Prospect Info: Avs draft F Calum Ritchie (2023 #27 overall)

He needs a contract first to get 9 games, which I’m skeptical he’s getting one this spring, the Avs love to withhold contracts to make the players earn them. They don’t give CHL prospects trials anyway though.

Yes he can play in the AHL this spring, we’ll see if they do that. He can’t play in the AHL next year because he’s contractually obligated to the CHL, he’s not going to go to Europe either for that reason. I would not want him going to the AHL a season early though, that benefits nobody.

It definitely benefits the Avs and could benefit Ritchie. Getting some AHL games in could give the Avs an idea of how ready he is physically and otherwise to play pro against men. Just like they did with Malinski last year.

And it would benefit Ritchie if he plays well, which might let the Avs hold off on an off season 2C trade until after they try him for 9 games next year. Which he could then have a chance to earn around $1M or so that he might not get without seeing him in the AHL first.

If the Avs keep Ritchie, it would be a big benefit to have him play well at 2C on a cheap ELC. If Landeskog comes back next year, Ritchie at 2C would help them keep important players they'd have to give up for cap reasons. That's a big benefit for the Avs and the $1M is a pretty big benefit for Ritchie.

Now 3rd in PPG in the OHL behind the Sharks guy and the Leafs guy:

Can someone help me understand why we sent undrafted Saige Weinstein back to the WHL with an ELC but not Ritchie? Those contracts both would’ve slid right? So not like it’s for financial purposes. I know he was hurt at the time so we didn’t have a good viewing of him but is that the only reason why? Better sign him soon to reward this type of performance.

Counts against our total contract limit if I’m not mistaken. An undrafted player we would not have any rights to, but a drafted player is under our umbrella for 4-6(?) years before they hit the open market.

In other words it allows for more flexibility in not crossing over the max contract threshold. With Ritchie being drafted and not expected to play in the NHL this season there was no rush in getting him a contract, especially considering he was hurt all off-season.

The better question is why hasn’t Ivan Ivan received an ELC.

Pretty sure CHL players you only maintain rights for 2 years and then they re-enter the draft if you don’t sign them. It’s only the college and European league players where you keep their rights for 4+ years

The Avs only had a small window to sign Weinstein. They have 2 years for Ritchie. The contract number isn’t a big deal when they slide. They basically don’t count to the 50 limit except in specific instances.

Right, after which we have them for longer. We would get a first round pick if we don’t sign him though :naughty:

Thats why I was a little confused cause I didn’t think either would count against the 50 max limit if they were both signed. Hopefully the sign him soon. In years past, I remember they did announce some ELC signings around the TDL, so maybe it’s coming.

Side note; there’s quite a few guys who could end up with ELC’s by the years end. Ritchie, Behrens, Hanzel, Ivan all come to mind.

I think it is March 1 they can sign directly for next season. I’d expect an announcement or two. Then Behrens in the Aprilish range (if he’s still here)
