I think you're right (again). Which means Marner will want $12 ish. The numbers are really getting up there.

Let's split the difference and say Nylander is $9.25, Marner is an even $12M, Matthews comes in at $13.75 and Reilly is at $7.5M.

Is the team willing to pay for JT and, if so, how much?
I don't think Marner will get a raise. They always use comparables and we are continually seeing that he's already paid at the top of the wingers as is right now.

What do you think barbashev will get ufa and does he get the same if vegas lost 1st or 2nd round

Projections are in the 4's...
Whether he won a cup or not....

So McDavid has more hardware than Matthews...so you'd be wrong there

Since Matthews has entered the league he's posted 542 pts in 481 gp or 1.13 pt per game (rounded up)

In that time, MacKinnon has put up 606 pts in 491 gp or 1.23 pt per game (not rounded)

MacKinnon's teams also won more series and then an actual Stanley cup, MacKinnon is definitely a better player than Auston Matthews. He can elevate his game in the post season as he has 100 pts in 77GP versus Matthews mediocre 44 pts in 50GP

So...you wrong :)

If you compare my salary average from the time I was in high school to now, it'd be massively different to the average of the last 5 years....

Why would you compare a rookie season to a 4th year of another player who is apparently better?

Cherry picking stats maybe, to fit your narrative....

So MacKinnon signed his extension last summer at 12.6M and earned 6.3M this year, he's now earning 12.6M starting next year, I think there was even rumors that the cap was going to jump 3-4M this off-season versus the 1M (likely) that we're getting.

Matthews is going to sign this summer and then enjoy his really high salary still and then get a bump the following year. The question is, does he even deserve a bump and if so, how much? He's already earning a ton. Matthews was an 85 pt guy this year and hit 100 points once, so he's between the 70-75 pt guys and the 100 pt guys more than he's a proven 100 point guy.

This is the thing here:

These people are going back to the time the idiots across the league kept saying
"He's not even a 70 point / 80 point / 100 point / 50 goal player".

Everyone else is the very best version of their careers, while some are the worst of their years....

Disingenuous arguments are just pathetic.

I garauntee Marner will get a raise on his next deal. May not be huge, but he’ll get one

I think he will as well, but I think Marner is very much appropriately paid.

100 point Selke level wingers are incredibly rare, but they will always have less impact than D or C.

I'd offer him a long term 11.5 - 12 deal and hope he signs it.

Depending on this coming season of course.

If he finishes top 3 Selke and over 100 points...he would be giving a significant discount in signing that deal.

Regardless of what the cap expert Leaf fans think.

He does not deserve a raise. He deserves a pay cut of about 1m. He should feel fortunate if he gets a raise or the pay stays the same. Very fortunate.

So when do you want to do the stats from? The last 3 years? 4 years?

And then waited until late into his last year and signed by a huge margin, the richest contract in team history.
This says he earned it and could have asked for more than Panarin. You should be happy he got the Bruins to pay up.

It is strange to me that everyone was so excited about a GM change but now this entire board is just preemptively complaining about bad contracts that haven’t even been signed yet. Isn’t this why we got a new guy?

I’m choosing to be optimistic. Treliving is not signing Matthews to an absurd unprecedented contract.

He’s going to sign for 8x$12m and we’re all going to jump for joy as if it’s the biggest steal of the century for him to be the third highest paid player in the league.

I hope you're right but I know how greedy / competitive / self important he can be.

June 22, the day that Treliving must begin to look for a trade for AM.
If the contract is not 90% finalized at this point talking trade is imperative. We must be secure a contract verbally agreed before July 1 or AM must go.
Losing our best player next summer for nothing is not an option. Anyone who considers the risk of giving away one of the top 5 players in the NHL is crazy.
Treliving has been thru this, this is about team, not about playing chicken with AM's flippin agent.

So when do you want to do the stats from? The last 3 years? 4 years?

Well, let's compare them:

We can do 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 years then.

That's an impressive resume by Mackinnon, for the part of his career he didn't suck.
The 3 seasons he played before Matthews was drafted, Mack scored all of:

59 goals
94 assists
153 points

That's an average of 20 goals and 51 points per year.

That's the reason why you shouldn't include a player's rookie and subsequent seasons in comparing them to established players over the course of the same seasons.

Unless it's a team he wants to go to and he's willing to come to an agreement-in-principle with said team, I don't see how a Matthews trade can work.

I'm not sure there are that many teams that can actually shed $13-$15 million in cap space to gobble up Matthews. We would only be shedding about $2 million or so to make the bottom end of that figure work. Most teams would be throwing out 2/3 of a first line forward, top pairing defenseman, number one goalie. Anything can happen, never say never. But the easy thing is Toronto paying Matthews and Matthews staying in Toronto.

You don't believe that putting up 10 and 11 points in 6 games, while being rather strong defensively is impressive?

Nearly every goal was scored while Holl was on the ice, and for the first 3 games, Nylander and Tavares.

Matthews was so dominant defensively that he wasn't on the ice for a shot on goal against in game 2...

In the first 4 or 5 games, he was on the ice for like 2 or 3 goals against, and 2 of them were scored immediately after he got on the ice and hadn't even gotten to skate to his own zone yet.

I'm telling you in plain language, I didn't find Matthews to be that impressive for the majority of the playoff run other than turning it on for a miracle Game 4 and then scoring one goal in Game 7. He can be better, and he'd better be better in the future.

I would also take more offense and less defense when it comes to his responsibilities. If he went full Bobby Holik and we won a Stanley Cup, I would have been impressed. Full transformation. But he's not at the level of the highest paid player in the game if he's not putting up unique numbers like Draisaitl's 13 goals in 12 games.

I completely agree with you there.

What I don't agree with, is the Draisaitl part.

Draisaitl was phenomenal offensively, but he was so bad defensively that it was all for naught.

People do know that even if there is a deal between Leafs and AM, they can’t announce it till July 1.

The fact that is I quiet pretty much shows AM and Willie are staying. Having said that most high profile trades are usually quiet till it announces.

The way I see it, you can play better team defense by committee and structure than for the team to score goals by committee due to its top heavy construction. So a Matthews scoring at a goal per game level in the playoffs at the cost of worse defensive coverage, less shot blocking would give me better value at $13 million than if we got deflated numbers and the team's offense no-shows yet again. If that makes sense.

Same second round results, but I prefer the trade offs Draisaitl gives to his team. And I hate Draisaitl and have always believed Matthews has a better skillset. It just needs to translate into real offense.
