And some people were worried about him lol.

I swear it happens every season at some point.
I wasn't worried about him and knew he would start scoring goals.

It was just weird when Matthews did not score in the first two games of the season, because the 4 previous years he scored on opening night and last year he had 5 goals after 3 games played.

Matthews never really looked bad to me. He's had some pretty good chances and is finding a lot of chemistry with Marner. The real question is how palatable it would be to see the duo split up and see their production likely drop in order to get other players going. It is a real risk.

With Matthews we know he starts off every season playing well and this was the first time he's done that with Marner.

Matthews actually looked his very best the first couple of games when he put nothing on the board just from a 200 foot point of view. The way he moved on the ice, he was definitely showing a new gear. He's been getting a heavy work load this year so I'm not surprised he's not dancing the way he was, but at least the goals are coming. One critique is he's not getting quite the same open looks as he was last year. I think the Calgary PP goal was the first serious clean look he got all season.

This team reminds me of early to mid 2010’s Washington Capitals. Marner is Backstrom and Matthews is close to Ovechkin, positionally reversed. They had a lot of tough years before they finally won like the leafs.

A lot of us tried making the comparison of Chicago but that’s just not them they are closer to Washington
I liken them to a Beta personality. One that requires to experience and overcome high stress. This is opposed to Alphas, who dominate through raw aggression and dont lack confidence. This isnt meant as a slight. Athletes like George St Pierre are definitely Beta who master their fear and multiple skills.

He might not be ghosting like last year but I think this approach will bring more game over game consistency to the team benefit even though he might cap the maximum number of points he might get in a single game. His defensive effort has been rock solid game in and game out.

What about his 1st of the season against Ottawa which was also on the power play? I thought it was a clean look on the shot he was able to get off and past Matt Murray.

That first goal against Vancouver was a real statement in the aftermath of that hyped up McDavid coast to coast goal against us. The second goal line chip seems to be something you can expect from him going forward, might be the third of the season where he's done that.

Well another game with 2 goals and no hatty. Sucks.

Anyway he was amazing. So dominant on puck. He's so much shifter which is helping huge with his anticipation.

He's very fast this year. Continues to look like he has the puck on an absolute string at all times. I've watched it for a few years now but it amazes me the way he's able to maintain possession with his body/stick and feet
