This league is a joke. It has never protected It's stars . The officiating is biased and the flagrant penalties are not adjudicated properly. In what world can an opposing player take several cross checks with all their might against a player that has position and legal stake to that position? Then give penalties for tapping a players stick out of his hands or tapping his hands. The former is a penalty all day long (cross checking, interference) whatever. AM didn't have the puck therefore should not have been violated.
Where were our heavy weights to lay out retribution. If it happened to Gretz there would have been a brawl. Same old same old here. Ugh
Remember in the overtime win against Montreal Morgan Rielly got a high stick in his face from Shea Weber and was bleeding, however the refs did not give him a 4:00 penalty for that.

Look at this picture of him celebrating the goal with Tavares and you will see the blood on his nose.

Yes I noticed it when it occurred. We won't get the benefit of the doubt. Time to take things into our own hands. Play more in your face hockey. This pond hockey is painful to watch......so boring.

While scuks that he's missing a game, given that its a shortened season id rather be cautious and have him return when he's 100% rather than at say 80% and risk worsening an injury

Remembering all the early injuries and people were afraid he could be fragile. Certainly not hoping so but did seem a bit down last game.

Did Matthews insinuate there was no game plan? Is there video or link of him saying that?

***Edit i read the entire comments and nothing comes off like this clown in the link spins it. I think the link should be removed actually.
There should be a rule that links should only come from legit sites like TSN and Sportsnet or those on Twitter like Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun or Elliotte Friedman who are verified, instead of garbage websites like that.

It is a blatant negative spin. Nothing concrete says there is controversy. Completely spun like that. Furthermore, if Matthews wants to chirp how they played and thats his style, I’m all for natural character coming out. Thats leadership and constructive criticism unless you start dropping names. They can all call out team play. I’m all for it and Keefe is too.

I guess in some ways it's better than the standard cliché answers players give during interviews.

i thought it was interesting how the toronto media of all places downplayed what Matthews said about the game prep lol they made it seem insightful instead of critical. interesting how protected he's become, if engvall said that they would have made it about the coach. i hope Matthews lives up to that privilege of being untouchable.

Considering it felt like the Leafs fell into the matchup game against a pretty weak Oilers team, it would appear they psyched themselves out into playing an uncharacteristic game. So the comment was fair because anyone watching the game felt the same. Plus he's a new age athlete who freely speaks his mind so it's not like you have a guy who robotically tows the company line who suddenly committed mutiny.

I don't think he's injury prone as opposed to being a big target for guys to take big cuts and cheap shots at.

He personally needs to play a little more nasty and aggressive to keep the wolves at bay. A 6'3" guy should take his pound of flesh from anyone trying to target him.

The Leafs need also to do a little better job protecting him. He needs a teammate who will deliver the message to teams that if Matthews or Marner are unduly abused on the ice, we will not hesitate to send your bright shining star player to the IR.

I thought Matthews had started to play more of a nasty and aggressive game prior to this season.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a game against Montreal in the 2018-19 Season when he took down Shea Weber and was roughing him up in the corner?

That's a perfect example of the kind of compete level Matthews should bring to a game. The Shea Weber sequence really showed us what a bull he could be when provoked. I'm also envisioning when Nathan Mackinnon took it upon himself to fight last year in the playoffs.

I just imagine him throwing all of that hostility towards a smaller defenseman on a routine play once or twice a game and the kind of space and respect he can build for himself. To his credit, I think he's incorporating hitting into his game much more this year, but it's still probably not a natural instinct for him.

It would be great if Matthews can make hits like this against the boards, get the puck because of it and end up scoring a goal.

That's a standard shift. I think he should be invoking a Mackinnon like level of hostility:

"Standing up for Rantanen":

"If you even think about taking a run at me, you're going down with an elbow."

Expecting Matthews to start playing with a mean-streak and going head-hunting is like asking Bogo to lead the PP breakout. I've seen him throw some physical hits and get into shoving matches but I'd rather not ask him to do things that are far outside his game like the above. That's why there are guys like Simmonds and Bogo that need to keep the shenanigans to a minimum.

I agree it would be nice for Matthews to do something like that if someone else takes a run at Marner with an illegal hit.

However in my previous reply I was referring to Matthews using his 6'3 size to hit other players with the puck and get it lose like he did against the Panthers, because him scoring a goal like that is the best possible outcome.
