Do the Sharks intend to sign Nick Cicek to an NHL contract?
That kid will be a NHL’er in another year or two. No idea why the Sharks haven’t signed him with some of the other “talent” on their rosters. I see a solid two way defenseman with 2nd pairing potential. He reminds me of Justin Braun. Makes the smart little plays. Defensively responsible, and has enough offensive skill to not be a liability in any situation. I suppose as a two way defender I see him as more defensive oriented but definitely has offensive skills. The Sharks need to sign this kid before someone else does.

He's only 21 and putting up decent numbers, so I hope that the Sharks give him a shot. With Pasnichuk being out, the Sharks need AHL defensemen. Probably doesn't help that he's a lefty, though...

Agreed. I have been extremely impressed by him. Excluding Merkley and his unique skill set, I felt like Cicek was the best all around Dman on the Cuda. My caveat is that Ive been tied up with work the last 6 weeks and not as engaged in my Cuda watching. Hobo as always is an excellent resource.

I saw him live when the Cuda came to Colorado at the very end of the preseason. I felt like he was arguably the best player on the ice. Could skate, shoot, pass, hit, stood up for his teammates, all the things you want to see. I also felt his detail work was strong, knew when to pinch, when to drop back, simply made the smart simple plays with very few errors. I don’t see how he doesn’t have a contract. I said it before and will say it again, he will be a regular in the bigs. I felt like on most nights he was the best Cuda Dman. Again, not flashy, just correctly plays his role and was rock solid at doing it.

While I understand that Middleton, Megna, Merks have all looked pretty serviceable with the Sharks, when Megna, Merks, and Cicek have played together on the Cuda, I’ve felt like Cicek was the best out of them - the asterisk being Merks has an out of this world offensive skill set which isn’t comparable to most.

Cicek getting a ELC wouldn't surprise me in the least, I think Jake McGrew said in an interview recently that he thought it was going to happen. It's a shame Cicek's been hurt these last couple of weeks, he could've played a big role with all of the absences we've had due to the taxi squad callups.

I'm also holding my breath on Patrick Holway getting some kind of deal, probably an AHL contract. He's still on a tryout but he's been better than guys we started the season with like Moberg and Onyebuchi and it'd be nice to hold onto a guy that's fit into the squad this well.

Holway has been decent. Definitely better than the two you mentioned. We aren't big fans of Sloberg around our house. We love Onyebuchi, but not because of his hockey skills. We just like to see him punch people in the face. Lol.

3-2 Gulls after two periods in San Diego.

Was not a fan of these new defense pairings. Kniazev-Merkley doesn't make any sense to me, and it resulted in Alt-Holway, which was a mess. Two righties who couldn't gel at all and might have been out there for all three SD goals. Defense has been switched up now to Merkley-Holway and Kniazev-Alt.

Our goals were at least pretty (Weinger and Halbgewachs):

This team looks frustrated and angry.

Blichfeld scored the only goal on the PP, but he was on the fourth line and seemed to be mostly stapled to the bench in this one.

Blichfeld in the five games prior to last night: 1 assist, -9. He's got the worst +/- in the AHL currently at -25. There are three players tied for second-worst in the league (-21), and they're Kniazev, Reedy and Leonard.

Also forgot to mention, Evan Weinger blocked a shot and had to be helped off the ice in last night's game. Which a shame because he was on a five-game point streak, he was one of the only forwards doing positive things lately.

During this 7-game losing streak, the Barracuda haven't held an opponent to under 4 goals in any of them.

5-3 Barracuda in the second intermission. Very strange list of guys who have scored our goals so far: Moberg, Alt, Kniazev, Hatakka, Topping.

Best of the five was Topping's, off a breakaway as he exited the penalty box:

Leonard adds one on the PP to make it 6-4.

Texas then scores twice with their goalie pulled to send this one to OT. Twice.

edit: Barracuda do win in a shootout, Blichfeld scores the only SO goal. Finally a win.
