I’m honestly ok with the haul. I know it’s anti climatic and we still have to wait to even see what we get. BA clearly wanted the best pick available and he’s gambling but the reward could be high. Something tells me we pick 3 times in the first again this year.

Dreger said the ask from Ottawa last week was 2 firsts and either Greig or Sogaard. Apparently Dorian called Bill's bluff, doubt many here will agree with that assertion though. I do think he had to make a trade after sitting Chychrun for 2 weeks though, another mistake imo.
30 teams called his over played bluff.

I have been saying all along that Chych is not worth anything close to what BA has been asking for in the last 18 months, I was right, dead right. BAs ask did not change, even after Chych came back and killed if on offense this year. You would have thought his great offensive out put would have increased his vale but it didn't. His poor D play hurt the return, most of you didn't want to see that either. RT and Jakey, I guess I wasn't stupid after all:)

I knew something was wrong when this continued to drag on the last few weeks. BA way over played his hand, just like I thought.

Last note, the return doesn't surprise me, we got market value, that is set by buyers, not the seller.

The ask was 2 1sts and a good prospect, we didn't get close to that.
How many times have we heard Morgan say the ask was 2x1st and a 2nd or prospect equivalent?

Rt has pointed out several times therange where those 2x1sts would have been. Morgan confirmed that as well.

BA chose to grab the package with the best first in a very interesting draft. Time will tell if this was the right move. If he had grabbed 2later 1sts and wanted to trade into that 10-15 area it would have required draft capital. That was a late 1st and 2nds last year. Factor that into the “return” and i get it. Am I disappointed ? At first a little. But now i get to expand my draft list to about 15 names. That’s good for me. I watch a ton of draft prospects.

I don't mind Ottawa as a team either. Had Chychrun gone to Toronto for example I would have had to hate him, somehow.
I'm really happy for Chych. Ottawa is an up and coming team. Chych knew it was a lost cause with the Coyotes. It hurts like hell to lose a home grown, great talent like him. I just wonder what Schmaltz, Keller and Crouse are thinking right now. I know they say all the right things, but deep down their guts must be churning.

I think they will try to move them both at some point. Nobody can take those cap hits today.

Thanks for the share.

Love this quip:

Some reporter - Why do this deal today instead of waiting til the last moment?
Armstrong - We wanted to wreck the trade deadline shows up in Toronto.
Trying to be a smart ass, after being taken to the cleaners. He looked beat up and tired on that clip. Our biggest trading chip and he screwed it up.

I’m glad it wasn’t LA.

Crouse knew how Chychrun felt when he signed his extension over the summer.

I think Chych was definitely worth the ask, but all the GM's probably knew he couldn't take money back and had his hands tied by AM and that is why the offers were not there. That's my opinion, have no idea if I'm right, but this deal sucks big time.

Gee, thanks Craig, good job helping BA with some CYA:)

On a positive note Washington won and passed Ottawa in standings yesterday. Ott sits w 11th pick now.
This pick might turn out to be a fantastic player, or not, but the concern for me is I wanted something else in case this player does not turn out. I would shit if Ottawa ends up 11th and wins the lottery. Our rebuild will be 12 yrs.

The Coyotes not taking salary back doesn't surprise me, we all knew this. BA knew this and knew how trades work. BA thought he would get 2 firsts and a good prospect and take back zero salary while not retaining any salary. Its stunning BA would think that could work in a cap world.
He was bragging how he is going to use the cap to his advantage for trades. IF his hands were tied by AM and company I guess this kind of deal would be expected, but if they weren't he got taken to the cleaners.

I wanted a deal I didn’t have to rationalize. We got 3 assets one of which is prime. I’m not gonna stress about the 1% chance that ottawa wins a lottery.

I think anyone in the know knew BA couldn't take money back, so why offer the moon. I think the ask was reasonable, or close to reasonable, but this. BA said this would be the last BIG asset he would trade. I think I will call his bluff right now. I agree about sitting Chych. Hell BA said he would keep Chych if he didn't get the ask. What happened? AM happened is what happened. After three years the tear down is still not complete.

How do you know it's prime? We don't even know who the hell it is. But that isn't the point, it's what kind of package he got back for arguably your best player.

Ottawa is having ownership and arena issues, so I wouldn't really say that Chychrun has improved his circumstances all that much.

My thought is that BA wanted to keep that retaining slot open in case he got a deal for Schmaltz (no way in hell he can deal Schmaltz without retention... that contract is just awful). If that's not the case, then Armstrong was in a game of chicken and Meruelo panicked and grabbed the wheel early.

At this point I'm just glad it's over with.

He rolled the dice on it being a top 15 pick and there are very favorable odds of it landing there. I like that gamble. Between that and trading him for a couple picks we know would be in the 20s or even not a '23 1st at all, I take this deal no question.

Maybe this was the best deal. I still don't think it was a bad deal for a guy that wants out especially if that pick is a top 15 pick in this draft. We'll have to wait and see to know for sure. Yeah Chychrun was a young stud Dman that we drafted. Sucks but the fact is he didn't want to be here and he was injury prone. Throw those two factors in and it was a good return with the potential to be an outstanding return if the picks pan out.
Why do you think Chych wanted out? Chych's dad works for the Panthers and I bet they knew damn well how deep the problems were/are with the Coyotes. I can just hear it now that BA approached Keller and Keller has decided to move on, so we will try and move him. The players talk, they know how short careers are. The only players we can keep are salary dumps and young drafted kids with no leverage. It is what it is. Time to move on. What time do the Avs play tonight?:)

Ottawa will have a new owner shortly. Look at Ottawa and what they have for talent, and you think Chych's circumstances didn't improve much? Who is talking about retaining, it's about taking money back. There was no need to retain on Chych's contract. I'm really happy for Chych and Ottawa. Well done Ottawa.

About that Chychrun wanting out?

Bill dropped his ask and imo its was the right play. I think it would have been really bad to keep Chychrun after sitting him for weeks and trying to trade him for over a year. The market had spoken.

Not taking money back on Chychrun increases the flexibility of Armstrong's trade position on Schmaltz. Period. Whether it's retention or real dollars coming back, Schmaltz's contract will need a shit-ton of sweeteners to offload.

That, or we really are a poverty franchise who is easily bent over a barrel whenever anyone with a spine confronts us.

You might understand, therefore, why I prefer to think about the former.

Keep on telling your self that. ONE top 15 pick is nice, but there had to be more for a player like Chych. I'm sure you know that Ottawa was the last straw. BA blew it with LA and Edmonton, and probably more teams because he wouldn't or couldn't take money back. Whatever, it's done, it is what it is. Same old hope and a prayer. Rinse and repeat.
