8 years should not be a sticking point for anyone. And people need to understand shortening the term is not going to lessen the AAV as the years you’re chopping off are early 30s years vs the first 4-5 which are late 20s and more valuable.

Anything up to around 13M at 5 years is fine to me. If we start talking about high 13s or 14, which I don’t think will happen, then that’s too much.

But I’d definitely prefer it to start with a 12

Hopefully Treliving can make the case for giving him big money up front is a hhhuuuugggeee advantage. The fact Dubas did that and still didn’t receive any concessions was a travesty. Let’s say he he signed for 12.5 x5, with 50 mil up front. If he invests that money conservatively , he can generate 5 percent just on dividends. So that 2.5 mil a year (never mind the compound interest), meaning an extra 12.5 by the time the deal ends. Essentially 15 mil a year. Most other teams can’t do this, the Leafs can, and it’s about f***ing time these players start to accommodate on the AAV because we give it all up front. It’s not hardball, it’s math. So tired of the entitled atmosphere here, you play for the CADILLAC of the league, you have everything.

Even 13.5 is too much.
Matthews currently makes 11.640.
MacKinnon will make 12.6 next year.
12.640 is a million dollar raise and the next, newest highest paid player in the NHL.
That is more than fair. On every level.

Yes to this.

12.640 x 5 years. No benefit in 8-year deal now.

The idea of an 8-year deal is to save money down the road. That's not happening in this case.

You are risking a hell of a cap hit on an injury-prone player. But let's put that aside for a moment.

Even if he doesn't drop off drastically in his 30s or maintain the high-level play, no way we'll need to break the bank for year 6-7-8 if we sign him for 5 years now...

At best, we are saving 500k and at worst we'll be stuck with 14 mill wristless Mathews for 8 years. Leafs are not benefiting from an 8-year deal.

Does the 1.3 million matter when they’re a 9.5 mil Mark Stone over the cap?

It’s weird how he gave him a verbal NTC (despite never actually saying this) but didn’t give him an actual full NTC on his contract, you’d think if he promised to never ever trade him no matter what he wouldn’t have an issue giving him the full NMC like the other two.

Are you referring to Lehner and Patrick that have been on LTIR all year?

I agree with many, Matthews shows willingness to play ball or you trade him. It's not about how hard it is to get players like him it's about pride and standards in your org. People will know the next star we get, the speculation will be 4-5 year deals at big money and the player will expect it.

Put the foot down now and say you take something we can win with or we don't want you. To all of them. And if none want it, then we rebuild. I would much rather do that than go through 5 years with Matthews at 15, Marner 14, Nylander maybe at 10 or 11.

They haven't won shit to be paid like that. And they aren't #1 in the league either at their positions they are top 5 mostly so why the massive overpays?

The GM can compare his stats to Sid and show him that Crosby between ages 28-35 put up the same points as AM in the same amount of games. Matthews owes the Leafs money. Forget outperforming his contract, he didn’t meet the contract.
Sure give max bonus but if the AAV is 12.75+ it has to be for 8 yrs.

He’s not the best player in the NHL and will probably get knocked down a spot by Bedard in two or three yrs.

Every player that comes in here from other organizations are literally bedazzled by how the players are treated here, the perks have no peer. It’s a great reminder that the Leafs aren’t some back water franchise desperate to draw players, you get it all here, and if that doesn’t count for something, get lost. It’s a privilege to wear this jersey right, they all say it, walk the walk then 34. He holds all the cards, f*** that.

Exactly. They need to let the players know they‘re doing all these things to build a winner not to satisfy two or three players.
Vegas has all that and more and they have no problem shipping players out.

He holds all the cards if they let him

FACT. Matthews does not deserve to be the highest paid player in the NHL.
FACT. Matthews has won only 1 playoff round in 7 years.
FACT. Matthews PPG in the playoffs is 0.88 (which equals a 72 point season over 82gp).
FACT. The Leafs cannot add proper death unless Matthews signs for a lot less.
FACT. We will soon know if Matthews cares at all about winning or just making money.
FACT. your opinion is not one.

That cap hit should would be OK for a great player, McD, Crosby in his prime, but not guys like Matthews.

Matthews didn’t earn his current contract.

BS. During this last 4 years he literally won the Rocket twice and was runner up for a third. He won the Hart trophy and Pearson last season and was a finalist for both the previous year as well. He’s placed top 10-25 ish in Selke most years and he hit the century mark. He’s got more than enough individual success to prove his contract worth.

The playoff stuff is a different animal but not particularly relevant to his regular season salary.

Both Marner and Matthews grew into their contacts quickly after they signed them. If the cap was actually 10 million more right now as it should have been if not for Covid this wouldn’t be the same level of talking point people want to make it

You understand that Crosby has been grossly underpaid by AAV due to the type of deal he signed than isn’t even legal anymore, right?

Suggestion Matthews didn’t meet his contract is utterly ridiculous

It's also worth mentioning that the contract scenarios that have gotten folks the most riled up are (so far) pulled from people's imaginations....

All we know in terms of reporting from the media that Mattehws will likely not be seeking a 7 or 8 year term deal and that it will have the highest league aav.

The above two facts don't necessarily mean he's going to be getting 15 mil over 3 years as locked in......

It's also worth mentioning that the Players Association would have a collective meltdown if Matthews does not drive the value of the contract above the current highest value - MacKinnon at $12.6m.

A player with much more individual success than Mack who has performed to a much higher standard over the course of their careers.

As far as what we know:

Nothing.

We don't know anything at all.
We have had lots of speculation thrown, but considering the sources of said information, it's completely meaningless.
We know what Matthews has said, and that also has about as much weight as a mouse-fart.

If the cap had grown so much without the pandemic.. what numbers do we thjnk he and nylander would be looking at?

Even that was far from concrete info

The main reason I'd like to see as much term awarded as possible is because of teammates potentially using his contract as a comparable for their own. I don't expect the biggest negotiations to be any easier this time around and think that the numbers for Matthews will ultimately end up in the neighbourhood of where you've anticipated them to be.
