Ppl wanting to trade Marner literally our best player are just crazy...... trade marner and you will never see Matthew's score over 40 in a season.
Matty can score 40 with me and you on his wings.

We cant trade Marner cause he is our best player, we cant trade Matthews cause he scored 60, we cant trade Nylander cause he got 40 and can skate so good.......so lets just overpay again and cross our fingers it will work out this time?
Said it before McDavid is not enough of a return for 16 or 34 for some Leafs fans. Absolutely embarrassing if they run it back another year.

X time a charm?

Don't underestimate just how good Matthews is when he chooses to be.
I was like the ron ellis of amateur hockey in my day...skate like the wind only to miss the net by 12 ft nine out of ten times. Im not sure even Matthews would make a difference.

What? So I have to pay a guy 12/13 million so the guy I have to pay 13/14 million can score over 40 goals?

How about I just keep the guy who scored 40 (Matthews), Nylander (40) and trade Marner for another guy (Kempe/5.5 mil) who can score 40 goals?

Like one poster said about Hyman, just get the puck to Matty and get out of the way. LOL.

Neelander matched Matthew's production last season. When Willie goes into negotiate. How can you tell him he's worth 5 or 6 mil less a season than matthews especially with Willie playing pretty decent playoff hockey.
He was 20th in league scoring this year and 33rd last season. What their banged up #1C one year removed from an MVP gets should have no bearing on Willie. It doesn't seem like Nylander is looking at an early extension though so we may not know his number any time soon. Really the only one we can expect a resolution on right away is AM and how hard he squeezes them will determine whats left for the others. Now if AM wants $6M more than Willie is worth you send him elsewhere.

16 players scored 40 or more last year without Marner. How is this even possible?

Exactly, we don’t need him to score 60.
Score 40-50, play a 200 game and round out the rest of the team with depth who can chip in goals and play gritty.
but he did score 60 while playing a 200 foot game and blocking shots, that's what makes him such a freak player

but what happens on his next contract when he's being paid 16 mil over years then we won't be able to build a team!

….and in the playoffs we averaged 2 goals a game. So, what good did those 60 goals do us?

Regular season and playoff experience are different.

Marner is the poster child for this.

1. McDavid would not take $16m if you can't build a team around him
2. McDavid just needs #1G and dman and he'll do the rest
3. Rather pay 153 point McDavid $16m than whatever the Leafs pay Matthews

I swear it’s like half the people would rather just pay Matthews/Marner/Nylander whatever instead of building a complete team top to bottom.
If someone needs to go to bring in more depth, more players that can come through and a harder playoff style, do it.

Instead of saying every year: Gio is old, Holl sucks, the depth was bad, the goaltending let us down, Kerfoot was horrible, etc. Why is that? Because we got nobody, that’s why. It’s all at the top.

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with our big guns during the Tampa series either. Matthews big comeback performance in Game 4 was sort of his signature moment. But he was quiet that series up until the second half of that game before he came to life. Scored in the next game and the series winner but it wasn't exactly like he was Draisaitl.

Not everyone can come up as big as Draisaitl did when it matters.

Awe, there it is, gritty, aka playing a team game, playing for your mates.
AM, does not play gritty, for his team or mates, but definitely will play hard ball for an extra 500,000, and perhaps leave the Leafs. Mercenaries seldom step up except for themselves. We can all say it is a business but do you think LVegas players showed that? Most of those guys earn far less than AM.

Well, let's compare them:

We can do 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 years then.

That's an impressive resume by Mackinnon, for the part of his career he didn't suck.
The 3 seasons he played before Matthews was drafted, Mack scored all of:

59 goals
94 assists
153 points

That's an average of 20 goals and 51 points per year.

That's the reason why you shouldn't include a player's rookie and subsequent seasons in comparing them to established players over the course of the same seasons.

So I think if anything I feel pretty good about the argument of Matthews not deserving much more than either of McDavid or MacKinnon, cap might be going up cool, welcome to 12.7 or 12.734M if you want to get cute.

1. McDavid would not take $16m if you can't build a team around him
2. McDavid just needs #1G and dman and he'll do the rest
3. Rather pay 153 point McDavid $16m than whatever the Leafs pay Matthews
lol he's got another 1C, he had a nominated rookie of the year goalie this year, had the most vaunted PP in a century, had a borderline 1D in Ekholm and still lost.....

Also I can guarantee you he is going to take 15-17 on the next contract because he feels Edmonton jobbed him on the last one by not building a winner around him.

I swear it’s like half the people would rather just pay Matthews/Marner/Nylander whatever instead of building a complete team top to bottom.

Some just believe it doesn't have to be one or the other.

We can all say it is a business but do you think LVegas players showed that? Most of those guys earn far less than AM.
If you swap out a Vegas player for Matthews do they still win the cup?

Look at Vegas, you had and Eichel at double digits (ok so Matthews), a fantastic salary like Marchessault (trade a winger for this), a solid 2-way, big body vet like Stone, Pietrangelo as the anchor and great rookie goalie (could this be Woll?)

Fill in with hungry, North/south, solid team guys.
