It's five weeks until the trade deadline.

The Oilers schedule for the next 2 weeks is brutal. 9 games in 15 days and they're all fairly tough matches:
SJ, LA, ANA, WPG, MIN, TB, FLA, CAR, PHI

Their goalies have a huge workload ahead of them. Injuries should be a legitimate concern. Not to mention exhaustion going into the playoffs, if they make it.

But Smith should be fairly fresh since he's barely played, so maybe this is one of those times he goes on a hot streak.

OTOH, if they go on a losing streak, there's no coach to fire and the season could be lost.

They're going to have to hang tough through these next two weeks to stay in playoff contention and I think that will determine whether they are buyers or sellers.

Probably not , but I also do not see too many team trading their number 1. If the oilers want one, they have to overpay. Or they get scrubs like Korp and pray.

What is Deadmantown gonna do with top prospects anyway?
May as well move them for proven whatever now before they get ruint and hit their Best (moved out of Edm.)Before Date.

EDM needs cap in/cap out trades.
Barrie+ Koskinen is 9m in cap
Fleury+ Murphy is 10.85m in cap

Without equal cap going out, EDM can’t afford cap coming in so they’d still need to add 1.85m in that trade scenario or lose it some other way.
This is why I don't see why we need Murphy and Barrie in this deal. There are teams that could better use Barrie and will give more in trade.

This trade makes more sense for Edmonton while still being a good deal cap wise.

To Chicago
Koskinen, 1st round pick (1.665M remaining cap)

To Edmonton
Fleury (2.590M remaining cap hit)

Edmonton has 716,304 in deadline cap space according to CapFriendly. So that means that with this trade as is, they would be 210K over the cap. So all it would take is to get Chicago to eat that value in retenetion. That's not much if it ends up getting them another first round pick.

The bigger issues are Holland's reluctance to trade his 1st for a rental (if we could figure out a way to make it Koskinen, Yamamoto, 1st for Fleury w/retention and Hagel, that might make more sense), and convincing Fleury to agree to come to Edmonton.

Edmonton needs cheap forwards to replace guys we won't be able to replace who will be coming free agents sooner or later, and to fill out the depth spots on the roster with affordable ELC players instead of scrubs that nobody else wants.

Ya that's kind of the way things go under a flat cap with most teams.

What nobody else can figure out is why Edmonton continues to ignore their goaltending situation while McDrai get pissier and closer to bolting from Edmonton. What a shame.

It isn't ignoring, its outright failure to improve it. That's the worst part - the part that should cost a GM his job. He's had how many years to address it now? But he keeps failing. He went after Markstrom. He went after Kuemper. We know he's asked about some bad goalies as well, like Martin Jones and Joonas Korpisalo. But he's failed to bring in that #1 guy. At least he didn't pull a Chiarelli and sign the wrong guy to a long term deal I guess, but "not making the same mistake as the last guy" is a pretty low bar to set. That bar is nearly laying on the ground.

Edmonton will not like the cost of a goalie this year. I think possibilities are rangers, blue jackets , Blackhawk’s and Sabres.

St. Louis Blues resign Husso and then trade Binnington <-> Koskinen+. Would Oilers take a gamble with Binninton's 6m a year till 2027 contract?

Doesn't seem like that bad of a schedule to me. If Edmonton is the team we thought they were SJ, LA and ANA should be divisional games they welcome. TB, FLA and CAR are tough, but ever team foes that eastern trip. PHI should be a cake walk. WPG and MIN are coin flips.

I want the answer to be nope, but we've been burned by stupid GM's making bad GM's about goalies before, so who in the hell knows. We already know he is okay with taking extra cap hit for someone with a winning track record (Keith), so who in the blue hell knows. I hope not, its not like our goalie coach will be able to pull Binnington out of whatever has caused him to regress.

Agreed, its the 9 games in 15 days that worries me. The team is so hot and cold, that if its a cold streak, then these 15 days could be the difference between playoffs and not.

To have a realistic shot at the playoffs, I think we need to come out of that stretch with 12 points, to leave us with 62 points in 54 games, which is a 94 point pace.

12 points in 9 games is 5-2-2, or 6-3. Not impossible, but definitely not easy either.

Jesus no. That's way too much. It doesn't make sense anyway. Chicago doesn't need Barrie but he's not a cap dump so it would be hard to agree on his value.

The Red Deer Rebels fan in me would love to see Brandon Hagel come to Edmonton but I don't know how to get there. Koskinen, 1st and 2nd for Fleury and Hagel would be interesting but Hawks fans probably think Fleury is worth more than I do.
hahaahaha Hagel is worth more than that on his own.

Worth is an interesting concept. Is it worth it for Chicago to take that in trade? Probably not. Is it worth it for other teams to pay the asking price Chicago apparently has for him? Also probably not.
Draft pick's aren't really as valuable to Holland and the Oilers anyway with so many swings and misses so,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Then the goalies that Edmonton has Will have to do it. Goalies not cheap this year. Edmonton will have to spend too much. I think there will be better deals in the off-season if you can wait it out.

We will trade you Binnington for a 2nd, and retain 2 million per year. A first we will retain 3 million.
