You raise an interesting question. The answer is: I don't know. One thing is for sure, 1 playoff win in 7 years with that kind of talent and salaries is atrocious. Also, this core just doesn't seem to hate to lose. So I honestly wonder if they are just wired with the mindset that they are being paid millions to play a kids game and they don't truly care if they win a Cup or just live a fun, celebrity life.
I think they’d like to win, but is the commitment worth it and even possible.

Sign him to a reasonable deal or trade him, I'm tired of this greedy piggy

Posted this in another thread, thought it was this one....oh well lol

I'm now convinced Shanahan was behind the contracts for Matthews and Marner.

Dubas never said the core 4 were untouchable. His main beef was he wanted more power, and not having to continue run everything through Shanahan. If he thought it was necessary to trade Matthews, Marner or Nylander he wanted to be able to do that with no interference from anyone.

It was that refusal, not just money IMO that got him turfed.

Why do I think that?

Shanahan reportedly contacted Matthews, Marner and Nylander and told them they would not be traded. Treliving has come out and said we need to do something with our defense.

I believe Dubas had every intention to try to get Matthews to at least agree to sign an extension on July 1, failing that he would have explored trading him.

So here we are. Same place as the Islanders were a few years.
I defended Tavares then and I will defend Matthews as well if he leaves.

We have him for one more year. We have an ability to get some kind of agreement from him on an extension for July 1. If we can't and he walks next year, it's all on Leafs management,

Ultimately, yes. But it's a massive indictment on the player and his character, to be completely honest.

Crosby, 8 years.
Malkin, 8 years.
Ovechkin, 8 years.
McDavid, 8 years.
Draisaitl, 8 years.
Kucherov, 8 years.
MacKinnon, 8 years.
Rantanen, 8 years.
Makar, 8 years.
Pasta, 8 years.
Tkachuk, 8 years.
Stutzle, 8 years.
Caufield, 8 years.

All of these other superstars jumped at the chance to commit to their teams and all of them are making less than what the Leafs will offer Matthews in a fair deal. It's absolutely unfathomable that we're the only team who's top players aren't willing to commit long-term and for sustainable cap hits.

So, yes, this falls on management, but if Matthews says, "I want $14 million x 5 years, no wiggle room" how is that all on management? If you give Matthews that kind of scratch, you immediately have to trade players and weaken the team around him. We can't win more than 1 round with all these players and we'll do even worse with less depth and quality pieces.

In that case, all the Leafs and Matthews are doing are signing up for 5 more years of disappointment until Matthews ultimately leaves or gets booed out of town for being selfish.

McIndoe on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ cap situation: If the deals want to be maximized, it will come down to the players’ leverage - TSN.ca

Senior NHL Writer for The Athletic, Sean McIndoe joins Game Play to discuss the launch of Brad Treliving’s tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ entering a dubious cap situation and the leverage of the players involved in large financial deals, which players should receive a deal and the formation of the lineup going into next season.

Dubas literally gave Willy a verbal no-trade clause as long as he was GM. After the dude held out on him. LOL. He emptied teh cupboards going all in on that core. I find it hard to believe he wanted to bust it up.

I agree with everything you said.

I remember posting on here after they drafted Auston that he was gone as soon as he could be. And then when he signed for only 5 years with the last year a complete NMC just reinforced my feelings. His agent probably told him give them the 5th year but we'll demand a NMC.

It's a sad state for Canadian teams. Not only do many Canadian born players have Canadian teams on their no trade lists Americans on Canadian teams are leaving as soon as they can. Trouba, Fox, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and looks like DeBrincat. Sure there's many that are happy to play up here but you don't see Canadian players (other than JT) wanting to come home, unless they're in the final years of their careers.

If I'm Leafs I put an offer in front of Matthews of 12 million a year for 8 years. Maximum signing bonus and front loading allowed and a full NMC for 6 of the 8 years. The last 2 years he provides a list of 20 teams he will not accept a trade to.
That offer is good until (and we've dropped the ball here-should have done it a week ago) June 24. If he says no or refuses it, trade him for whatever you can get.

Fully aware of that. I do think, though that he would, at least lookinto moving one of them.

By the way I am far from a Dubas supporter. Didn't want him in the beginning.

I think we all know it's gonna be a stupid ask. We should do a poll with 10 or so options.

My money is on 5x14
But if that happens then everyone knows EXACTLY what type of person he is:

a me-first, money-first type of guy. Who cares if it weakens the rest of the team, I want my money and I want to be paid more than anyone else

So then, how exactly does ANY team in the league want a person like that playing for them?

Yes, I mentioned that a week or so ago.

Ridiculous statement made by a stupid man. And just because he said that, probably pissed off their agents.

and then he said

"When I get together with some of my old mates from the Cup years in Detroit ... we talk about winning together and growing together, and that's what we remember," Shanahan said. "We all found a way to fit with each other so that we could keep adding to the group"

Forgot to mention they weren't under a cap system then. lol

He also just went shopping on the open market and gave John Tavares (with a career high 86 points and nothing to his name) the 2nd largest cap hit in the NHL at the time behind McDavid. Then he told the kids to take less. Huge mistake.

But this time the shoe is on the other foot. The players were handed the keys to the castle and given everything they asked for and then some. Now it's time for them to do their parts. They haven't in the playoffs so far, but they can all man up now and take less to keep the core together with some scratch left over to upgrade.

FYI, maker’s contract was 6 yrs.

I don't disagree with this but then we go down the list, if you think Matthews on Vegas works as a cup winner as a 1C...

Coach? Defense? Supporting cast? Wingers?

Keeping in mind that Eichel has actually crushed it in his first playoffs and makes 1.3 or so less than Matthews and will for an additional few years probably make 2-3M less once Matthews re-ups.

Does the 1.3 million matter when they’re a 9.5 mil Mark Stone over the cap?

It’s weird how he gave him a verbal NTC (despite never actually saying this) but didn’t give him an actual full NTC on his contract, you’d think if he promised to never ever trade him no matter what he wouldn’t have an issue giving him the full NMC like the other two.

Marner made an offer of 8.5x8 the year prior to signing and Dubas turned him down.
Matthews was reportedly willing to sign 8 years but Dubas negotiated the lesser term.

Seems like both could have been on that list had Dubas chosen it.

Hayes is 1 million % correct.

$13.5 mill x 8 years - the starting point for negotiations. It's going to be a sh*t show 4 weeks from now.

Not to mention I agree with almost everything, but the time for 8 year deal was the last time around.

I don't mind $13.5 x 5 years, his wrist could be fubar in 3 years with our luck.

Marner, maybe.

Matthews? With the money, term and conditions he got? Translate it to an 8-year deal.

It would only be possible at league max.

If that’s the case it is mind boggling he is not only still employed in the NHL but got promoted!

Even 13.5 is too much.
Matthews currently makes 11.640.
MacKinnon will make 12.6 next year.
12.640 is a million dollar raise and the next, newest highest paid player in the NHL.
That is more than fair. On every level.
