Think Tank Topic:

How does CBJ pick up the pieces?
I mean it definitely won’t be worse than having Babcock as the actual coach all year.

Management that hired this nut-job knowing full well who he is is still in place and there certainly will be some conversations to have in the locker room but at the end of the day having this manipulative, narcissistic arsehole “leader” who has no idea how to communicate with people circa 2023 out of the way is a good thing.

To think a professional sports team doesn't have lawyers on retainer for situations just like this, and that it would cost them "millions" to go to court over firing Babcock, is absolute stupidity.

They likely paid out a settlement to Babcock to get this to disappear as quickly as possible. It has nothing to do with court costs or paying lawyers.

So who's their new coach? Any leads on that?

so in other words, if this season isn't deemed a success (by whatever metric ownership had in mind) then it's time to flush the toilet and bring in some fresh minds

LOL. How would you like me to post with "conviction"?

Should I bold it?

Every boss I've known has had their "favourites" and those favourites have been treated with favouritism - some slight, some heavy. It's human nature. As an adult, you get over it.

My "favourites" comment had nothing to do with the phones.

My guess : The phone thing is being blown out of proportions / exaggerated. I'll take him at his word that he was just trying to be friendly. I somehow doubt he actually took their phones and went thru them.

Babcock reportedly went through their phones.

Why is that problem?

The quote from Babcock issued by the team says “share, off their phones”.

The 9/12 Athletic article (LINK) says:

“(Bissonnette’s version) couldn’t be anything further from the truth,” Babcock told The Athletic. “They sit in my office, their phone in their hand, and they scroll through.”

Tell me if this is overblown and won’t get someone fired.

1) An emotionally abusive coach who should never work in the NHL again gets an undeserved second chance from Jarmo and JD. Babcock is told to be a good boy and not abuse anyone or cause any controversy.

2) Oh no! Controversy! Biz makes his accusations and Babcock is faced with a dilemma. Saying “yeah, that kinda happened”, and then trying to spin it, would be embarrassing and might jeopardize his job.

3) So he lies to his bosses about what happened and has them help him make a PR push based on his false narrative. He exploits Jenner’s and Gaudreau’s good reputations to also sell this bullshit. It’s a bold strategy Cotten, let’s see if it pays off for him.

4) Babcock had some things in his favor, the vast majority of NHL reporters are water carriers who will drop any negative story after any mild pushback. Unfortunately for him SC still banged the drum and NHLPA actually investigated.

Fair enough.

But, then again, he may have thought to himself, "I'm gonna be me and if the players don't like it, they can fire me and pay me my millions".

Yes, Mike Babcock is a narcissist sociopath who only cares about himself. He doesn’t care that both Jenner’s and Gaudreau’s reputation have taken a hit because he used them as human shields.

This will also presumably get Jarmo and John Davidson fired.

This isn’t exactly an enthusiastic vote of confidence from ownership:
We do not anticipate further changes to our hockey leadership team at this time. Additional disruptions would be detrimental to our players and coaches as they prepare for the opening of training camp in two days.

I’m guessing they had to pay Babcock a good chunk of his 8m to make him go away.

I think we can pretty clearly see that the Babcock the veterans got is way different than the Babcock the rookies got.

I contended that showing pictures of your family and such isnt weird when meeting new people, but its clear now this went wayyy past that with some of the younger guys. Glad to see this get handled and super excited to see what Vincent can do.

Yup, he's scum and the Columbus Blue Jackets are stupid.

I don't think it's millions.
Fair enough. :)

Now being reported that he pulled the same phone stunt with players in Toronto when he was here. Multiple players complained to Dubas, 1 played demanded a trade, which led to him being fired.

You sure he wasn't fired because the Leafs actually sucked ass? They were 9-10-4, on a 6 game losing streak, and some of those losses were quite embarrassing.

All the stuff about Marner etc, only came up after his firing.

It was a combinations of things that got him fired in Toronto. They weren't playing up to expectation and his tactics were not helping the youngsters progress and so he got the axe.

Go listen to what Biz said.

He straight up said "Most people think he was fired for on ice performance but really it was issues with the players."

The dude completely lost the room, people on that team did not want to play for him. Dubas had 2 players request trades on two consecutive days.

They had a designated person on the team to give rookies/new guys heads up that Babs would pull this phone shit so they could be prepared.

But sure, them playing so poorly had nothing to do with what Babcock was doin...

It might've. Funny how we are hearing this stuff 4 years later.
Is it?

The NHL is an old boys club with the doors closed.

This shit was all ready to be pushed under the rug again if it wasn't for Biz and SC (statement from players and team saying everything was fine, same with the NHL). NHL media/journalists are a joke that dont investigate anything and don't want to disturb what the old boys club is up too.

I just find it somewhat hard to believe that none of those trade requests had leaked out any point etc.

Maybe Babcock's shitty behaviour was the reason they were playing so poorly, but the fact that they were 9-10-4 and on a six game losing streak is still the main reason he got fired. Nothing else has been whispered at any point, until now, 4 years later. Yes, we heard about the shitty stuff he pulled on Marner, but at no point was it talked about as a reason for his dismissal.

But if you want to believe his management of people was the reason he got fired, then one has to applaud Dubas, Shanahan, the players, the players agents, all the rest of the coaching staff and organization, everyones family and friends, for keeping this a secret for the last 4 years.

Just because you havent heard about it doesn't mean that others havent....

What does Biz or anyone gain about leaking that a player (possibly Barrie) requested a trade? Would bring nothing but negative attention to probably all parties involved. But now that Babcock likely shot himself in the foot and will never coach in the NHL again people don't care if these stories now get out. And I mean, look at the backlash they received for talking out against Babcock for this current issue. Youre opening yourself up to a lot of shit bringing this kind of stuff to light.

Like people even brought up stories from when he was in Anaheim lmao. Not sure why youre having such a hard time believing this when its coming directly some people that are friends with numerous ex and current NHLers.

Ya, but all that happened before his firing
