Well he did the same in Detroit with Datsyuk and to a lesser extent Zetterberg. Wings fans would always talk about how Pavel Datsyuk could put up Early Crosby numbers if he didn’t have the leash on him. That said, they came pretty close to winning 2 Stanley Cups with Babcock at the helm and the 2014 Canadian Olympic tells you Babcock’s vision is to win a championship by a score of 1-0 with two 6’4” LHD and RHD defensemen bumping the puck back and forth for 58 minutes so that wouldn’t have worked with our guys.

And here's what he did to win his cup:

Datsyuk 21:40
Zetterberg 22:36

Matthews

Under Babs (235gms): 18:15toi, 44gl / 81pt pace
Under Keefe (59gms): 21:37toi, 61gl / 95pt pace

Marner

Under Babs (259gms): 17:50toi, 23gl / 77pt pace
Under Keefe (54gms): 22:34toi, 27gl / 106pt pace

Imagine being a coach and having this perfect dream combo fall in your lap and deciding to not ever bother using it.

One would hope that Matthews and Marner are better than they were when they were 19, but it is a good point.

When you look at the crappy NHL starts for guys like Jack Hughes, Alexis Lafreniere, Kappo Kakko, the starts Matthews, Marner and Nylander had was pretty unique. Maybe the coach didn’t feel like they could be utilized more and have even more success?

I would also include this fact. In the 2016-17 Season when Matthews, Marner, and Nylander were rookies Toronto was just coming off finishing last place overall in the 2015-16 Season.

When the Devils got Hughes 1st overall in 2019 they finished 29th overall and the Rangers getting Kakko 2nd overall that same year, they finished 26th overall.

Last year when the Rangers got Lafreniere 1st overall they were 18th overall and made the play-in series in the Toronto bubble.

I am really starting to like Matthews reactions to other guys scoring.

He was thrilled when Thorton scored, first one to Simmonds on Sat night, and jumped up on the bench when Kerfoot scored.

He looks like a guy who wants to win, and wants to see his fellow Leafs have success.

Here is a great Matthews stat and it's about his goal scoring at 5v5 and we know that's one category where he's great at. Since his rookie season in 2016-17 he ranks 1st with 117 5v5 goals. After him here is the other players in the top 5.

2nd: Alex Ovechkin, 100 5v5 goals.

3rd: Connor McDavid, 99 5v5 goals.

4th: Patrick Kane, 90 5v5 goals.

5th: Nikita Kucherov, 88 5v5 goals.

NHL Stats

The funny thing about that is on the main board they see that as all Leafs fans thinking Matthews is now a better overall goal scorer, when we are just posting stats that back up how good a goal scorer he's become. Not once did we say Matthews ranks 1st and Ovechkin ranks 2nd.
Not taking anything away from Ovechkin but he is on the decline. Matthews is the top dog now.

Greatest Leaf of all time.
He might be but he has a bit yet to go.
Dougie G led a lunch pail group of guys pretty far through sheer will and leadership. His greatness was not only defined by his skill but how he looked like he would give his life for any team mate and them him. That team over performed because of him. That is what makes a player great. AM has time

EDIT: This is 5v5, and does not include OT, which is counted as ES.

Saw this on another forum. Small sample size and still early, but a good start.

It's hilarious because he's become so reserved when he scores himself. It's just like "oh, did I do that again? Add it to the pile."

He also doesn’t seem like a guy who is gunning for his own stats. Notice how he often seems to ease off on the hattrick goal when he’s at 2 goals and there’s a blowout in progress for the Leafs.

Just looked and Matthews is 6 goals removed from top 20 goal scorer in Leaf history. By season's end could be top 12. In another 2 years could be pushing into top 5 (by 25 years old).

If he stays and remains healthy, could hold the record by 28/29 years old.

I can think of quite a few times where a Matthew shot would be perfectly acceptable, but he'll get the puck over to Marner. He knows he'll get his own and wants to see other get theirs too. Gotta love that.

The bolded is just UNBELIEVABLE considering the Leafs franchise is over 100 years old. So did the Leafs just have average players in AM34's position over the century, or is AM34 just that good?!

Well he's that good but there also used to be a lot less games and it's only goals scored while with said team. 6 more goals would put him 31st on Hab history and sometime next season he'd be inside their top 20 as well.

The guy at 20 for Toronto had 175 goals in 177 GP.

Leafs have never had a true all time great in his prime.

Before now.
