I like Zub. I thought prior to last season the board wasn't throwing any love his way and he turned into a real find.

But you need to be careful about who you sign and for how long. We've got Zaitsev signed for 3 more years. We've got Chabot signed and Sanderson coming. We've got JBD and Thomson as righties that are knocking on the door and they'll either be ready within Zub's 2 year deal or deemed to be busts.

I obviously don't have any inside info but was Zub looking for 4 or 5 years? And what do you say to that if you're confident with your right side prospects?

We've got Zub signed for two years at very reasonable money. I'm good with that

Every prospect/young player we acquire I try to read/watch everything available on the net, so that gave me some good confidence in Zub. I was even saying that he could be top-4 in Ottawa as soon as next season (so 2020-21)

I looked at our salary cap structure going forward and seriously, as long as we are ready to spend to the cap, there shouldn't be any big problem. Deals like Zaitsev, Murray and White will expire in a few years when some younger guys will become more expensive. I'm thinking about The Magnificent Seven™ so of course problems will arise if guys like Sokolov, Formenton and Greig also become expensive

The team will have hard decisions to make on guys like Zub, Paul and Connor Brown... If Zub is going for a "retirement contract", we can't blame him as it will probably be his only one. We of course don't know how negotiations went but IIRC it was a pretty fast extension after the season... If we wanted to sign him long term and his camp didn't want... it would have taken more time, no? I think that's what Zub wanted (quickest way to UFA can be great for a NHL player) and for the team too.

I like JBD, Thomson is looking a bit more promising than we thought last year, Roger has time to develop, Guenette is another darkhorse but I'm personally not very confident with our right side. I think it's the glaring weakness in the organization. Having Zub for another 5-6 years instead of 2 would have been great. Let's hope that he'll agree to a 3-4 years extension after that one (if reasonable)

I watched all of the Zub video I could find too. And I looked at his international track record and listened to Button saying he could be an instant top 4. I'm pleased it worked out

But we've got another Russian Z signed to a long term deal and there's a lot of guys not happy with that deal.

I don't see the 2 year thing as a problem and he seems to like it here. If it still works in 2 years we sign him then. He likely won't have the offensive numbers for a big aav deal.

Still don't understand why we didn't sign him to 3 or 4 years....he's going to leave a big hole once he's a UFA

Years 1 and 2 are RFA years they are the simplest to get under contract . Don’t get me wrong I would have loved a 4 year deal but im sure Zub knows how much demand he will generate if he repeats last season two more times

2 years walked him to UFA. They signed him right after the exit meetings .. why the rush? The only explanation to me is that this was baked in from the beginning. Otherwise why not try to for more years... Dorion came out with 2 guys are going to be ready but .. really contender ready? That's just more of Dorion's sales pitch to the plebes and pumping the tires of the prospects imo.

Everyone in hockey can see what Zub can bring. I hope the Sens extend him early ; IE next summer / fall

Dorion's eval of D is questionable

Pretty much my thoughts. Dj even admitted they messed up in the evaluation of Zub last year and didn't know how good he really was. I don't think we have anyone contender ready in 2 years and Zub is a legit top 4 RD. Dorion should reach out to him this off season and try and extend if he has another great season.

Zub may be the best defenceman on the roster. Just never makes a wrong play, even when shit looks like it might go wrong he somehow makes it work.

It's close between him and Chabot imo. But all that means is we have two top pair D. When was the last time we could say that holy f***?

You could say Zub is our best player and you wouldn't be that far off. He's incredibly poised with the puck, not a single ounce of shakiness.

Re-signing Zub this summer should be our #1 priority. Chabot/Zub/Sanderson on our D-core will be unreal.
