We know Matthews has one of the best shots in the NHL, however this goal he scored tonight is just as great considering the angle he shot the puck from.
Hopefully the next time Toronto goes to overtime Keefe will start Matthews and Marner, no matter who they happen to be playing. He was feeling it tonight. Too bad he didn’t get a chance during 3 on 3.
I wasn't worried about him and knew he would start scoring goals. And some people were worried about him lol.
I swear it happens every season at some point.
Matthews never really looked bad to me. He's had some pretty good chances and is finding a lot of chemistry with Marner. The real question is how palatable it would be to see the duo split up and see their production likely drop in order to get other players going. It is a real risk. And some people were worried about him lol.

With Matthews we know he starts off every season playing well and this was the first time he's done that with Marner.Matthews never really looked bad to me. This team reminds me of early to mid 2010’s Washington Capitals. Marner is Backstrom and Matthews is close to Ovechkin, positionally reversed. They had a lot of tough years before they finally won like the leafs.

I liken them to a Beta personality. One that requires to experience and overcome high stress. This is opposed to Alphas, who dominate through raw aggression and dont lack confidence. This isnt meant as a slight. Athletes like George St Pierre are definitely Beta who master their fear and multiple skills. This team reminds me of early to mid 2010’s Washington Capitals. A lot of us tried making the comparison of Chicago but that’s just not them they are closer to Washington
He might not be ghosting like last year but I think this approach will bring more game over game consistency to the team benefit even though he might cap the maximum number of points he might get in a single game. His defensive effort has been rock solid game in and game out.Matthews actually looked his very best the first couple of games when he put nothing on the board just from a 200 foot point of view. The way he moved on the ice, he was definitely showing a new gear. He's been getting a heavy work load this year so I'm not surprised he's not dancing the way he was, but at least the goals are coming. One critique is he's not getting quite the same open looks as he was last year. I think the Calgary PP goal was the first serious clean look he got all season.
What about his 1st of the season against Ottawa which was also on the power play? I thought it was a clean look on the shot he was able to get off and past Matt Murray.Matthews actually looked his very best the first couple of games when he put nothing on the board just from a 200 foot point of view. Him and Marner if they stick around probably end up 1 and 2.He's been a top 5 player this year imo. Good chance he ends up as the best in franchise history.
