Imo hard to ignore Tanenbaum's shadow during this offseason
Tanenbaum is an empty figurehead at this point. Cope and Natale have full control because Bell and Rogers agreed during the purchase they had to vote together on all board issues so Tanenbaum couldn’t play them against each other and control everything due to being the swing vote.

Yeah, tons of coaches have embraced two techniques which are evident. One is getting the team united in their hatred for the coach in the hope that it motivates them to prove him wrong. The other is to make people insecure about their place in the pecking order in the team, in hopes that it motivates them to improve. These may be outdated techniques, but they is clearly a long history with them in coaching.

For all his faults, Babs also rarely sewered players publically.

It was clearly time for him to go, and hopefully, it works. He and Dubas clearly did not agree on the construction of a team that they believed could win the cup. We will see in the coming years if Dubas's gamble of heavily emphasizing skill while somewhat ignoring grinders and finding a coach who believes in that philosophy was the correct gamble. Hopefully, for us Leafs fans he turns out to be right. Shanahan probably should have realized this was going to be dysfunctional when he replaced Lou, and it seemed to have lacked foresight, but my guess is they didn't have the necessary political capital to remove Lou and Babs in the same off-season.

This might be the best summary I've seen on the topic. Well put.

So far, and I know it is extremely early, they won one game on a adrenaline, Freddie stole a game where they only played one period and then they shelled a doormat. With the Sabres game today I am not seeing a huge turnaround yet. They are still basically playing sloppy, inconsistent hockey like they did under Babs which is still on the players. Leafs backup goalies really owe the club a decent f#ing start, this is beyond pathetic.

I know Marner back will change things but they are hardly a depleted lineup and have the danglers to absorb his absence, at least short term. Dubas has not made a good call on a goalie yet, so maybe he needs some help in that area. Seriously, no sarcasm. I see the logic in the moves he has made (or hasn't) but since none have worked out, what's the next step? I thought it was probably time for Babs to go since the team was in quicksand and KD had apparently decided no adjustments, but there is little sign so far the coaching change has been the the silver bullet. The scorers are happier but nobody wants to play defense.

I won't pile on Keefe because I have always put the bulk of the responsibility for losing on the players, so maybe a few more games drives a new message through. So I will pile on Dubas a bit more. Four games under a new coach and two pretty weak efforts. "Oh the coach has lost the room". Get them a damn backup, do your job! Louis f#ing Domingue, how hard is that? I actually like this lineup a lot but some players maybe have to be moved to address some gaps, including the cap squeeze. If Keefe is seriously your guy, then go out there and get him whatever the f*** he asks for.

Crazy thing for me is that this man did what he did and hes a spokes person for mental health, one of his passions and then we hear about the attitudes he had in the dressing room with our young players.

You know. I’m watching Mighty Ducks 2 and I’m thinking Babcock could have learned the same lessons as Bombay.

happy Keefe came in, but...

We have played 2 great games, 1 decent game, 1 below average game, and 1 bad game. Your just complaining for no reason.

Wouldn't be surprised to see some Marlies players come up soon. Guys will go through the wall to play for the guy that took them in as a nobody and turned them into someone making NHL paychecks.

Wow I just looked into this...not just an awful coach this guy is a awful awful human being. He litreally thinks he is bigger than the game itself. Apparently he healthy scratched Modano for the last 5 games of the szn so he wont hit 1,500 games played. He retired with 1,499 games played since he signed a one year contract as a 40 year old. This guy is an utter egotistical *******.

He healthy scratched Spezza in the season opener this year against his former team Senataors too, Spezz got 40 tickets for his friends and family only to be healthy scratched. How can anyone like this guy? Not just an overated awful outdated coach, but a trash human being as well.
I just read about it and a poster had commented that Spezza had bought 30 tickets for family and friends when Babcock scratched him. I would never forgive him if he did that to me!!!

I am thinking Keefe just needs to see a bit more action from the current lineup and they will make some moves. He needs to know what he has and who he maybe can and can't rely on. I'm looking forward to the next move.

I guess the Coach needs to get a waiver signed in the future to ensure players are all medically cleared to face criticism - Ooooo He raised his voice to him on the bench ...Sorry that Franzen had some issues , but to lay this on a Coach for being tough on a player is absolutely ridiculous.

What is the future of Coaching - "Umm player x .. are you okay if I try to show you something different in what you are doing .. Is that okay .. hope you dont mind ..."

Don't be ridiculous.

Our society has changed but hockey culture for whatever reason, has been somewhat stuck in the past for a long time now. As of today, hockey is maybe a couple of decades behind and that needs to be fixed, period. Criticism is fine, always has been and always will be. Abuse however (both physical and mental) is a different story and I for one am glad that hockey is finally cleaning up it's act.

True, there are way more victims today than a couple of decades ago, without question.

The future of all jobs should be where a person is treated ethically and fairly, without abuse or harassment. If a coach can't do their job without being abusive, then they shouldn't be a coach.

Having authority over others doesn't mean either 1) asserting it over others to their detriment or 2) being impotently passive. Getting rid of one doesn't mean automatically becoming the other.

Franzen is interviewed in swedish media today saying Babcock is the worst person he ever met. Verbal abusing and mocking even arena staff. Mocking people for no reason. Some quotes:
"he is a horrible human being. The worst person ive ever met"
"i was scared to death to go to the arena"
"he makes his players scared to death of making misstakes and his teams rarely makes it through the first round of the playoffs"

Sounds like the guy knows his stuff.:laugh:

I remember 2 months ago when I started that Commodore thread, at least 80% of the folks in here defended Babcock and trashed Commodore.
This was before the Marner stuff.
