Optimism is fine but here's a little perspective:

This is the current top 5 in PPG in the OHL:

1fa2iQD.png

All of them are 2023 picks.

#1: Cowan 28th (Leafs)
#2: Musty 26th (Sharks)
#3 Dvorsky 10th (Blues)
#4: Ritchie 27th (Avs)
#5: Rehkoph 50th (Kraken)

They are all the same age so this tells us that what Ritchie is doing is good but not exceptional or uncommon.

Context is a big part of this. Cowan plays on a team with significantly more weapons and help (they have 5+ PPG+ players), Dvorsky and Musty play on the same team and also have Goyette who is actually leading the team in points to help them. Ritchie’s team was middling before he started to takeover.

Not to say the others aren’t having great seasons, but Ritchie very much is the straw that stirs the drink for the Generals.

That and factor in the power play. Cowan has 19 power play assists, Musty has 15, Ritchie has 7. He only has 11 power play points in total. Ritchie doesn’t have to look like Bedard in the OHL but being one of the best players in the league is just about what you can ask for. The greatest factor on that translating to the NHL will be how the Avs plan to handle him.

I know something has to give with our 2C situation but I'm really hoping we get to keep this kid.

I do worry though that if the Avs keep him, there is a potential for his development to get rushed ala Jost.

The Avs got 300+ games out of Jost. He could also be treated like Olausson and expected to put in his 150 AHL games before getting taken seriously.

They're going to rush his development for sure. They always do.

But, if he's actually good he'll figure it out.

I don't think development was the problem with Jost. He just is the player he is.

I don't think an extra year at North Dakota, or playing his first pro season in the AHL, would have turned him into a different player.

IMO Jost's problems were pretty clear early on. I mentioned before he even played for the Avs that he needed to improve the explosiveness in his first couple steps to give him seperation to make plays, and even though he did improve on it after the draft, the league got faster and faster every year, and he played on the Avs who rely on speed the most and also got faster and faster each year. So it negated those gains he made and left him with the same issue.

Every prospect is different. I know you weren't doing this, but we shouldn't compare every prospect to Jost or Newhook just because they're prospects. Ritchie is also 6'2", which will help his skill game translate to the pro level in ways that Jost and Newhook couldn't.

I don't think rushed development can really ruin someone. If the talent is there it will win out eventually. Jost just isn't very good.

I don't believe that. Just look at what Montreal is doing with their #1 pick Slaf. Total disaster. You can destroy a kid mentally. They might recover or not.

They should have left Slaf in Finland for one season, then step to AHL or NHL. He wasn't near ready for the spotlight.

Total mishandling of a player. If they don't bust out completely, it will definitely slow down their development. For more fringe player might be a death sentence.

Is Slaf talented enough to be a franchise/high end level player? I don't think so. Same thing with Laf.

I mean look at Hughes. He joined the league arguably too soon and had a couple seasons where everyone thought he was going to be a bust, but look at him now.

It's not showing the the scoresheet yet but he's been their best player for the last 2-3 months. He's actually driving his line from the wing at age 19. He'll be fine.

Calum Ritchie has been lightning hot since returning from injury with 41 points in 25 games, proving why he was selected in the first round despite many ranking him lower.

I know he was injured but didn't know he was a reach at #27.
MPJ, Bol Bol, Baron and Ritchie. KSE is all about gambling on injured prospects in the draft.

He was drafted #1 mostly because Rantanen I think. TPS connection. Otherwise his numbers didn't warrant a #1 pick I think.

Even if something pans out, doesn't make it the right decision.

If they decide to keep him (and they should) the Avs will have no choice to get Ritchie on the team next year because he is too young to go the AHL. If they don't he will need to go back to the OHL where it will be a waste of development IMO. Get him on the team as the 3C or on the W until he gets used to NHL speed then give him the 2C.
