"I realize now through my own ignorance how my gesture could be interpreted."

What a total non-apology and a bunch of PR bullshit.
I'll never understand why it's so challenging for celebrities/athletes/pr people to just say "I f***ed up. Heres the explanation why i f***ed up, but it isn't an excuse. I'm sorry."

Being real goes such a long way, yet no one does it

It's sufficient expiation for now. He profusely apologizes and owns up to the mistake and doesn't make any excuses.

"I had no inappropriate intent and didn't mean anything racist by it" is kind of an excuse. And it's one that seems to seek mercy on the basis of him painting himself as the dumbest and most ignorant person in northern California.

If you say to someone "I hope you get cancer and die" as a chirp/taunt/asshole insult "in the heat of battle" there's no reasonable expectation that you would know they had a close family member who had cancer and died from it. That's a case of "I didn't mean it that badly" where there's latitude. You don't have any reasonable expectation of knowing the personal family history of everyone you play against. It's still appalling, but it's on the slightly less appalling side of things (for a given level of appalling behavior) and it's sufficient for a "I didn't know, but that's no excuse, I'm sorry I said what I did" apology.

But in this time, in this part of the world, with this current level of scrutiny on race-related conduct, with this amount of notoriety in hockey circles for incidents of racially-insensitive/insulting behavior, with widely documented and discussed incidents of black players having bananas thrown on the ice at them among other things, to claim that making monkey gestures not just at any player but at a guy who was likely the only black player on the ice for Tuscon (I don't know the makeup of their roster), "I didn't know a monkey reference made to a black player could be interpreted that way" is a flimsy, lazy excuse that makes you look dumb, not ignorant. As I said before, Hrabik is not some guy fresh of the plane from Ostrava. He's been in the US since 2018. He has a black teammate on the Barracuda last time I checked. He has had numerous opportunities in various venues to be exposed to the necessary context that illustrates what an incredibly wrong-headed and ignorant thing he just did would be. "I didn't know" is well short of what I'd consider acceptable as mitigating circumstances given those facts.

This is a good post and a fair point.

But...well, I guess to me it's like when someone cuts you off in traffic and you're having a bad day. You pull up next to the driver, and whatever the driver is...that driver is that. Dumb, old, <insert race>, <insert ethnicity>, <insert gender>, etc. Heat of the moment. You young ones have a lifetime of (rightfully) being taught to not think that way, to internally "not go there", to properly socialize yourself. Hrabik...didn't grow up in that culture. He might know the racist tropes behind calling Black Americans monkeys but that's different from knowing it.

I think what Hrabik is trying to say is "I am not a racist; I don't think Black people are inferior. I was just trying to hurt someone, and in the heat of the moment, lashed out."

Put another way...I imagine that if an American player played in western Europe, and made a comment that would be seen as a "Jewish joke" in America, he would be excoriated for being anti-Semitic because of the European history with Jews.

We could say "at least they didn't use papyrus or comic sans" but we're well past the point of just accepting the minimum amount of humanity out of people. Be better.

I thought the ESPN+ thing was garbage, but if they had used comic sans I would’ve absolutely lost my ****.

There used to be this cabinetry place in town that had a rather expensive looking laser-cut, multi-layered steel sign with their name on the facade of their building with the name written in papyrus.

I laughed at it every single time I saw it, but would usually get annoyed afterwards at the idea of someone spending good money and wasting good materials on a fancy sign by using the second worst possible typeface.

I don’t know that your example holds a lot of water, because the principal “the young ones” have been taught to internalize is not “don’t be racists towards black people” it’s “don’t be racist”. If an American player made a “Jewish joke” in Western Europe I’d support whatever fallout came just the same because neither has a place - racism is racism.

The example is crap and the posts from that user very much tells me that they don’t actually give a shit about racism. Hrabik did wrong and made a bad response to it that doesn’t show me any remorse for the situation due to the effort made to minimize what he did.

Kinda annoying that the ECHL guy got his contract terminated and Hrabik is still a Cuda. I can only hope that it's because he has to take the sensitivity training if he's still part of the team and he wouldn't have to do anything if he was terminated immediately.

Wingdings are a special purpose typeface not intended for actual writing. It gets a break. Papyrus is just awful and over-used. The only acceptable place to see Papyrus is in the logo for The Crocodile Hunter because a) it was probably one of the things that spurred the proliferation of the type everywhere else and b) I'm not holding anything against Steve Irwin ever.

The new guy Texeira wasn't half bad either. Maybe we should just keep throwing out PTOs to ECHLers and see how that goes. Might need some new forwards if the Sharks fill the taxi squad for the road trip tomorrow. Onyebuchi also disappeared from the bench at some point during the game and I don't remember seeing him leave.

Ibragimov's first:

Power play went 2 for 4, the PPGs being the Leonard goal in my last post and one from Reedy, who now leads the AHL in power play goals with 10.

McGrew and Blichfeld rounded out the scoring, 5-2 Barracuda final. Bakersfield's goalie was actually Alex Stalock, making his first start since his return.

I just have to say, it was really weird combining Pucks and Paws with Hockey Fights Cancer night. You had the tone switching between "We'd like to honor cancer survivors" and "Look at the cute dogs!" all night.

When I mentioned earlier that the Oilers had a large group of suits/scouts, I'm talking about around 12 guys, by my count. It was enough to raise an eyebrow at. Some of them were nearby and while they were watching the game, they were mostly complaining about the fact they were here and unable to watch Bills-Chiefs. And wow, do those guys swear a lot.

There is a large contingent of Oilers suits in a group at this game (Condors are their affiliate).

Scouting meetings. And in desperate need of. New NHL caliber goalie.

They probably had a dual purpose. First how close is Stalock to NHL play. Second, what assets might be worth trading/calling up to help Oilers make playoffs.
