Believe me I have heard that type of discussion before about Toronto born players coming back home to play against the Maple Leafs and wanting to have a good game.

I guess the only time when something like that was in Toronto's favor was when the Maple Leafs played the Coyotes in Arizona and the talk about Matthews wanting to have a great game playing in his home state.

100% agree. I have vivid memories of Lindros, Brad Park, Gretzky, Steve Schutt, Orr etc...killing us at home. But to be fair, they were killing it in every city.

Good God Romanuk....Cringes*

He’s gonna miss at least tonight’s game with upper body soreness. The only obvious upper body injuries I’ve noticed were those cross checks he took against Montreal, but that was over a week ago. Maybe they’re just getting aggravated in games and he needs a little rest?

The Canadiens were definitely taking body shots on Matthews like they were making an investment. Since then his scoring touch has been a little bit off so I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some deep bruising.

It’s this kind of aggravating stuff that makes you wish we had a guy to seriously put the boom on them next time we meet.

Hah, Matthews actually leads the team in hits this year. But we do have some decent toughness - Muzzin, Simmonds and Bogo can all throw some bone crunching hits, and Simmonds can fight. Wouldn’t mind seeing Simmonds fight Chiarot again, without holding back this time.

Strange considering he played probably the most physical game of his career against Edmonton, at least of those that I’ve seen.

I hope it’s nothing related with his back, which I know he’s had some history of discomfort with. Those types of things can linger and crop up anytime.

Yeah who knows, maybe there was something we didn’t see/noticed in the Edmonton game. Also hope it’s not his back. And agreed on the physicality, I’d actually say that throughout the season to date, this has been the most physical, fast, hard working hockey I’ve ever seen out of Matthews. He’s been an absolute beast. If he was doing that while playing through an injury since that first game, even more impressive.

We do but Simmonds has gone soft. He could've ended Chiarot in first game but he let him go to be a sportsman. He let him go, Chiarot then destroyed his stick on Matthews lower back. Just sayin.

Since then he's been underwhelming. Sure he can play a bit with the puck but he's kidding himself if he doesn't realise the real reason he's here. It's to bring energy every shift with a hard body check or a fight once a game.

I know he said this exact thing but he isn't doing it. Hopefully tonight he brings it.

Next time we play Weber and Chiarot and Edmundson we got do some damage back to those guys otherwise they will do same sh*t again ... sorry Matty but you know it has to be done ... still love your kid but he can't do that sh8t to our guy without paying for it

Even if the Leafs do that the next time they play the Canadiens and I agree it's something they should do, watch them get called for multiple cross checking penalties, which never happened when that was being done to Matthews.

I would like to reunite some players that worked so well in the past as:

Hyman Mathews Nylander - one of the top lines in the NHL a few seasons ago
Simmonds JT Marner - Marner set up JT very nicely JT's 1st season with us for 47 goals, Simmonds may add
Vesey Kerfoot Soup - apparently Vesey and Kerf played together in college mabe some spark there
Jumbo Spezza Barabanov - or Anderson, Boyd whomever can win that spot
I dunno mabe worth a try

Hopefully Matthews doesn't miss the Leafs game on Sunday against Calgary, however I think Keefe's first choice would have been to play Matthews with Marner and Hyman while Thornton is out of the lineup.

Although I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Matthews with Nylander and Hyman, since that would put Marner back with Tavares.

Do you happen to know what happened to Matty?

Tavares didn’t see a sniff of McDavid last game. Keefe is flying Tavares under the radar finding mismatches. I would prefer Simmonds with Tavares tonight for a look.

Auston Matthews Criticizes Sheldon Keefe’s Coaching - NHL Rumors - NHLTradeRumors.Me

i thought it was interesting how the toronto media of all places downplayed what Matthews said about the game prep lol they made it seem insightful instead of critical. interesting how protected he's become, if engvall said that they would have made it about the coach. i hope Matthews lives up to that privilege of being untouchable.

This league is a joke. It has never protected It's stars . The officiating is biased and the flagrant penalties are not adjudicated properly. In what world can an opposing player take several cross checks with all their might against a player that has position and legal stake to that position? Then give penalties for tapping a players stick out of his hands or tapping his hands. The former is a penalty all day long (cross checking, interference) whatever. AM didn't have the puck therefore should not have been violated.
Where were our heavy weights to lay out retribution. If it happened to Gretz there would have been a brawl. Same old same old here. Ugh
