Call the league they missed anther one :) they miss lots of stuff that starts with “p” at the league, things like
Penalties

Player safety

Etc :)

Some they have in spades like pathetic pieces of particular matter lol

I think he's the greatest Leaf of this current generation. Since the franchise is 104 years old it's harder for me to say he's the greatest Leaf of all time.

When I was a kid my favorite all time Leaf was Doug Gilmour.

This kid is on another level.

Remember, even those dominant '60s and '40s leafs never had a true dominant superstar like this.

I completely agree Matthews is on another level.

It's also harder and maybe not fair to compare the Leafs of today to the teams of the 60's and other years.

Loved Doug, but it's not too early to say that Matthews is a far better player than Gilmour was. I do agree with it being difficult to pick the best player though. There's been so many great players over the years, how do you pick just one, especially when comparing different eras?

He's definitely on his way to being one of, if not the best ever though. His goal scoring ability is second to none and he's become a very good playmaker and defender.

I think it's fair to say Matthews is in the top 5 or even top 3 of all time Leafs players when it comes to his goal scoring.

Absolutely. When it comes to just goal scoring, he may already be sitting in the #1 spot. It's not like it's only been a year or two. He's been doing it since he entered the league. Plus no one can say he's not consistent. He's easily the most consistent goal scorer in the league. He only has 2 career hat tricks yet is scoring as good or better than all the other top goal scorers in the league. That's consistency!

There's a very real argument that he's already the best goal scorer in the Leafs history.

That is accurate. It has been along time since the NHL has had a young player come in and score Goals like Auston Matthews. The last player to do that was Ovechkin. The best part, he is a Leaf!

Sundin was probably the player I grew up watching when I first got into hockey. He was such a dominant player and I loved watching him, but Auston is just on another level which is crazy to say.

When Matthews got that penalty for Interference for knocking down Oilli Juolevi did anyone else think how does he get called for something like that, however the refs never call those multiple cross checks he got from Shea Weber on opening night.

Imagine being a coach and having this perfect dream combo fall in your lap and deciding to not ever bother using it.

I loved Sundin. One of the greatest Leafs ever. I just don't think he had anywhere near the natural talent of Matthews. Sundin gave it his all, but the natural talent just wasn't quite there. Hell of a player though!

Charlie Conacher won the League Goal Scoring title, or tied for the title, 5 times in 6 years. This was in the 1930's, so some time ago, but, Conacher had the most success compared to competition, of any Leafs goal scorers. He had a career best, 36 goals in 47 games.

Remember when Laine scored a hat trick in his first game against TO and everyone outside of leafs nation said he was better than Matthews... well it’s not aging well at all

Well he did the same in Detroit with Datsyuk and to a lesser extent Zetterberg. Wings fans would always talk about how Pavel Datsyuk could put up Early Crosby numbers if he didn’t have the leash on him. That said, they came pretty close to winning 2 Stanley Cups with Babcock at the helm and the 2014 Canadian Olympic tells you Babcock’s vision is to win a championship by a score of 1-0 with two 6’4” LHD and RHD defensemen bumping the puck back and forth for 58 minutes so that wouldn’t have worked with our guys.

Auston Matthews is definitely more next generation skill level than Mats Sundin. Sundin was very talented for his era but stylistically played the game in a more straightforward manner with more of an emphasis on using his size advantage to shield the puck, fight off defensemen, introduce the power game when traffic got heavy.
