs and the regular season: I remember one December game against the Stars in Dallas that was simple unworldly.

But for me, it is hands down, Richter in 1994. Until a Ranger goalie wins the proverbial "last game of the year," it will always be Richter.

I agree on your signature moment. Richter turns that finals series around with that penalty shot save on Pavel Bure. That's got to be the biggest save ever as far as I'm concerned. I really don't want to comment on things before 1971-72 when I started following the Rangers. Bure was as dangerous a shooter as anyone in the league. He made a tremendous move and Richter just shut him down. That was truly awesome.

Bure made on the same move on Richter when he was all alone at the all star game that year when Richter won MVP.

Before shootouts PS were so rare that you just knew when someone of Bure's skill received one he was almost certainly going to try to deke the goalie out of his pants, especially with Richter's aggressive style coming halfway out to the blue line to challenge.

Rangers-Islanders playoff game.

Eddie Mio

Islanders outshoot Rangers 20-1 in 1st period (I think). Rangers lead by 1 after one.

I think I got that right.
I like that you recognized Eddie Mio. I thought of JD "Save JD!" and Richter but Ed did have some cool moments.

Not much footage of Gump, Rayner, or Kerr, so it's hard to really judge them on the same level.

The Lester Patrick Story has become folklore.

Sports are funny like that, sometimes footage or energy adds to the legend (Reggie Jackson WS Homers, Eli in SBs 42 and 46) while others, it goes under the radar (Zubov's brilliant passing in 94, Jack Morris's Game 7 91 WS performance which in my opinion is the greatest game ever pitched.)

As usual, I got here too late, you guys already brought up the ones I would have listed.

Mio in 83 was great. Honorable mention to Glen Hanlon in '84. Those were both tough series.

Beezer in '86 as stated by Ranger Boy. We had NO business beating the #1 & #2 best teams in the conference that year. Beezer was fantastic in the Conference Finals too, but Roy stole that series, hands down. Game 3 was complete thievery & just the most frustrating game to watch. I think we outshot the Habs something like 44-20. I can still see Claude Lemieux celebrating the winner. ugh.

Richter in 94 against the Devils in Games 6 & 7 was just a joy (& torture) to watch. His team left him hung out to dry way too much only to have him bail them out, time & again. The first 10 minutes of the 2nd period in Game 6 was a goaltending display. He stopped endless odd man rushes one right after the other including a two on none. That game could've been 6-0 on the scoreboard before the Rangers pulled their heads out of their rears. First thing Messier said to the media after the game was, "you can talk about my hat trick all you want, but Mike Richter was the story tonight". Indeed, he was.

96 World Cup was another brilliant run for Richter. Games 2 & 3 of the finals was just amazing. Anyone remember when the buzzer sounded & the US was celebrating. The mics on the ice were turned up & the players were heard clearly on ESPN. Bill Guerin was hugging Richter & yelled, "I don't care what anyone says, you're the best (effin) goalie in the world!!"

The 97 playoffs for Richter was the bookend of a great year for him. He was terrific against Florida, but he just stymied NJ again. Games 3&4 at MSG were just vintage. Can't recall with certainty, but pretty sure it was Game 4 where he lost both his gloves & made a save with his bare hand after being knocked over in the crease. Completely took the series away from them. Too bad those were his last shining moments in the playoffs. Sigh.

Hank...Just too many to list. You guys have that covered.

Awesome choice. My mind immediately went to Mio when I saw this thread, but I for the life of me couldn't remember the specifics.

That "we got younger" trade (June 1983) still haunts me today. Three of my favorite players. Ron Duguay, Eddie Johnstone, and Ed Mio for Osborne, Blaisdall and Huber.

The 0-1 shootout loss to the Devils a couple of years back stands out in my mind, remember it being a great game from both goalies
Yeah I was going to say this. Brodeur and Hank had 51 and 45 save shutouts, respectively. It took 4 rounds of shootout for anyone to score a goal. Then Elias had to ruin it with the shootout winner.

Just saw a clip of Richter facing penalty shots. I forgot how quick and aggressively he played them.

YES there was a game against Dallas that really stood out to me.

Hanks game six against pitt to push to game 7 during our Cup Final run

Anti Raanta played a game too that stands out I can’t think who it was against but was absurd

Mike Richter to many to count

DIDNT mention richter in World Cup Final because t wasn’t a team game ( rangers game) but one of the best overall performances of all time.

Henrik in the Jokinen elimination game.

Richter in Game 6

Beezer in Game 2 or 3 of Flyers series in 1986.

Richter in like 1999 or 2000 in Detroit. Was an OT win.
