He was only a C in the 1st period tonight, a period the Avs total dominated. Then for some dumb reason to start the 2nd, Bednar moves him to LW with Mack and Nuke, and shuffles all the lines, and they weren't near as good the rest of the game.

My thing with Nelson right now is he was alway a shoot 1st player, but seems to look to pass every time the puck is on his stick. Even his great look had him trying to pass at 1st. Just needs to drive the net and shoot.

So that’s on him and not the system. Maybe he didn’t want to be traded. Played his entire career with the Isles and wanted to stay there

Fact is Bednar never got anything out of his 2C's in the NHL outside of one good year of Kadri.

Perhaps he should stop panicking and start helping them differently so they can succeed at center. CMac isn't going to be able to bring him a new guy every single year.

I mean yes and no. CMac spent a lot of assets trading for players. Nelson is arguably the most important player we brought in and he hasn’t done much so far. With not many games left in the season, I can see why Bednar is trying different things to get Nelson going.

This seems like a confidence thing with Nelson more than anything. I mean he gets the puck and doesn’t do anything with it. It’s not a system issue. He should be able to make plays, he has a really good shot and hasn’t done any of it

That’s just not true. Kadri paced 50-60 points in his 1st two years with the Avs then had the big breakout year in the cup season, and if he stayed, there is no reason why he wouldn’t continue to produce at high level with us

Yeah, I haven't liked LOC's game in a while. I know hip surgery is hard to come back from but he looks slower than usual out there.

Give him some time off if he needs it.

Seemed like a confidence think with Mitts as well.

All I'm saying is that Bednar has been given a shitload of players to try at 2C...none of them work. And that's because I believe he coaches that line to play like MacK's and the fact is... there is only one Nathan MacKinnon in the leauge. You can't possibly expect another line to play that way. Especially without Cale on D. There has to be a different system line to line and I'm not seeing that here.

People gotta get Kadri out of their heads. That 2022 season Kadri played like a top line center. That is rare to find. You only get that on teams with two superstars down the middle like Edmonton.

Just look at 2nd line centers around the league. The high-end ones are pacing ~65 points, the good ones ~55 and the mediocre ones ~40-45. Nelson is currently pacing 55.

Nelson just needs to be given time to get used to the system and new linemates.

Yeah so Bednar has actually gotten something from the 2Cs. JTC is not even a 2C and Bednar got 52 points out of him. It’s just super hard to find the right guy with consistency. This is why, and I’ll say it again, CMac’s biggest mistake ever and perhaps the downfall of the Avs is not re-signing Kadri. He was the right guy for us. He should have been the long term solution for 2C

Then why is Bednar playing him on the wing? Maybe the issue with the 2C position isn't the players.
