2-2, end of the second. Reign score 4 on 4. Didn’t like Thrun’s decision to just skate the puck out of the offensive zone, led to a turnover and Ontario goal.

Cuda are on a PP when we resume.

Idle speculation post from me, but with Bailey now joining the Sharks, I wonder if we're going to get a minor trade soon, shipping out a defenseman for a forward. No secret that the Sharks and Cuda are overstocked on defense, and with all the injuries, the Cuda forward group is now getting to be pretty shallow. We can sign another PTO, but that's not going to replace Bailey's production.

To me, only guy on the roster that makes any sense to move out is Cicek. Expiring ELC, guy left over from the old regime. Got no issue with him this season, but we don't have enough spots on D. Especially with Frisch starting to cement his place a little more, that means Pulli and Guryev are in the press box more often than not. Have no idea what's going on with Laroque, but he hasn't drawn in even once.

Was really anticipating having a more well-stocked lineup, but all the injuries and callups mean the Cuda are currently missing Carpenter, Lindblom, Bailey, and Robins. Could use some reinforcements.

How long will Robins be out?

Laroque was in Wichita, presumably getting back up to game speed. I do not know his immediate status.

NVM, just saw the tweet in the callups thread.

Yeah, Laroque went to the ECHL for a game, but he came back up to the AHL on the 12th. Cuda have had five games since then, and he still hasn't gotten into the lineup (he's now back in ECHL again).

Couldn't tell you if he's still banged up or if he's just not as good as our other options at the moment, I've yet to see him play.

Going 11F/7D, unsurprisingly. Sounds like it's just Sabourin coming back into the lineup in place of Bailey. Brett Kemp is going to be on the second line. I like Brett Kemp, but yeah, that says a lot about our current forward depth too.

Also, Nollenberger mentioned Anthony Vincent's injury, said he would be unavailable for the "coming months." So, maybe cross that name off for a while.

Fingers crossed Coachella's production staff has learned how to operate a camera during the offseason.

Gawanke takes a tripping penalty and Coachella scores on it quickly, 1-0 Coachella.

Was a back and forth game with little going on before that point.

--

Couple failed clears from Bordeleau leads to Gawanke taking another penalty, Makiniemi makes a huge save during it to keep it 1-0. Hopefully we get a better look at that one.

Firebirds are taking a bunch of penalties (some of these calls are actually a little bit questionable) at the end of the second here, and this is the best I've seen our PP look maybe all season. Mostly because we're doing well at keeping it in the zone.

edit: Right after I finish saying that, Todd scores on a 5-on-3 to make it 2-1 Cuda at the end of the second.

Cuda win it, but not without making it a nailbiter at the end first. Firebirds make it 4-3, then Peterson with the empty netter for a 5-3 Cuda win.

Actually the first time we've ever beaten Coachella Valley, in our eleventh game against them.

3 points for Gawanke (1G, 2A) and 2 points each for Todd and Peterson (both 1G 1A), and Bordeleau (2A)

Additional stat from last night, Daniil Gushchin with 8 shots on goal for the night, that's his most in a game this season.

Gushchin is currently second in the AHL in total SOG, with 74 in 16 games (4.6 SOG/G), behind only Sheldon Rempal of Henderson (75 in 19 GP). Second place on the Barracuda? Leon Gawanke, who has 44 SOG. Gushchin throws a LOT of rubber on net.

I am confident Gushchin is going to be an NHL player. Probably not a star - that'd be great, but I think his size is going to keep him from achieving that - but a solid, 25 goal winger who plays 500 games.

Doubt it. Not enough offensive skill to be a top six forward, not good enough at anything else to justify a spot lower down the lineup. He's turning 22 in a couple of months too; only about a year of developmental runway left before the window pretty much closes on him.

IMO Gushchin is similar to Yanni Gourde who didn’t play full-time in the NHL until he was 25. Gush still needs to round out his game, as did Gourde. In terms of goal potential 25 might be too much but I could definitely see him scoring 15-20 goals in the NHL.

Gourde is a very unique case. Typically if a player isn't a full time NHLer by 22-23, especially as a forward, they're unlikely to become anything more than a 4th liner. Gushchin also doesn't have the motor/competitiveness characteristic of Gourde and seemingly a lot of other late bloomers who do end up making it.

I actually think he has quite the motor/competitiveness. I’ve been a fan of his since we first drafted him so I am biased, but I do think he could be on a scoring 3rd line with, say, a Bystedt as his center (or a similarly composed 2nd line). He had great hands, a great shot, good hustle, he’s smart defensively. He needs to use the summer to add a bunch of muscle mass, but I wouldn’t bet against Gushchin — he keeps getting better and he frankly didn’t look too out of place in the NHL.

I'm well aware of the typical development curve. Gushchin definitely has a motor/competitiveness to his game. I've watched most of the Barracuda games since he's played there. By my calculation there have been 30 forwards 5'9" and under in the NHL this season, so I don't think its quite as rare as you think.
