Just replayed the game, and man that last call was booty

For me, there were three calls against us that were at best questionable. There was also the tripping call against Bellerive in the second- that was just a body check that Karlsson fell forward on, I see that called wrong too often down here. And then Frisch's interference call, which assumes Frisch's intent was to block off Stevens. On replay it just looked like he was going to get the puck and Stevens took the same path as him and ran him over.

I will say though that the two penalties that we took to go down 5 on 3 were legit, and that was what started our collapse in this game. So not like I'm pointing the finger 100% on the refs for last night. But they did a horrid job on top of everything else.

The four players delayed by travel not participating tonight. Western conference also short equipment manager/trainer. And Remenda had to replace Nollenberger for on ice interviews.

Well, that was pretty fun, all things considered. Never been to an All-Star skills competition before.

Mukhamadullin did show up, and they made the curious decision to introduce him to the crowd in the middle of an event, the "pass and shoot" competition, inbetween attempts. Everyone just sort of stood around and waited for him to shake hands with the other All-Stars. Just wait and announce him once you're done with "pass and shoot". He wasn't even competing in it anyway.

He did participate in the breakaway challenge, at least, the last event of the show. Honestly, I know this is a hindsight 20/20 sort of thing, but why are you having us play on the road, in Canada no less, the night before we host the All-Star Game?

they said on the broadcast that every team played yesterday. Which is somehow even stupider.

Speaking of, the broadcast for this was horrendous. Like I mentioned above there was constant audio issues including a ton of feedback (which sounded like it was happening in the arena). Obviously some of the slightly disheveled production was the result of Nollenberger not being there and Drew having to cover a dual role, but they also seemed constantly out of sync and had trouble keeping track of what was going on in the events. Plus there was no on-screen score bug or event progress tracker so for some stuff (like the rapid fire) you had no idea who was getting points or how many because the camera's contrast was cranked up so high that you really couldn't pick out the pucks going into the net against the bright white ice/boards/goalie pads.

I still had fun watching and there's something comfortable and entertaining about the very traditional approach of the AHL skills comp vs the often gimmicky NHL equivalent (though this year's version of that wasn't too bad). Makes me miss that the CHL Top Prospects game stopped doing a skills competition some time after 2005.

But that last part is part of what I mean too, Nollenberger didn't make it because he was covering our game up in Canada. Apparently some of our other staff was missing too and they were expecting to have them available for this event, so basically, if the Cuda have to play the night before, why not just schedule us at home? Or at least, someplace closer like Bakersfield. This scheduling was just asking for trouble.

Yeah we were getting a lot of feedback in the arena, especially early on. But I did still appreciate having the broadcast come on before the events, as that helped to explain the rules of what we were going to see next. They organized things pretty well, but the audio was just awful.

If I'm not mistaken during the broadcast it was mentioned that every single team in the league was playing the day before the ASG festivities. That's a bafflingly stupid decision considering the logistical nightmare of having to coordinate 15+ flights into a city for the next day and the risk of something like inclement weather.

Yes, that's firing-level incompetence.

I imagine it's hard for the AHL to give up weekend dates--even just one--across the board, so this is the compromise they've come up with to maximize attendance and revenue, but it most certainly a potential problem, as we've seen.

And then the "solution" of having the All-Star Game on a Monday night--a tough sell particularly in an NHL city like San Jose--can possibly lead to poor attendance and a sort of sad look for an ASG.

I get where they're coming from but are things that desperate? It's a bad look in many ways.
