For everyone pissing about the "We have no money".... you are all ignoring the elephant in the room.

Come May 19th if TED passes Meruelo has a $40 million payment he has to make up front before he can put one shovel into the ground. That $40 million is not refundable. Then spend another $600-800 million over the following 4 years to get a new arena built.

That is the single most important thing right now for the future of the franchise so if it means he has to keep tight reins on the budget for while so be it.
Nice spin. AM and company were were saying the revenues are higher playing at the dink rink than GRA. Now they can't afford to take back a couple million to make the team better in a couple of years, keeping the players happy and giving the fans hope.

Although I've got to say

Ottawa 1st, 2nd, 2nd >>>>> 1st, Spence, 2nd
True.

Not sure why some of you are freaking out. The gamble he took on getting a top 10/15 pick is totally worth giving up a couple picks in the late 20's. Forget the money retention stuff. The difference between those late 20's and 2nd round picks we got instead isn't huge compared to that OTT first. Well worth the gamble especially when you look at OTT's odds to make the playoff's and win the lottery. I like our chances of getting that pick even with the fact that we're the Coyotes and our odds at everything hocky blow.
True.

I’d say the difference between the ask and the return is due to Chychrun’s history of injuries. I’m content and I’m hoping Michkov drops to that 2 nd pick.
No, it was about taking a contract back with the ask. I believe the ask was there, IF we took back money.

Yes. I was missing the elephant in the room. And this is very helpful. Thank you.

I might have graded that too harshly, because most of us were contemplating 1st/Spence/2nd or 1st/Kaliyev/2nd or something around that and this is much better than that. I think we all got illusions of grandeur when we saw some of the deals...I know I did!

Where is everyone coming up with the picks in the late 20's? Sure teams offered that, but BA didn't want that and I wouldn't either. I was hoping that Chych would go to the Sabres, Columbus, Ottawa or another non playoff team so we could get a pick in the teens, AND another first or equal prospect and stuff. At no time did I think ONE first would be enough.

You're not wrong, the difference is that BA kept saying that his minimum was two 1st, 2nd equivalent and we took less, which is why most are unhappy with the deal, especially with other deals for Ekholm, Jeannot and others
I would like to think AM had BA's hands tied, because if he didn't this return stinks.

Not sure if you all have seen recent comments by Bill. First part of his interview is very telling about taking on contracts in this trade and next year. Armstrong media availability

TLDR High pick valued and did not want salary, plan is to take on more bad contracts next year,
You will take money back next year, but not this year for a better return. That is short sighted and stupid and I think he is trying to cover AM's ass. BA looked pretty beat up there. Not to long ago he was smiling and bragging how he was going to use the cap space to his advantage in trades.

The key was a high first round pick in THIS draft. He wasn't getting that from anyone else. The "experts" are saying this draft is loaded with talent. I guess we'll see or hopefully we will.

Now he needs to dump whoever else to make sure they lose a bunch the rest of the way. I know a lot of you don't like to hear it but they've taken the tank this far, they need to finish the damn thing off.

Don't let that make you feel better. They are totally different. The money and investors for TED is separate from the Coyotes. IF AM can't afford a couple of million to make a better trade to make his team better in a couple of years we have the wrong owner. No wonder BA is telling everyone a rebuild is 8 yrs. His hands will be tied for the next three years. Buckle up boys. Nice knowing ya Schmaltz. Sorry to see you go Keller. Have to give AT and the boys credit, they played their hearts out this year. Chych was smart and I bet he will sleep well tonight. I bet Keller will be having nightmares.

We have no idea what all was offered. They were deep in talks with Edmonton until money came up. The pick is one thing, but what else was offered in a deal that we couldn't make because of BA's hands being tied.

I don't mind Ottawa as a team either. Had Chychrun gone to Toronto for example I would have had to hate him, somehow.

I officially need a new handle. Big f***ing Guenther? BFGuenther? Lay down the Lawson? Lawson CrOuch?

Coyote Trickster God Apostle is another winner.
Fortnight?

I guess we'll see in 3 years whether BA got fleeced or not. Much depends upon how good the scouting is compared to the teams above them in the draft.

Thanks for the share.

Love this quip:

Some reporter - Why do this deal today instead of waiting til the last moment?
Armstrong - We wanted to wreck the trade deadline shows up in Toronto.

I have been saying all along that Chych is not worth anything close to what BA has been asking for in the last 18 months, I was right, dead right. BAs ask did not change, even after Chych came back and killed if on offense this year. You would have thought his great offensive out put would have increased his vale but it didn't. His poor D play hurt the return, most of you didn't want to see that either. RT and Jakey, I guess I wasn't stupid after all:)

I knew something was wrong when this continued to drag on the last few weeks. BA way over played his hand, just like I thought.

Last note, the return doesn't surprise me, we got market value, that is set by buyers, not the seller.

The ask was 2x1sts and a 2nd. We ended up with 1x1st and 2x2nds. The 1st we are getting is likely a top 10-15 pick in a relatively strong draft (the drop off is around 20) instead of what i was anticipating to be a pick in that 24-32 range.
The ask was 2 1sts and a good prospect, we didn't get close to that.

For those on the ledge... jump....it's a short fall... you'll be fine. Then come back....jump again if needed. Then come back. There's a chance eventually you'll not be interested in the ledge....and I might need the ledge some day down the road.

I'm surprised the refusal to take salary back is upsetting people. They're on record....

The Coyotes not taking salary back doesn't surprise me, we all knew this. BA knew this and knew how trades work. BA thought he would get 2 firsts and a good prospect and take back zero salary while not retaining any salary. Its stunning BA would think that could work in a cap world.

Wild to hear him talking about using cap space to take on bad contracts for draft capital. Yet wouldn’t retain at all?

He calls out Zaitsev by name as a guy who’s moving out rekindled things with Dorion. Well…why didn’t we want THAT draft capital in combination with the Chychrun trade? I really don’t get it.

And then Ghost. Would retention really not impact the return? Like really? Hmmm…

It was nice to hear him talking about not taking back money as a strategy rather than a handicap. I’m just not sure I believe him.

Was also interesting to hear him be very open about his preference for picks over prospects.

Dreger said the ask from Ottawa last week was 2 firsts and either Greig or Sogaard. Apparently Dorian called Bill's bluff, doubt many here will agree with that assertion though. I do think he had to make a trade after sitting Chychrun for 2 weeks though, another mistake imo.

Maybe this was the best deal. I still don't think it was a bad deal for a guy that wants out especially if that pick is a top 15 pick in this draft. We'll have to wait and see to know for sure. Yeah Chychrun was a young stud Dman that we drafted. Sucks but the fact is he didn't want to be here and he was injury prone. Throw those two factors in and it was a good return with the potential to be an outstanding return if the picks pan out.
