Bordeleau with a nice move to tie it up midway through the third, just waits out the goalie. I guess we like period 3 this weekend.

Sabourin trips someone while awkwardly falling, so it’s unfortunately PK time.

Let's sign this Kemp guy up for some more games, please.

Overtime, Thrun hits the crossbar, we earn a faceoff from it, on the faceoff one of the Eagles' head snaps back. Delayed penalty, they get the extra guy out and score off that. Cuda play pretty well, still find a way to lose.

Final thoughts:

Is it time to get a new AHL coach yet?

I just said this in another thread, but in-season AHL coach firings for performance are very rare. I'm well aware the "Gosh why haven't we gotten rid of McCarthy yet" posts aren't going to go anywhere. Grier was at both of these weekend games, so he's gotten a pretty good look at this team.

I mean all the same, I don't know what you do about some of the ways this team manages to shoot itself in the foot. I cannot find a clip of the turnover leading to goal 2 tonight (surprisingly), but Gawanke skated in front of our goalie, somehow bobbled the puck with zero pressure on him, and then just slipped and fell over. I mean, what do you even say to that? Don't do that next time?

I think people overstate the effect McCarthy has on stuff like discipline (which isn't as big a problem this year) and development. But the stuff that you can directly tie to the coaching staff is going poorly anyway, so it's not like I'm going to stick up for him anytime soon, I mostly just don't bring him up. Our power play is rubbish, our breakout leaves a lot to be desired, and a strong forecheck seems to baffle us.

We've also gone to four overtimes already and lost every single one. There's really only two games this season that you can say we got blown out in. But oh my god am I tired of watching this team find ways to lose games.

Yeah, especially when we were supposed to actually be pretty good this year. I’m just not sure — and I’ve only heard from you guys so maybe one of these days I need to buckle down and watch a few games — but I’m not sure the system is any good, or at least the players don’t or can’t make it work for them. Obviously the Gawanke thing is a goof, but the structural stuff you mentioned is really concerning.

System is less passive than last year, which is at least a plus. On the whole, they're a more watchable team than they were last season, which might even be making the losing more frustrating. A better power play and a better breakout would put us miles ahead of where we are now.

They've got the last place Gulls at home tomorrow night, who are winless in their last eleven games. I'm hoping the Cuda can use that game to get themselves righted a bit.
