Supposedly, he thanked Lou, Rielly and Tanenbaum

Which is a back-handed slap to Shanahan and Dubas...and I'm appalled when he said he came to Toronto because of Tanenbaum...yes, it's so shameful to be the coach of a historic franchise in the Toronto Maple Leafs and get $50 million USD over 8 years doing it...that comment is like sticking a middle finger to the players and fans...disgusting.

It's interesting he singled out Rielly...is he hinting that he wanted Rielly to be captain, but Dubas and Shanahan did not?

Sorry but I have to.

Habs fire their coach and hire Babcock.

Babcock: "There is going to be pain"
Habs fans: "We're already in pain, lots of pain"!!

What I love about tonights game against the devils, the Habs looked deflated....like we did 2 weeks ago.

I can only laugh at them and their arrogant, egotistical fans. They were laughing at the Leafs hard during our skid that led to Babcock being fired. They are not laughing so hard now.

All along we as Leafs fans recognize what a garbage team they had, but they had Price and when he is hot, they are unbeatable. Guess what? Price isn't so hot anymore. Price has exposed their team for the garbage they are. Our 3rd line would be the habs first line.

I hope you and your entire province relocates to South America

The Habs problem is they aren't a very good team. Their fans always want to fire their coach. They have their own 'Keefe' in Ducharme that they should promote.

Except "pain" in French means bread...is he going to be making a lot of money again? :sarcasm:

I don’t care
I wish them , their fans and their entire organization nothing but misery and horrendous play and 10th to last place finishes , just outside the playoffs and just not bad enough to pick high ..
They stink in 2 languages
Adieu

I think we also owe Hiller and Smith apologies to some degree. It’s obvious now that they didn’t really have all that much control over the special teams given how both the PP and PK looked exactly the same as last year had the same problems until Babcock was canned. The PP especially operated completely opposite to how McFarland had it running in Florida last year.

Hiller now has the Islanders power play ranked 19th, up from 29th last year, still not great and it’s been an issue for the Islanders, but it’s something. Ottawa’s penalty kill is ranked 11th so far under Smith, up from 23rd last year.

What Babcock did to Modanno though, disgusting.
Wow I just looked into this...not just an awful coach this guy is a awful awful human being. He litreally thinks he is bigger than the game itself. Apparently he healthy scratched Modano for the last 5 games of the szn so he wont hit 1,500 games played. He retired with 1,499 games played since he signed a one year contract as a 40 year old. This guy is an utter egotistical scumbag.

He healthy scratched Spezza in the season opener this year against his former team Senataors too, Spezz got 40 tickets for his friends and family only to be healthy scratched. How can anyone like this guy? Not just an overated awful outdated coach, but a trash human being as well.

he won 105 points just like a year ago. That's pretty quick to be outdated, hopefully the new guy lasts a few more seasons before he's outdated too.

It's pretty funny that anyone defends Babcock at this point. After just three games of Keefe, it's completely obvious that Babcock was the wrong coach for this team at this time. Even if you still somehow like the guy.

Just wait another year or two, or heck, probably enough to wait until the first round playoff series against Boston in 2020 and it will be completely obvious to most Leafs fans that Keefe is the wrong coach.

If you think any of the old school Canadian coaches were much different than Babcock, you have been living in a bubble. I'm not endorsing their methods, but if there was a social media culture in the 90's, you'd hear some interesting stories about Scotty Bowman & co and you don't even have to go that far, Randy Carlyle and others are more recent examples. So let's not act like Babcock is some isolated nutcase, his methods are mostly a reflection of his time.

Yeah, tons of coaches have embraced two techniques which are evident. One is getting the team united in their hatred for the coach in the hope that it motivates them to prove him wrong. The other is to make people insecure about their place in the pecking order in the team, in hopes that it motivates them to improve. These may be outdated techniques, but there is clearly a long history with them in coaching.

For all his faults, Babs also rarely sewered players publically.

It was clearly time for him to go, and hopefully, it works. He and Dubas clearly did not agree on the construction of a team that they believed could win the cup. We will see in the coming years if Dubas's gamble of heavily emphasizing skill while somewhat ignoring grinders and finding a coach who believes in that philosophy was the correct gamble. Hopefully, for us Leafs fans he turns out to be right. Shanahan probably should have realized this was going to be dysfunctional when he replaced Lou, and it seemed to have lacked foresight, but my guess is they didn't have the necessary political capital to remove Lou and Babs in the same off-season.

Babcock would never admit he was wrong. Even if the Leafs go on a huge tear and win a round or 2 in the playoffs, Babcock would say that he would do nothing different if he was still coach and that he always bets on himself. I don't know why would anyone hire him right now. His shelf life is a year or 2 max.

I think you make excellent points on our new style and its effectiveness. I always found that dumping the puck in and chasing it was the equivalent of fumbling the ball at the 5 yard line and hoping to recover it in the end zone. It just made zero sense to me. If we had big bangers and crashers that would paste the D into the boards...then it would be effective..but not with our team.

Babcock didn't want them to band and crash. He wanted them to dump the puck and then win the footrace to the puck. For one, teams were defending the blueline by standing there as a wall. The player would be coming to the zone with speed.

Chipping the puck past them, you should already be past the D by the time they get to turn around, and you have the puck and can feed the point to get set up or hopefully another team has made their way to in front of the net.

Imo hard to ignore Tanenbaum's shadow during this offseason
