If Matty is serious abou $15m, he'll be traded in the next 10 days. Realistically he can demand up to $13.5m IMO. Said it before, if Nylander wants close to Marner money, you deal him. If he takes up to 8.8m, you think about trading Marner.

Would you prefer Matthews and Marner at 13.5 mil and trade willi or
Matthews at 13.5 mil and Willy at 10 and trade marner

A new GM after another disappointing season, and then that new GM convincing Matty the teams franchise player to sign on long-term to a 7-8 year deal instead of 3-4 years = 2 X bones for the Fans.

Summer is getting off to a smashing success. That is already 2/3rds of a Gordie Howe hattrick in management terms. :wg:

I truly hope you are right, but they can announce an agreement in principle has been reached before July 1. If it is not done by tomorrow, time to seriously move on. If you are prepared to pay 13.5 or 14.0 on June 30 do it today. If he turns it down on June 22, you learned he is not going to stay and the risk for Leafs being turned down by AM and losing him for nothing goes to 95%..
Either fish or cut bait. Deadline bargaining over 13m and 13.5m is stupid for this team, and more importantly the fans.

Willie is not a $10M player under any circumstances. If he wants anywhere close to that he needs to go, irrespective of what happens with the other two. There are a ton of teams with no players making close to $10M. Those teams can afford to pay Willie whatever he wants, and good for them.

AM at $13.5 is fine unless its 3-4 years with a NM in the final year. The problem is always Mitch because if I knew he was looking for Matthews money again I would deal him as well. How do you nail that down now though? I guess if Ferris has the stones to tell Tree today that he won't use the Pasta deal as a comp then Mitch is out the door too. Giant AAVs haven't generated post season success and this band has not proven they deserve to be kept together.

Overpaying a million here and a million there is how you end up fulling out a bottom 6 with $1M salaries or trading assets for retention on acquisitions. The player agents have been running the Leaf's show for 4 years now. Time for a reality check.

But He can agree. Maybe you think waiting until July is good thing....I think its stupid. Watch the free agents sign quick, like they never talked?
If the best player on your team, your star cannot stand next to the new GM on June 22 and say our talks are leading to a good agreement for signing in July then you MUST accept that he is leaving.
The Leafs treat their players like gold, time a few of them stepped up and treated this team the same.

Neelander matched Matthew's production last season. When Willie goes into negotiate. How can you tell him he's worth 5 or 6 mil less a season than matthews especially with Willie playing pretty decent playoff hockey.

I guess if you wanted to, you could leak that a deal has been reached like the Dahlin deal was, I believe.

I'm sure the Leafs have a very good idea where his head is at. Not everything needs to be a press conference.

It would be so Leafy to have 4 players with virtually zero playoff success making $10+m. You would seriously have to question the competence of the management team and the suits above them.

If Matty was getting traded it would leak no matter what .. no way those discussions stay quiet .. almost impossible .. i suspect he will resign by july 1st .. and it will be for too much AAV but everyone will be ok except team won't be able to compete for Cups .. it is pretty simple what to expect here .. and if Matty takes 12.5M for 5 years then great .. he finally will show some team sense

I would also take more offense and less defense when it comes to his responsibilities. If he went full Bobby Holik and we won a Stanley Cup, I would have been impressed. Full transformation. But he's not at the level of the highest paid player in the game if he's not putting up unique numbers like Draisaitl's 13 goals in 12 games.

it was actually more impressive...13 goals in 8 games.. he vanished for the remaining 4 and had 0 goals in that span

I am not inclined to agree. Treliving cannot afford the legacy of losing another star for zero. Shanny would be done. If AM cannot step up with a gesture, a smile, a thumbs up that an agreement is in place, I don't think he is the player to go forward with. This is about winning a cup, not satisfying egos. It is time these players treat this team like the Leafs treat them.
The only deadline here is for the Leafs. AM has no deadline, none, zero. He will get his mercenary dollars next July...and prove that he is a mercenary.
This no trade clause is HUGE.

A July 1 signing is a pretty great PR smoke screen for whatever unreasonable contract terms Matthews “may” get.

So I would advise getting it done and not dragging it out all summer for marginal advantages but take big reputational body blows from an unhappy and impatient fanbase.

An announcement on the 1st would be great.
Apparently the cottage we're going to has horrible service so I may not know until the 3rd.

This is my sentiment as well. If Matthews doesn't want to commit, there's only one option.
