Matthews played more games by the same age because Ovechkin missed his first season due to the NHL lockout. They both share the same birthday ironically.

Correct.
Ovechkin was an elite goalscorer in his twenties. What he is doing in his thirties is unmatched and unique.
Matthews is pretty close in his twenties. A very long way to go

People are coping hard, just appreciate his greatness. Guys a 2x rocket winner, Hart and Lindsay winner, don't get why dude is so mad Matthews scored 6 goals vs two teams that aren't even the ones he cheers for.

I mean, the fanbase that poster quoted is notorious for exactly this, but this tired line only ever gets trotted out for a specific team lol.

Either way, I don't see it as gatekeeping at all, it's counter-smack-talk. It's weird that some of you think that if you hurl insults, the recipient just has to lie down and take it, then you post stupid shit about "gatekeeping smack talk" when they respond with a chirp of their own. Feel free to dish it out, don't expect sympathy if you're going to whine when it's your turn to take it.

Sure if you want to point to a long term achievement of goal scoring then we would say that Ovie is best in the league today. But, if you judge it based on what to expect if we watch a game today then Matthews or McDavid are the best, and imo Matthews has the edge there because he is more goal oriented

Per season totals will always be in favour of Ovi because of Matthews injury history. There is no denying Ovis durability and longevity.

LOL. Ovechkin has played for nearly two decades and Matthews has completed seven seasons, two of which were COVID-shortened. Obviously Ovi will have more seasons on this list. You also conveniently made the "arbitrary" cut-off right before Matthews' 41, 40, and 40 goal seasons.

That’s fine, and I am on the Matthews train, the problem is just the missed games. It’s not really goals per game, it’s totals relative to age. Not only did Ovie just play more games, he’s managed to keep scoring late into his 30s. Auston would have to avoid any injuries starting now and play an extra couple of seasons and not really slow down at all. Ovie is already 38 is still scoring right around 50 a year.

I don't even care about all the crap that gets spewed.

Auston Matthews is a joy to behold, and he plays on my favorite team.

You gotta enjoy what you can. Because I'm not sure I'll ever see the Leafs lift the cup in my life, so might as well enjoy this Matthews dude. His 60 goal season was so fun to watch.

Can he score even more? Well, that's what makes it fun to watch.

Jokes aside, double hat trick to start the year is no joke. Doesn’t matter if it’s October or whatever. This guy’s primed for a huge year.
