Mahovlich 48 goals as rookie back in a 70 game schedule when 3-2 games were normal. Beat out Hull for rookie of the year.
I see your Big M and I raise you a Darryl Sittler.

In 1977-78 Leafs captain at age 25/26 year recorded 45 goals (6th) & 72 assists (3rd best) and 117 points (3rd) in the scoring race behind only Guy Lafleur 132 and Brian Trottier 123 points. That improved on his 1975-76 season of 41 goals and 100 points.

In terms of all time points by a Leaf in a season Sittler holds the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th best seasons.

1. Doug Gilmour • 1992-93 .. 127 pts
2. Darryl Sittler • 1977-78 .. 117 pts
3. Doug Gilmour • 1993-94 .. 111 pts
4. Darryl Sittler • 1975-76 .. 100 pts
5. Dave Andreychuk • 1993-94 .. 99 pts
6. Darryl Sittler • 1979-80 .. 97 pts
7. Wilf Paiement • 1980-81 .. 97 pts
8. Darryl Sittler • 1980-81 .. 96 pts

Going to be interesting to see if Matthews can end up in his Leafs career having that kind of yearly impact statistically. His goal scoring will certainly not let him down as he is already among the leagues best in that category.

Should have given #27 to Mathews. ;)

Those 4 goals on opening night sealed his fate to lead the Maple Leafs... he's totally lived up to the challenge.

I shudder to think what would have happened to us if we had drafted a guy like Alexis Lafreniere first overall. 1 point in 13 games.

Imagine getting first overall the next 4 drafts after 2016. We wouldn’t have been this good this fast. Out of the first overalls after, Dahlin is probably the next best if he reaches his potential but he’s not Matthews caliber.

No brainer McDavid is the best 1st overall pick in the last decade. You could argue Mackinnon vs Matthews after for 2nd best, but still crazy to reflect that we got the right 1st pick at the right time.

The Toronto media would be wondering why he only had 1 point in 13 games, all the Leafs haters on here would be calling him a draft bust, and I also bet he would get compared a lot more to Stutzle because he had a much better start with Ottawa.

But we picked the wrong guy, shoulda picked Laine, he's so much better...:sarcasm:

AM34 scored 40 goals in his rookie season. And had a 13 game and 7 game goal drought that year. And only 1 was on an empty net. Its truly remarkable what he has accomplished to date. I have never seen a greater player play for the Leafs in my 30 years on this planet

Last year when Matthews had a hat trick against New Jersey that was only his second career empty net goal he scored in his career, and the first one since his 40th goal in his rookie season.

exactly, and now that he is being trusted to play down a man he will only get more this year. Which all good goal scorers get now and again. If not for Conner McDavid, he would be the best player of his generation. He will always be the Mario to Gretzky when it comes to that comparison, but I am quite OK with that lol

He also missed like 15 or more wide open nets and hit the post or crossbar during these stretches. 40 goals was also good for tied for 2nd overall in goal scoring that season. He was truly dominant right out of the gate.

I'm not sure Lemieux and Gretzky is the right comparison. I think a more defense Ovechkin vs Crosby would be more accurate as McDavid is on another level offensively.
