I want to

I want to be on Long Island is not the same as I want to be a Maple Leaf. You can be a Canuck and still live in Long Island.

I want to stay on Long Island is not the same as I want to be an Islander. You can be a Canuck and still be on Long Island in the off-season. Matthews says I want to be "Maple Leaf".

Language is important.
I suppose if English is your 3rd language and you never heard of the NHL you might see it that way.

Hayes and the OD boys agree that anything over 13 has to be on an 8 year deal. That’s an over payment for what he brings.

watch it again

He himself says it’s important to get it done this offseason.

It was on tsn.

You can see for yourself
When asked how important to getting it done before the season He says " I think its important and it will all kind of work itself out in due time , and ill just kind of go from there but like I said before I do enjoy playing here"

I dont see that statement as it will get done, more as yes I like it here but we will see.

We are soon going to find out how much he wants to be a leaf, cause I still think he takes full advantage of his situation.

Why? What makes him so special?

What do you mean what makes him special? This is true for players his age. The next 6 years are dramatically more likely to be productive than the next 3 that’d come after that. As for the 4-5 years end of things, he’s had some wrist injury issues, not having to commit now for 8 years could be quite beneficial if it deteriorates over time. I would expect Matthews to want 8 years more than us.

I have no issues signing him for 8, but if he wants more of a mid term, why not

Not at 13 Mill. If they do overpay him again he gets limited bonus and no NT clauses.

Oh FFS.....try to save an ounce of your credibility and just admit you you were mistaken.

2nd fact you mention - when did he actually say he wants to be a maple leaf?

He didnt say that as far as i recall..he used words like intention.. which facilitates a whole bunch of sub context and lumps the business side into it
Yup...it means absolutely nothing. I intended on doing the dishes the other night...ask my wife how she feels about my intentions.

Hard to trust what he says until it's actually signed and done...it's obvious that the most important factor in a new deal is the money, so why don't we hear Matthews say, "Yeah, if the money is right, it's almost a guarantee that I'll re-sign..."? Based on his last contract, I don't expect his greed to change. He's letting his agent and the media do all the dirty work with the figures and term.

FACT. Matthews says he wants to be a Maple Leaf.
FACT. Matthews said he wants to be a Maple without knowing Dubas was going to resign and no Shane Doan in Toronto.
FACT. Matthews has been a model citizen in Toronto.
FACT. Matthews does not deserve to be the highest paid player in the NHL.
FACT. Matthews has won only 1 playoff round in 7 years.
FACT. Matthews PPG in the playoffs is 0.88 (which equals a 72 point season over 82gp).
FACT. The Leafs cannot add proper death unless Matthews signs for a lot less.
FACT. We will soon know if Matthews cares at all about winning or just making money.

I would say the most important thing in a new deal is he going to get his act in gear and actually lift his team up in the playoffs

we already know matthews cares most about making money.

it is known.
And there's nothing wrong with that. But when every deal you sign in a hard cap league is to maximize every possible penny made, and strictly on your terms, it becomes detrimental to team success and prohibits any chance of building a winner. The kid is 25 and made over $60 mil to date. And he could easily sign a new 8-year deal for $100 million with an annual cap hit of $12.6 mil so we can keep our other good players and add better depth as the cap eventually goes up. But will he?

I mean, after you make $160 million, when is enough enough? When you make that kind of money and don't prioritize winning, it's a massive red flag in terms of character imho.

Does he know how to win? This year was the worst playoff performance this group has had, including the year they missed.

You raise an interesting question. The answer is: I don't know. One thing is for sure, 1 playoff win in 7 years with that kind of talent and salaries is atrocious. Also, this core just doesn't seem to hate to lose. So I honestly wonder if they are just wired with the mindset that they are being paid millions to play a kids game and they don't truly care if they win a Cup or just live a fun, celebrity life.
