Auston Matthews back to back hat tricks

What are you talking about? What makes Matthews a ‘hate him’ player other than he plays on the leafs?

Usually people say that about players like Marchand
Can't even take a positive comment without turning it into a "whoa is me" static Leafs post.

I love Matthews as a player, I hate him because of the fanbase.

So what should we do?

Say nothing when he does well or say nothing when he doesn’t play well

Being consistent would he saying good things when he plays well and bad things when he doesn’t. Now if that lines up with the playoffs is a different story, as many leafs fans were trashing him last year too

But when a player comes out and does something that hasn’t been done in 5 years… yea he should get praised
I am not talking about the praise, nobody doubts that Matthews is a great player (how good is debatable and will always be). But about the fact that two games ago a vast part of the Leafs community had been shitting on Matthews themselves, some requesting to trade him away, especially if he asks for too much money, whereas they now join this thread to go after fans of different teams who criticized Matthews as well (and often in a less hateful way than Leafs fans). It's just funny.

Oh okay so 0, that's all I wanted to know thanks. Kind of surprised in all honesty, such a talented goal scorer, I wonder why he can't score a hat trick in the playoffs or score more to help his team win more rounds and cups like Ovechkin and Stamkos did. I don't really watch him all that much, so I wouldn't be able to answer why he can't score a hat trick in the playoffs.

It's not really surprising, Matthews doesn't score many hattricks even in the regular season usually.

There's 82 games in the regular season every season. Matthews has played 481 NHL games prior to this season and had 7 career hat tricks prior to this season (as we can't use this years playoff stats).

So Matthews gets a hat-trick roughly once every 68 regular season games prior to this season. Matthews has only played 50 games in the playoffs in his career.

Add in the fact only the top half of the league make the playoffs (can't light up Ottawa for 4) and the Leafs have never won the Atlantic (can't light up the wild card team).

Listen.....

It's only 800 more power play minutes that Ovechkin has had more than Matthews since the start of the 2016/17 season thus far.

And, as some people have actually argued, in good faith allegedly, more power play time does not correlate with more offensive production.
In fact, I had someone try to explain to me how more power play time is detrimental to offensive superstar players.

So....I guess we have to ignore that after all.
It’s 1155:35 to 300 goals. Or the equivalent of roughly 57 GP, all on the PP.

Based on the responses in this thread it looks like I missed some genius threads/posts regarding Stutzle/Cap vs Matthews. Matthews is probably the second best player in the league and the Leafs best player. Stutzle isn't even in the same bracket as the 2nd/3rd best players on the Leafs (Marner & Nylander). Don't ever change HFBoards.
Never change hfboards

That's true, but a guy like David Pastrnak, who is considered a inferior goal scorer to Matthews by many in this thread, scored a hat trick against Matthews in the playoffs in his 2nd time playing against him. I'm just surprised a weaker goal scorer like Pastrnak is able to score a hat trick in the playoffs (against Matthews nonetheless!) but the more talented goal scorer Matthews hasn't been able to do that. Your explanation kind of makes a little sense, but other guys have done it, and Toronto wasn't even a Wild Card team that year!

The opposing goalies are much better than the Leafs.

The Leafs went up against Vasi/Price/Rask/Bobrovsky/Holtby (all Vezina winners)

The opposing team went up against Jack Campbell/Reimer/Andersen/Samsonov (not a single Vezina between them)

Matthews is currently 3rd all-time in NHL history for G/GP for players with 400+ games.

He's definitively this generations greatest goal scorer, but to approach Ovechkin's numbers he will need to stay healthy and consistent well into his 30's which I believe will be one of Ovechkin's greatest legacies. If Auston does stay healthy you can easily see him ending his career top 10 all-time in goals scored.

Last season he was clearly playing hurt, and still managed to notch forty goals. His release just looked off and he'd whiff on so many opportunities that the player of the season before would bury.

It's still early, but that doesn't appear to be bothering him anymore to start the season. Goal scoring machine.

That's a pretty good point, all of those guys are fantastic goalies. Still, I feel like a guy as talented as Auston Matthews would have scored a hat trick in the playoffs. It does feel odd that he hasn't right? Ottawa had this player named JG Pageau, fan favorite who plays for the Islanders now, and he scored 3 goals when he was a rookie against Price once, and he also scored 4 goals against Lundqvist as well (who not only is also a Vezina winner, but a 1st ballot Hall of Famer!). So I can kind of understand that Matthews has faced some really tough goalies in the playoffs, but it still just doesn't feel right that he's been able to score a hat trick in the playoffs, when a guy like Pageau, who was (and still is!) a great little player, has despite not really being half the goal scorer Auston Matthews is!

I think the next step for Auston is to do it in the playoffs for him to really show the NHL what he can do.

He was actually playing hurt for a dozen or so games in his 60 goal season, same with his 41 goals in 52 games season. People don’t realize that a healthy Matthews is essentially a goal per game player.

I don't get why you're comparing Matthews playoff stats to other players regular season stats.

Matthews playoff performances have been going up every season. Matthews gets hate because he made the playoffs since his first season and struggled in his early seasons whereas other players get credit for missing the playoffs when they're young (Stutzle).

The cope is already starting on the mains... matthews is going to dig his way up to a tier above McDavid(they're on the same tier now) into the vast multiverse of evil Auston Matthews meta and all of hf who never believed will be retroactively punished for not bringing this Matthews meta tier into existence...
