Barracuda about to get underway in Tucson. Same lines as Wednesday, with Chrona in net this time.

Josh Doan opens things early on a penalty shot, 1-0 Tucson. That breakaway sort of came out of nowhere.

---

And now Doan scores again on the power play to make it 2-0 midway through the first. Play isn't as lopsided as the box score looks, but Roadrunners are capitalizing on their chances. Cuda heading to their first PP.

The cowbells are already driving me nuts.

Sabourin drops the gloves with Montana Onyebuchi, pretty good tilt.

---

Ever since I typed the above post, the Cuda have been looking awful, so I take it back, it is now pretty lopsided. 3-0 Roadrunners as the Cuda do a very poor job getting the puck out of their zone. They haven't had a shot on goal in at least the last ten minutes.

--

4-0 Tucson. Sitting here begging the Cuda to show something. I'd just like to see them get out of the zone cleanly. End of the first. Shots are 15-3.

Cuda take a penalty as the defense loses one of the Roadrunners and Todd hooks him to hold him up. Tucson scores right off the faceoff on the ensuing PP. 5-0.

---

SJ gets a power play on an interference call, the best scoring chance during it comes when John Leonard of the Roadrunners (yes, that John Leonard) causes a turnover and gets a shorthanded breakaway.

Lot of tempers flaring in the third period, as you'd expect. Cuda did add a PPG from Cardwell to make the score a little less ugly, but it finishes 5-1 Roadrunners.

I really cannot express enough how poor of a showing that first period was. Worst start to a game I think we've had all season.

Couple lowlights and Cardwell's goal:

Lines are a little different tonight. MacEachern in for Frisch (who got injured last night).

I have to admit Thrun-Mukhamadullin makes me a little nervous.

Actually, I thought I posted something about the Frisch thing last night, but I guess not. He fought Curtis Douglas with about five minutes to go. Curtis Douglas (listed at 6'9") is like a foot taller than him, and Frisch hasn't fought once before this. Whole thing was over in seconds.

Score is now 3-1 Tucson, Makiniemi is coughing up some big ol rebounds for them to bury.

---

4-1 Tucson at the end of one period, so Tucson scores four on us in the first period on two straight nights. Pathetic.

Our hockey is sloppy once again. Only saving grace right now is the Tucson goalie tonight looks pretty shaky. But, that doesn't really help much if the puck just keeps going in our net.

Going to keep these as "X" links so as not to take up too much space, but here's all four Tucson goals:

Second period starts with Chrona coming in for Makiniemi. He immediately has to make a big save on a John Leonard scoring chance. Cuda just look confused, for some reason.

---

From out of nowhere, Bordeleau scores to cut the lead to 4-2.

And... now Coe on a breakaway! Cuda have just suddenly turned themselves back on. It's 4-3. This game is bizarre.

From the lowlights, it just looks like these guys are doing a really bad job of rotating coverage.

Jesus Christ, can somebody find a way to mute these cowbells? Giving me a legit headache.

4-3 Tucson after two periods, it really does feel like it's back to anyone's game. Updated the above posts with video goal highlights.

Jan Jenik makes it 5-3 Tucson early in the third.

Follow that up with an AWFUL giveaway by Cassels that winds up in our net and it's 6-3. Well, that was some nice optimism while it lasted:

---

Nathan Todd then scores, eleven seconds later, because this game is silly. 6-4.

Gawanke injured on a collision in the middle of the offensive zone. It really did look accidental, but he stayed down for a while and we get a PP out of it.

Cicek scores on the ensuing power play and somehow, it's a one-goal game again.

---

Oh come on. Quick whistle actually just robbed us of a Marek tying goal. Give me a break.

It went to review (and still called no goal), but the referee blew his whistle almost immediately and the puck then continued on into the net without anyone else touching it. That's a horrible miscall.

Tucson adds an empty netter to make it 7-5 and I'm just left with anger in two different directions after this one. That's your final.

Gawanke did not return, by the way, but the Cuda don't play again until Friday, so we'll have to wait til then to see if he's ok. I can't find video of it, but it really was sort of a nothing play. He turned to the right without looking and collided with a Roadrunner he didn't know was there. Pretty much all there was to it.

We got robbed on the game tying goal, but that doesn't forgive another poor start from a Cuda team that didn't look ready to play. Clownshow performance by the officials that followed a joke of a first period from the Cuda.

---

May as well add in a couple of good notes. We had three guys with multi-point games tonight. Mukhamadullin (1G 1A), Thrun and Cardwell (both 2A). Bordeleau only had the one goal, but I'd say he was the forward that looked the most dangerous tonight.

Don't know what the plan is once Knyzhov comes down (I'm guessing he clears). On defense there's the six that played today, then also Frisch and now Knyzhov. Starting to wonder if Guryev and Laroque really are just going to be stuck in the ECHL. Both are playing games for Wichita and were active tonight.

I really do feel like Makiniemi getting pulled after one period was pretty justified. Goals 2 and 3 were just basically rebounds served up on a platter for Tucson. Chrona did have a fairly solid game after that.

Strictly based on plus/minus with a team that is struggling. Is there anything to see with Gawanke or Frisch?

Both have yet to play in an NHL game and Frisch is on an AHL contract.

But with Knyshov being waived thought one of them might get a look.

I think Knyzhov being waived was to make room for Barabanov coming back.

Hell, when Zadina comes back, it’s possible we may not have to play a defenseman on offense!

Well Jan Rutta's still got to come back off of IR, so I think Knyzhov being waived was just making room for him.

Gawanke's pretty good on offense and spotty on defense. It's a shame they didn't give him a look before trading for Addison, because I feel like they're similar players. I'm not that high on him as some because I find his defensive miscues frustrating.

I'm an unabashed fan of Frisch, but I'm not sure he's got NHL upside. He struggled a bit on Friday against a bigger Tucson team. I absolutely think he should be in the Cuda lineup on a regular basis because he works hard, defends well and is probably the best D-man at getting the puck out of our zone, which has been a struggle for us. But, he probably remains an AHL player. Especially this year, since he has about a dozen guys ahead of him.

Missed Rutta and Barabanov in my prior post. Do either, however, figure in the Sharks' future plans?

At 33, Rutta would seem to be a veteran presence who has won championships - much like Marc Steal with the Flyers or Brendan Smith in New Jersey - rather than a long-term option.

In Barabanov's case, do his defensive liabilities make him expendable as the younger Sharks start cracking the lineup?

All the vets are more or less expendable. Barabanov isn't really a defensive liability but wingers are the easiest to replace so if there's a decent market for Barabanov as an expiring contract, the Sharks need to take advantage of that even if it's just a 3rd or 4th round pick.
